From time to time over the past 5 years I've noticed that every time I feel a bit more relaxed about something, I become more overtly ADHD.

I'm going to have feelings if at some point I discover this was all masking.

@munin @recursive NGL — I have historically needed to rely on the exponentially increasing anxiety that comes from a nearing deadline to help me hyper-focus so as to complete it…

    It's weird how we speak of technical expertise as a society like it's some amazing, distant thing, and not just a consequence of "this person spent a significant time being very interested in this thing"

    IPmonger,
    @IPmonger@hachyderm.io avatar

    @recursive and, as will most skills, hard work and mundane routine effort are an enormous factor. Talent, taste, etc are what distinguish the excellent from the mere expert.

    Fun fact apropos of nothing: when Hitler came into power democratically it took him like 3 months to dismantle democracy completely and there were no new elections for 17 years.

    He came into power after earlier starting an insurrection. State institutions and government failed to ban him from future elections.

    Periodic toot about my astonishment that a lot of “techies” don’t know that macOS is a true UNIX operating system going back in a direct line to the original UNIX (and BSD). ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    @thomasfuchs never underestimate how ignorant of history most Americans are. It’s so prevalent that it can come to impact immigrants as well…

    The gaslighting approach of essentially telling COVID-cautious people that they're figuratively dead to you unless they walk back some of their precautions is really ironic, considering you'll be literally dead to them in a few more years.

    IPmonger,
    @IPmonger@hachyderm.io avatar

    @PacificNic puts the COVID-cautious on the bleeding edge of the new social groupings, doesn’t it??

    @croissant @PacificNic sadly, I’m pessimistic that will occur anytime soon.

    @nedbat I heartily support the use of still. Nonetheless, I favor diversity in my language….

    Aattacking DEI has finally arrived in the broad right-wing mainstream, just like the bullshit attacks against CRT before it.

    All thanks to the relentless pushing from libertarian fartwaffles like DHH!

    Hey, Rails core team, how are you doing?

    IPmonger,
    @IPmonger@hachyderm.io avatar

    @thomasfuchs disturbing thought for me: Corpos realizing embracing DEI was a strategic error — rather than leveraging an onshore supply of lower wage workers, it brought in workers more open to (if not downright supportive of) unions..

    I was reminded today of the moment Dennis Ritchie fought the lawyers and won. They were reprinting the Unix ACM paper and the new trademark rules required that he change "PDP-11 Unix file system" into "PDP-11™ computer system UNIX™ system file system" in the reprint. He prevailed but only after agreeing to put Unix in italics, uppercase, and adorned with ™ at its first appearance. A win, though, really.

    IPmonger,
    @IPmonger@hachyderm.io avatar

    @robpike credit where credit is due, but littering speech with product placement acknowledgments is definitely a step in the wrong direction. Thanks to Dennis Ritchie!!!

    Oh no! Texas (Tejas) is majority Latiné?! What's next?

    The Arid Zone? (Arizona)
    The Angels? (Los Angeles)
    The Meadows? (Las Vegas)
    Colored Red? (Colorado)
    Mountain State? (Montana)

    This is terrible! Anya Taylor Joy is replacing us!

    Reminder, most Latiné people are white. Relax.

    🤔 These "Fear of Threads" convos say a little bit about how much Fediverse folk trust Threads and Meta, and a whole lot about how much Fediverse folk trust the granular Moderation and Trust & Safety tools available to them.

    Whether you preemptively defed, or federate happily, you are right. You've made the best decision for you, given the information available to you. 👍🏿

    But, you might have made/will make a different decision if you had more Fediverse appropriate Trust and Safety capabilities.

    IPmonger,
    @IPmonger@hachyderm.io avatar

    @mekkaokereke I’m still convinced personal instances are the optimal level of implementation. There should be multiple rings of federation that influence how info is shared within and between each ring. There should also be multiple rings per level, at the discret of the instance admin.

    okay i think i get tri-color incremental mark and sweep now. at least non-generational. the easy way is to do what they call snapshot-at-the-beginning which is not a snapshot at all, because fucking compsci academics man i fucking swear

    instead what it does is whenever you're gonna overwrite a reference to an object, mark that object black and push its references onto the to-be-marked stack (mark them grey)

    that way any object that was live at the start of the marking phase will always stay alive. which is fine since if it has become garbo then it'll be reclaimed in the next cycle

    IPmonger,
    @IPmonger@hachyderm.io avatar

    @eniko thanks for the explanation — is there a reference paper you used?

    TFW you reach a certain age and realize you have both the ability and responsibility to make your small part of the world a bit more the way you want it to be.

    Despite materially being quite middle class, my parents didn't really have a chance to look at life like this. The responsibility to others wasn't often acknowledged in my childhood.
