Hobie has been missing all day. It's not like him to disappear, so I'm worried.

We don't have coyotes here, but he's kind of an idiot, so I really hope he's ok.

Rhetorical question: What about a bidet?

Seems like having one would be handy for other stuff, like washing feet. Having thought about it for a second, maybe that's it: feet/bum/fanny. Still, never need to worry about running out of TP.

If you can deal with the isolation, and 80% of your neighbors being MAGA, in-town lots in tiny, high-plains towns typically go for < $3k. Habitable houses can be had for well under $50k.

Every other farmstead has an acre or so of rusting old cars and farming equipment. Pretty much anything that's been hauled all the way out here, stays here forever because it's too expensive to move it anywhere else.

playing with a linux-based terminal replacement and it turns out it has telnet open, without any authentication. you just get root.

also it has an HTTP interface... which you can use to reflash the kernel

lolcat,
@lolcat@digipres.club avatar

@foone

Believe it or not, that's how a lot of the Internet operated until ~2000. Lots of X11 terminals with zero encryption of anything, aside from /etc/passwd, which was world readable. If you wanted a dump of accounts at a remote site, just telnet into their sendmail server and ask it. Etc, etc, etc.

Here's one: A technician rebooted a GPFS server attached to ~1PB of fast disk. It had a RedHat install disk in its CD drive, which someone had set to be first in the boot order. It proceeded to begin a RH install on the GPFS filesystem. The tech caught it in a few minutes, but a few million files were hosed.

At least I learned that one of our users was storing millions of 1kb files in an HPC filesystem with 4MB blocks...

Tribe misled millions about impeachment too - frequently conflating it with criminal prosecution, and turning many frustrated Democrats against their own party and representatives. He is an instrument of chaos.

@Teri_Kanefield @StephanieJones

It's not a particularly profound insight, but I have observed that most people, most of the time, are more interested in being validated than informed. Twitter and Tribe are good fits for scratching that itch. I don't know where you find the energy to engage in that world, but good on ya for fighting the good fight.

Just fire the clowns who handled digital forensics on "the laptop." Fire the clowns who promoted the IRS "whistleblowers." The are clearly deep pockets of either incompetence or corruption in the FBI (surprise! look hard at any large organization, and you'll find the same), but this is an opportunity to clean house.

Unlikely outcome, but would be delicious if it happened.

Tonight's performance at the theater didn't go completely according to plan, but the audience loved it.

I forgot to do a couple things during the first scene change, but the scene turned out fine because the actors are pros

In a later scene, the actors broke the coffee table, spilling its contents all over the floor, accidentally launched a pair of shoes into the audience, and nearly knocked a painting off the wall, leaving it hanging crookedly by just one screw

Combined with last night's pictures of Hobbie and Letty, it reminds me of Gus the cat, who lived a few doors down from me at the Church Street Theater in D.C. back in the 80s and 90s.

One of the dumbest things about being trans in Southern California is that people are always saying "dude" and then getting tripped up and apologizing. To me, personally.

And then I have to be like, "Dude, it's fine to say dude. I don't care. It's a normal part of speech. You can always say dude."

  1. the history of the current homeless/mental health/drug addiction situation in many US cities.

  2. the consequences of the worldwide population decline that's likely to begin this century, possibly in as little as 25 years.

"Jellyfish can't do much besides swim, sting, eat, and breed. They don't even have brains. Yet, these simple creatures can easily journey to the depths of the oceans in a way that humans, despite all our sophistication, cannot.

But what if humans could have jellyfish explore the oceans on our behalf, reporting back what they find? New research conducted at Caltech aims to make that a reality through the creation of what researchers call biohybrid robotic jellyfish."

It's my latest for work:

lolcat,
@lolcat@digipres.club avatar

@MLE_online

Very cool.

Are you familiar with the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI)? It operates instruments and data collection infrastructure at several locations worldwide for purposes similar to these Jellyfish cyborgs. But, it costs a fortune, and is tethered (literally) to specific locations. These jellybots feel like they could be a much more flexible, much less expensive alternative, assuming the data collection part (instruments and uplinks) can be worked out.

I will not miss Mitch as leader. For reasons why, read It's even Worse Than It Looks, and Google Ornstein and McConnell to see us interact. But keep in mind that we will now see Thune, Cornyn and Barrasso vie to replace him-- all by moving further right. Not good.

Yeah, it irritates the hell out of me to see the conventional wisdom pass for analysis in the news. Nearly every headline, in nearly every paper attributes the uncommitted vote to unhappiness about Biden's response to Israel in Gaza. Problem is, that's just a guess. Why not leave reporting on the causes for when you've actually done the analysis. Really irritating.

A couple of years back I was flying a tiny private plane over the desert from Utah to Las Vegas. My second was a typical, old, white, Nevada Republican (lots of these guys in aviation). When I asked him about the ongoing water shortages, he said "over them mountains there's more water than we could ever use - we just need to get some guns together and go and take it." He and the other old pilots I interacted with talked like this constantly.

lolcat,
@lolcat@digipres.club avatar

@GottaLaff

I run into this "Ima get my gun" solution disturbingly frequently among old white guys in the western US. In another case, an aircraft mechanic friend called the customer to say the work was done, but would cost ~5% more than estimated. The customer rounded up half a dozen friends with rifles to take the plane back by force (mechanic decamped and impounded the plane).

lolcat,
@lolcat@digipres.club avatar

@GottaLaff

When I moved to the very remote sticks a couple of years ago, the first person I met buttonholed me in the feed store to warn me about "that Biden" and "them microchip vaccines." The next one warned me about a caravan of "wetbacks" headed our way, telling me they would occupy a vacant house on my in-town lot. Another guy reassured me I'd be OK if I stuck with him "when the shooting starts."

The rural, western US is lit!
