Another vote for Voyager, it’s so close to Apollo that Christian said it looked like he’d contributed to the design.

Photons are massless and along with other massless particles are known as Luxons because they always travel at the speed of light. But notice that the speed of light varies depending on the medium that light is crossing. (Eg 300,000 m/s in a vacuum . 200,000 m/s in glass)

So you could certainly transmit data faster than light through glass by simply transmitting it in a vacuum. But there’s little practical use except perhaps gravity wave detectors.

There are a class of particles that always travel slower than light (unless you accelerate them with infinite energy) and also a theoretical and controversial class of particles that travel at infinite speed and would require infinite energy to slow them to light speed. (If they did exist no means has ever been postulated to detect them)

It depends what country you are in. In the UK a retailer must accept electronic items for recycling (or provide you with the details of a free recycling service) The local council will have a recycling service (in most areas small appliances can be left out with your recycling bin). For items which might have a value there are companies that will buy them from you for a small amount and then recycle.

Please do not take them to a charity shop without checking beforehand as many cannot afford the testing needed before they can resell.

I’ve just had a really odd situation on iOS with the latest build. Go into a post and add a comment, come back out and the timeline jumps forward or occasionally back a few posts.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

By any chance is this a Samsung and you’ve just updated OneUI?

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

There have been reports of Samsungs on the newest OneUI giving that message with React apps and some notifications.

That is how I guessed you had a Samsung.

Sorry, I haven’t heard how this can be resolved l, it might need Samsung to do an update.

When the first betas of 0.19 went out about two months ago, I contacted the Devs(plural) on Matrix.

Let’s just say Liftoff! Does not work when you are logged in to an instance that upgrades to 0.19 and cannot log in on 0.19. There’s no sign of any commits since August.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Just to add that the following are compatible with 0.19

Voyager - the daddy of Lemmy clients Sync (as of today) Avelon Mlem (RC in beta has full support, production works )

I’m sure there are others

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Mlem is now in the App Store with full 0.19RC support. Looks fantastic.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

He’s moved on and anyway he says PixelPals now makes more money than Apollo did.

I think people are reading too much into a short comment from months ago.

Is Liftoff still in development?

Hey The Dev, this is just a one off, random non technical user’s ( I know what does and thats it) question thar are you still advancing (developing has such a Heavy Tone in it) your app? I mean, I LOVE it for the heavens, particularily on the user interface, but its kind of lagging behind of abilities of other Lemmy apps....

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

I asked the same to one of the devs two weeks ago but didn’t get a response.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Not to change the topic to Sync, but Lemmy itself is still at the rapid development stage. The API is not yet stable. So any app needs to also have rapid development or things will gradually stop working. For me thats especially the case when the app is paid for.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

There’s not just one Developer. If I remember correctly there’s at least two doing different things.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

I think the count is removed in Lemmy 0.19, so apps are dropping it as they update?

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

I’d like to see the long promised redo of Control Centre and Notification Centre.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

If you’re seeing their comments and posts (which are public) it sounds like you had an interaction with them and have accidentally tapped on their name viewing their profile.

If you go back (or click back) you’ll get back to your inbox.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Why would it have infinite digits? It is just as like to be 0.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Actually it’s not compatible with the new authentication method in Lemmy 0.19 so as soon as that rolls out to your instance you’ll not be able to log in and there will be missing posts and problems with the list of communities.

Some instances have already upgraded.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Over two months ago they updated us on their plans. Saying that things had stabilised and were getting back into things giving a roadmap link to a GitHub pist. But if you go to GitHub there’s been no commits since Aug 28 and the GitHub post linked to has no change since July.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

It’s not a single Dev though? Check GitHub.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Voyager is the king of Lemmy apps at the moment, is being actively developed. Mlem is also being developed.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

I understand that a few apps are waiting on 0.19 imminent release before updating. (Incidentally Voyager should work fine even with the latest RC but because of the way authentication works on 0.19 the native app is best rather than the PWA (a PWA can’t technically support both <0.19 and 0.19))

The other app issue is that several are essentially no longer being developed or at least very slowly developed eg Liftoff! Which hasn’t seen a commit in over three months

Adding in various instance issues with lone or missing admins and servers going offline, it’s a wonder Lemmy is still around.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

I agree completely, it seems that several are essentially abandoned, a couple seem to have been spur of the moment spare time projects that they no longer have much time for and one is being rewritten so they aren’t updating the existing app.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Memmy as the devs said they didn’t understand the programming environment when they made the original version.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Mlem have just released a beta to TestFlight that has 0.19 support.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

UK: anywhere that sells batteries has to have a disposal facility.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Just to add that 2FA does not work reliably on Lemmy instances running less than 0.19. (It’s possible to get locked out) It’s generally recommended not to use it unless your instance has upgraded.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

As I say I’m talking generally, not about your Voyager problem.

