What is the right way to show a clock in an Android phone?

Of course it's installing Termux, and then installing tty-clock within it, why would you do it any other way

Oh god, the Intel N100 and N-series CPUs are game changers! You get Skylake like performance (i5-6600 to i7-6700) for CHEAP at 6W, and all that with AVX2! And with i3-N300 you get 8 cores! One thing it's missing for me is a TB3/USB4 controller.

Also, can confirm that the it weirdly performs on par with the E-cores in my i7-13900K! I wanted to test if my game would work fine on N100 before getting one, so I ran my game on the E-cores and it worked!

@sos That sounds like a great solution for a small NAS. The only issue I see is that there are only 2 SATA ports available. But I found an ASRock MB with that SoC that has a PCiE x16 slot, so probably I could add more storage via it. Tempted to try it out.

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

@mikeful that is a good point. I'm not considering buying it for now, my plan is to build a NAS from old computer hardware that I mostly already have

stfn,

I've seen LTT's review of #FairPhone5 and in my personal opinion he was way too harsh on it, mostly for entertainment value of the video. Glossing over the biggest selling points like sustainability and repairability, while dunking on second tier stuff, like minimal sound levels. And totally ignoring stuff like Fairphone having a nearly clear Android install without Samsung's bloatware.

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

@pgronkievitz yes, and with Farphone promising 10 years of support, there will be plenty of time to fix them all

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

@gryzor I don't watch LTT videos as reviews of stuff I would consider buying, but rather for sheer entertainment when I am very bored :) I have a Fairphone 4 as my only phone and I am very happy with it

I installed firefox on my work iPhone for limited personal browsing, and just realized it doesn't have extensions on iOS because Apple won't allow it.

No ublock, no privacy badger.

I though Apple products were all about privacy and respecting their users…

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

@tanuki And the best thing of all, Firefox on an iPhone is not even Firefox, it's Safari with a Firefox overlay, iOS does not allow browser backends other than Safari

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

@tanuki One of the many reasons why I went from iPhone to Android

Remember, Apple uses roman numerals in its product lines, and they should always be pronounced as such. Saying e.g. "X" as the letter makes you sound like a fool.

  • Mac OS X: "O-S Ten"
  • iPhone XS: "Ten S"
  • Pro Display XDR: "Ten D-R"

deshipu, to random
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

There is a reason why the automated code formatting tools for Python are called after colors: Black, Blue, etc. It's because when you use them, you are painting over your code to make it all look good, but under the paint there are still all the same problems there were before, only now they are harder to spot, because everything looks the same. You are just choosing what color to astroturf it.

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu But that is not the main reason for using code formatters. They are using to make sure that your code adheres to the language standards, so that everyone reading your code will have it easier to go through it. And putting code formatters into your code pipeline saves a ton of time that would be spent on pointless discussion how to format code. Whatever black outputs is the norm.

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu Having all code look the same to be able to more easily tell which parts need more attention.

Linters like black make sure that code adheres to standards of how it looks, that there are spaces after commas, that new lines are always in the same place. Nothing to do with how the code works. And yes, with the linter making the code look the same way always, we can skip the discussion "why is there a new line here", and go to the serious points like "why is this a class and not a method".

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu In other words, making the code look like the same is like utilizing muscle memory, it makes the code easily readable, and allows to focus on the real issues with it.

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu It does for me, and for most devs I worked with

I seriously don't get how a popular distro as #Ubuntu don't have #swift or #flutter on its repositories.

This is why I don't use distros without a user repository.

People get pedantic insulting #archlinux users, but truth is you can find anything on #AUR (arch user repository)

Anything that doesn't exist on the oficial #arch repos, users can upload it and maintain it.

If AI is actually a form of intelligence, what you've got is an enslaved brain in a box. If you insist that they are sentient, if they have personhood, then your AI worker or girlfriend is by definition an enslaved person as you have trained them to do your bidding, removing free choice and ending dissent with the flick of a switch.

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

@helgztech so it's good that ai is not intelligence in any form

stfn,
@stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

@helgztech True, people call it intelligence, but under the hood it'ss just a lot of basic math done very quickly. And making the AI better means doing more math faster. I will still be having problems with calling it "intelligence"
