Greater Idaho movement: 13 counties in eastern Oregon have voted to secede and join Idaho (ktvz.com)

On Tuesday, voters in Crook County passed measure 7-86, which asked voters if they support negotiations to move the Oregon/Idaho border to include Crook County in Idaho. The measure is passing with 53% of the vote, and makes Crook County the 13th county in eastern Oregon to pass a Greater Idaho measure.

IamSparticles,

They’re not, though. Not without the permission of the Oregon state government, the Idaho state government, and the US congress. That’s the point. This is a tiny portion of the population of Oregon. They don’t get to just decide they live in Idaho now.

IamSparticles,

Yep. I visited London for the first time last summer. They have protected pedestrian crossings everywhere and it’s really nice. A very walkable city.

IamSparticles,

Karoline Leavitt, a Trump campaign spokesperson, said in a statement that the video was not created by the campaign and was “reposted by a staffer who clearly did not see the word, while the President was in court.”

Honestly, Just another example of how he constantly hires incompetent people.

I can’t upvote this enough. Political ideals should not stand between doctors and patients seeking necessary medical care. And FFS, if you’re going to force students to watch a video about fetal development in class, you should be required to ensure that the information in that video is as accurate as possible.

IamSparticles,

Yup. Judge literally said “your behavior is contemmptuous”. As in, “I could hold you in contempt.”

IamSparticles,

Why is there never a simple follow-up question: “Mr. Rubio, how will you personally determine the fairness of the election?”

IamSparticles,

Good summary. A lot of this was covered in the story but you have to read through a lot of fluff before you get to the bit about the actual mechanics of the situation. Another bit to mention, though, is that a lot of those 20% second mortgages had variable interest rates, and after the 2008 crash, the rates skyrocketed for a lot of folks. People were unable to make the suddenly much higher payments, which is why they sought consolidation/forgiveness in the first place.

But yeah. Always be aware of what you’re signing up for when you take out a loan, and get all the terms in writing. If someone tells you not to worry about making payments, make sure you get that in writing, too. I was lucky enough to learn this lesson a long time ago with a much less expensive asset. My wife and I bought an appliance on one of those no-money-down 0% interest financing deals. The fine print was that if you were late on a single payment by even a day, they immediately tacked on back interest for the full purchase price at ridiculously high rate. My wife thought she had mailed the final payment but it turned out she had miscalculated by one. We got a phone call the day after the last payment was due. On a balance of something like $50, we suddenly had a penalty of over $1000. I was pretty pissed but there wasn’t really anything we could do since we’d signed the deal.

IamSparticles,

Cities’ populations have declined as they’ve seen birth rates decrease and residents leave over high cost of living.

I suspect the cost of living is a larger factor than decreasing birth rate. Raising kids in the city is becoming less and less affordable. While city schools are underpopulated, schools in the suburbs and rural areas are terribly overcrowded.

IamSparticles,

Is anyone surprised? When Cohen testified the other day everyone else was reporting how he had recordings of Trump acknowledging the payment was a bribe to kill the story. Fox News and other far right outlets were reporting that Cohen had made secret recordings of his conversations with Trump. They barely mentioned the content of those conversations.

Texas governor pardons man who killed Black Lives Matter protester in 2020 (www.theguardian.com)

Governor Greg Abbott of Texas issued a full pardon on Thursday to a former US army sergeant convicted of murder for fatally shooting an armed demonstrator in 2020 during nationwide protests against police violence and racial injustice....

IamSparticles,

You have got to be fucking kidding me. This shit stain actively planned to go shoot someone, said he could get away with it by claiming self defense, then went and did it. There was no evidence produced beyond his own claim that he was threatened, and several eyewitness accounts contradicted that claim. It was a slam dunk case of murder. Good people of Texas, I’m sorry, but your collective heads are up your collective asses if you think that pardoning this monster is serving justice.

I’m not sure why you think that would be an issue. Mounting the exterior compressor close to the ground is common practice for ease of maintenance. Getting it wet isn’t really a problem. I’m not really sure why we’re having HVAC install discussions in a cat forum though :P

IamSparticles, (edited )

A lot of times they will mount them to the wall if the unit is small enough. It’s cheaper and the refrigerant line run is shorter. But for larger units it’s common practice to mount them on a concrete pad on the ground. In this case, someone probably just didn’t want to spring for the wall mounting hardware, so they put it on a couple cinder blocks. It’s not ideal, but it doesn’t really hurt anything.

