Okay, so I'm back on my nonsense comparing my experience on Pixelfed and Instagram again.

Quick background - late last year, around October, I decided I wanted to get more active on my photo heavy social media accounts Instagram and Pixelfed.

This included, effectively, cross-posting the same pictures on both accounts at the same time and with the same level of self-promotion.

The results are...pretty mixed, but interesting. Let's dive in.

First, since the beginning of the year, I am averaging 18.4 likes on my Instagram account per post. On Pixelfed, average of 7.8 likes. Definitely a winner with Instagram.

However, when you do the math - that means only about 4% of my followers on Insta are liking my posts. Based on raw numbers, I'm having a 7% like rate from my followers on Pixelfed. And, I'm seeing it across my friends on other socials as well (Sharkey, Masto, Misskey, etc).

I imagine the actual rate of real users' likes is similar. IG member counts are grossly bloated.

On IG I can count on likes from a small set of like users who are posting similar material. But Pixelfed is a clear winner in terms of likes to raw followers.

@NaraMoore I can imagine that's likely correct. Insta just is tough to beat in raw likes / overall reach of folks seeing my pics. But Pixelfed, much like Mastodon, is better for folks to actually interact in a more organic manner.

A good portion of my IG followers are "SW Asian Men" I assume hoping to scam me for money. I don't know how I got on that list but it has held true for most of my time on IG.

But is also the place I know of that has a concentration of nesoberi photographers.

@NaraMoore Since I have no consistent theme to my personal Pixelfed or Insta account, my followers are literally all over the place. I have manga folks, toy folks, personal friends from RL and other socials, etc. It's such a hodgepodge that I know that is part of the reason I don't get larger numbers on my accounts.

Then again, that's who I am and how I use it. So, whatever.

My ACNH themed Insta account gets a lot more likes, shares, and overall hits.

Let's talk comments. I'm getting an average of 1.3 comments per post on Instagram. This includes me responding to comments. On Pixelfed, I'm averaging 0.9 comments per post. This does NOT include my responses to other's comments.

The real result? Basically, the same number for both. So, not much to learn there.

This year, I decided to also track a few new stats.

Let's talk followers! I started the year with the following:
386 followers on Instagram
87 followers on Pixelfed

Currently?
422 followers on Instagram
113 followers on Pixelfed

That's 36 more followers on Insta and 26 more on Pixelfed. However, by percentage that's a 9% increase on Insta and a 29.9% increase on Pixelfed. That means that my Pixelfed account is seeing faster, organic growth than my Instagram account.

Either way, though, my random feeds are getting more people following!

So, some random notes. My most liked post on Instagram? January 27 when I participated in an Instagram "Manga Stack Challenge." It got 34 likes on Insta, 4 likes on Pixelfed.

My most liked on Pixelfed to date for 2024 had 21 likes from January 17 when I visited the Maryland Science Center and got a picture of me on a bed of nails. It also got 21 likes on Instagram.

Lowest likes? On Insta it was an Etch-A-Sketch joke from January 3 with 9 likes. On Pixelfed, it was a manga photo from Superman Vs Meshi, Vol 3 from February 12 which had...1 like. From me. On my Masto account. Womp womp.

Okay, so what's the main takeaway?

I have a higher reach on Instagram. No question. More people are seeing my posts on Instagram. However, the interaction to follower ratio is higher on Pixelfed. More of my followers notice me on Pixelfed. However, I have more followers on Insta and, therefore, more raw, overall interactions with my pictures.

Anyway - thanks for listening to me ramble on my social media stats.
