Keep seeing Nigel Farage and milkshake on my TL from folks I follow in UK.
I'm from the US . Who is Nigel Farage? Why did he get milkshake thrown at him?

PoliceStateUK,
@PoliceStateUK@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Jaden3 Right-wing nationalist politician, ex-banker, general shithead.

He was an MEP (campaigning to get us out of the EU) and since achieving that he's rebranded his scam several times to screw things up for everyone again/more.

He has EU citizenship (through his wife) by the way, so when he's finished setting fire to this country again, he'll probably piss off somewhere nicer.

PoliceStateUK,
@PoliceStateUK@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Jaden3 Yes, they're good friends apparently.

PoliceStateUK,
@PoliceStateUK@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Jaden3 They have richer backers, kind of obviously, which means the others can either make up the gap with better policies for the masses, or they can try to out-fascist the other team. Depressingly, they seem to be going for option 2.

We basically have a choice between incompetent far-right wankers, or competent hard-right wankers, for the two main parties. It's not very inspiring.

We do have a slightly more realistic hope of some third and fourth party candidates getting into regional power

@Jaden3 Yep! In about 4 weeks.

Here is the (two dimensional) political placing of the parties in the forthcoming UK election from Political Compass....

If you thought you didn't have an awful lot of choice, the fact that all major parties are (on this assessment) siting in the blue (Right/Authoritarian) quadrant will confirm that suspicion

@Offbeatmammal Not Labour everywhere. In some seats we need Labour fans to vote Lib Dem, often uni towns iirc.

https://tactical.vote and a few similar sites have the best advice for each seat.

@mxtthxw I have the luxury of living in a safe seat, so I can vote how I want without any worries that it'll make the slightest difference to the result here 😄

PoliceStateUK,

@mxtthxw I've actually never voted for the winning candidate in a national election, and I've lived in a few different towns. Gotta love representative democracy!

Jeremy Corbyn will be trying to retain his seat without behind him. He's standing as part of 'The Collective' (which is probably not an intentional Star Trek reference, but who knows) along with candidates standing in 3 other seats.

"The end can’t come too soon. Not just for the Tory backbenchers, but for cabinet ministers too. They sit in the Commons with resigned expressions, checking their phones for potentially lucrative job offers. No one can remember the last time Penny Mordaunt was seen with a smile on her face. Jeremy Hunt had his head down, letting his tenants know he was doubling their rent. Every penny counts."
