📸 This week, preparing for — if you're there I'm going to be giving away 480 Picos... with a twist

@geerlingguy@mastodon.social avatar

Question for crafty folks: what's the best way I could cut down poster board (I'm using heavyweight Pen + Gear) into 480 little rectangles of 29mm x 70mm?

I could switch to some other stock paper too, but has to be thick/rigid and have one side semi-gloss for slippage

heh the Qualcomm/Arm Nuvia-related hatred goes deep, they apparently won't even allow @linustechtips to screenshot a page that says "arm" in the text or the phrase "Windows on Arm" without censoring "arm"

I'm a little sad this year that the ol' bird site is a diaspora—for local events like there used to be dozens of locals posting pictures, experiences, etc and even having mini conversations through Twitter.

Nowadays there are like 2 posts on Threads, 1 on Mastodon, 5 on Twitter/X, and a smattering across Instagram, Facebook, etc.

Just a little sad for that loss, one of the few things social media was actually good for :P

@LinuxAndYarn it doesn't make a lot of the essential modules I need work though; but that's a good way to run Ansible if you want to use an older machine to run plays.

Personal goals for this summer:

  • Migrate my blogs off of CentOS 7 and Rackspace
  • Learn UBlue tools

Younger me thought that moving from WordPress to some custom Django thing to power my blogs was a good idea but migrating off now is a huge pain. Planning on going full static/markdown with Hugo.

The bigger problem is actually migrating my postfix server for all my sites to a new IP without Google, etc, freaking out about it and causing potentially important emails to not go through.

@vwbusguy ugh, the pain of moving a sending server to a new IP. Especially nowadays, so many cloud service IPs are blacklisted, so getting email through to gmail is so hard

@thurrott seems like you could just hack your recall DB and get any screenshot you want!

No need for a separate screenshot tool anymore 🤓

@geerlingguy Since your (very help- and insightful) review of the original RPi PoE HAT+, it has been updated to "improve […] the overall power efficiency" and "power efficiency at low loads is also improved" according to this Product Change Notice: https://pip.raspberrypi.com/categories/851-pcn

Since rev 2 appears to address the power efficiency issue you found with rev 1: any chance you could review the new revision, too?

Thanks for your great work!

geerlingguy,
@geerlingguy@mastodon.social avatar

@felix_schwarz I briefly tested the newer version last year but never got around to documenting it... it's now in service on one of my Pi 4's downstairs. I didn't get to do a full rundown on all the issues to make sure they were solved but it did use a tad less power than my first model HATs (one of which I am using, the other is in a box now).

Raspberry Pi just launched their $70 AI Kit with the Hailo-8L NPU. I tested it and used it to build a custom 51 TOPS CoPilot+ PC—without Windows! Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgIMJbN0DS0

Regarding software/examples, Raspberry Pi's been adding Hailo support to picamera2 and rpicam-apps over the past week, and Hailo posted examples: https://github.com/hailo-ai/hailo-rpi5-examples

Check out some of the community's testing of the bigger brother, the Hailo-8, here: https://github.com/geerlingguy/raspberry-pi-pcie-devices/issues/164

@burtyb Haha I know... AI still makes my head spin, when I get into code besides 'just run a prebuilt model with a happy-path use case'

geerlingguy,
@geerlingguy@mastodon.social avatar

@blub Yes; models run a little smoother at least for real time processing at higher resolutions. Can also do multiple cameras—supposedly—though I was not able to get that working in my testing with 'alpha' level copies of rpicam-apps and picamera2. They've been pushing code up over the past week so I had to stop testing a couple days ago to work on the video, and that stuff might be easier now.

@godeater Quite interesting! Like, if you're self-supporting anyways, no use in paying for AAP. I think that's kind of the hurdle Red Hat has in AAP adoption. Most of the orgs that would benefit the most also have the engineering know-how to manage their own infra for it (and some have to, for compliance reasons).

geerlingguy,
@geerlingguy@mastodon.social avatar

@Sknashville It would be perfect for it! Honestly a lot of the Rockchip boards are better candidates, it just comes down to finding one with good enough support and such—a few of the boards have built in IR, and a few actually work okay, others are painful to use!

@jpmens Interestingly, I'm being accused of spreading FUD about Ansible now :P

I literally just want to know why they decided to write that blog post. It seems better to just not say anything, than to say nothing in 1600 words.

In the latter case, it caused me to waste time reading, and that makes me annoyed.