It’s not that you can’t log in at all, it’s unreliable. You can get into a state where authentication doesn’t work and there’s not much an admin can do. Check on the Lemmy dev community for some more detail.

0.19 is not far away and some instances are already running the release candidate.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

As well as the medical effects, there’s also the realisation (age varies when this happens) that going out in order to get drunk is not a good time.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

I know what you’re saying but the world has moved on. Companies and regulators are talking about fair value as governments adopt ESG laws.

Companies that take an old fashioned “as much as we can get away with” approach are finding their customers drifting away. Nowadays if companies want to put up prices and be successful then they have to make the product (whatever it is) seem more valuable.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

That’s an old fashioned view that business moved on from in the last ten years. It’s all about Environmental,Social and Corporate Governance (ESG investors are in control now at the big investors) with governments and regulators around the world setting rules. There’s a reason Apple is trumpeting its green credentials.

So if a company wants to attract money its needs a strong position. One aspect is the concept of fair value. It gets away from older concepts such as cheap and premium. A product should offer fair value. That means that what it offers is commensurate with the cost to the consumer. The consumer chooses whether the product or service offers fair value. Those companies that offer fair value will attract more investors and more customers.

That’s why I say they are lacking in modern business smarts.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

I didn’t say they don’t want to see companies charge too much. Fair Value is not about the price but the value you get for that price.

I’m talking this planet. Just look for ESG funds and ESG compliant companies. They are valued at over 53 trillion dollars according to the UN.

ESG reporting is now mandatory and a part of accounting standards in the US, UK and the majority of countries.

Incidentally, try investor.apple.com/esg/default.aspx

You’ll find Apples reports back to 2021.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

No, I was responding to your old fashioned views about pricing. Do you see the difference between fair pricing that you mention and fair value ?

The whole point with Fair Value is that the consumer has control. It’s not about fair pricing. It’s about what you get for that price being fair value.

Nowadays a company needs to define its target market and ensure that target market gets fair value. A product can have any price as long as its target market thinks it’s fair value.

We’ve seen some companies innovate and open up new markets that haven’t been served before. For example social tariffs that attract consumers who wouldn’t normally subscribe.

It’s not just me saying this. Many commentators and analysts have pointed out that some companies (not just Apple) are taking a rather basic approach and actually removing value. The whole idea with Apple one was to add value but now that seems to be changing. They are retreating to what they know, put up prices without using their business acumen to increase value.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Genuine question. Is it still in active development? The last release was three months ago, the last commit on GitHub was in August and no posts from the team in two months.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Yes, but there’s no way of manually clearing the cache. On iOS the app (if it’s in the App Store) must either manage the cache automatically or allow the user to set a cache size limit.

If it gets out of hand (see Settings/General/iPhone Storage) You’d need to uninstall the app, restart your phone and re-install.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

One of the potential issues (and it’s a Lemmy thing) is that instances can go off line or have software issues or get taken over by CSAM etc The advice is often that it’s easier to set up a new account. So at any one time there’s lots of new accounts that are actually people who’ve been around a long time.

Could we use AI to update 4:3 media to 16:9?

I’ve been re-watching star trek voyager recently, and I’ve heard when filming, they didn’t clear the wide angle of filming equipment, so it’s not as simple as just going back to the original film. With the advancement of AI, is it only a matter of time until older programs like this are released with more updated...

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Very true, I remember a few years ago someone converting old cartoons to a consistent 60 frames a second.

If they’d asked an animator they’d have found out that animation purposely uses different rates of change to give a different feel to scenes. So the improvement actually ruined what they were trying to improve.

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

I’m on discuss.online and can join, vote and comment. Which version of Voyager are you on? Is it possible you’re banned?

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

I’m using the native iOS Voyager app. Which version of Voyager are you using?

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Are you using the Android app or the PWA?

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

https://discuss.online/pictrs/image/51391e47-4bf9-4272-b67d-8dd4e14fa146.jpegI hadn’t noticed them before, but if you take a screenshot and zoom in a little you can see them. Once you’ve seen them you can’t avoid them. I’m not sure I would say they are jagged more like extra pixels. (iPhone 12)

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

Hey @zachatrocity hope you’re settling into family life?

Is there any Liftoff! news?

FelipeFelop,
@FelipeFelop@discuss.online avatar

I guess that’s a no then 🙁