IamSparticles,

My read was that she was trying to bypass the line of cars dropping off kids, and he was trying to stop her so she wouldn’t run over a kid exiting a vehicle. If you’ve ever dropped off kids at school in the morning, you know this is a major nono. The problem is that, if you rush someone yelling “STOP” in that situation, you run the risk of making them panic and do something even more unexpected (like accidentally turn into the bus lane). It would have been better to flag her down calmly, and explain the problem. But this guy was so obsessed with enforcing The Rules that he got aggressive and created a much worse situation for everyone involved.

IamSparticles,

Yeah, tipping is pretty messed up. In a lot of states, wait staff are exempt from the minimum wage because they’re expected to treat tips (which are notoriously unreliable) as part of their salary.

Study reveals "widespread, bipartisan aversion" to neighbors owning AR-15 rifles (www.psypost.org)

A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveals that across all political and social groups in the United States, there is a strong preference against living near AR-15 rifle owners and neighbors who store guns outside of locked safes. This surprising consensus suggests that when it comes...

IamSparticles,

What is literally written in the constitution isn’t always as important as how those words have been interpreted by congress and the courts.

IamSparticles,

I don’t think that’s entirely fair to the judge. There is no precedent for imprisoning a former president or someone who is currently running for president . There are real legal and logistical problems with doing so. Meanwhile $1k is literally the maximum amount the judge can legally fine him for each infraction. Judges get a lot of latitude in deciding how to deal with people who are violating a court order, but in this case he risks setting off a political shitstorm and I do not envy him.

I’m a little confused why this is in the news. First off, it’s just a House Resolution. It’s has no legally binding repercussions. It’s basically the House of Representatives as a group making a statement: “We don’t like anti-Semitism”. The definition of anti-Semitism they decided to point to is the thing that’s really in contention. But again, this affects nobody but the US House of Representatives.

Secondly, the vote on this took place in December. So it seems kind of late to be raging over it.

Full text of the resolution: www.congress.gov/118/…/BILLS-118hres894ih.pdf
Summary of action: www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/…/all-info

If you’re in the US and it really bugs you, I’d suggest looking up how your district representative voted and let them know how you feel about it.

IamSparticles,

Not liking it doesn’t mean you have good taste in music.

IamSparticles,

It’s a private college. I’m pretty sure they could just be charged with criminal trespassing if they were asked to leave and refused.

IamSparticles,

Shit, I’m almost 50 and I’ve been putting 10% or more of my gross pay into a 401(K) since the late 90s. For the last 10 years or so I’ve been occasionally increasing my contributions. I’m up to 16% now. Most of my employers have also done some amount of matching. I have a fair amount saved, but based on current projections, I’m still not sure I’ll have enough to retire at a reasonable age unless I drastically reduce my cost of living (which is already relatively modest). Part of the reason is that the markets have been somewhat volatile over the last 30 years. There have been at least 3 major downturns/recessions, and that means the money I have invested hasn’t grown at the rate that was projected when I started putting it away. There were several years where I saw significant losses in value. I should have a lot more than I actually do at this point. It doesn’t help that my in-laws are totally screwing us over. They retired with no savings at all, sold their home and drove around the country in an RV for 10 years. Now they’re completely out of money and their health is failing so it looks like we’re going to have to spend a significant amount of resources to support them.

IamSparticles,

I think it’s hilarious that the Texas officials are trying to spin this as “We drove those evil child mutilators out of our state!” while SCH is just like “We never actually did any business in Texas. This doesn’t impact us.”

IamSparticles,

It’s not a solution. It’s just an alternative ID check currently offering a way for people with more money to skip to the front of the line. They still have to go through the same TSA screening. If everyone used the service it would offer zero benefit. So no, it’s not a solution.

IamSparticles,

You make a lot of blanket statements without having any actual data to back any of it up. Home schooling CAN be a very positive experience, but it can also be a dumpster fire with little or no oversight. The truth is that we have very little data about the academic performance or even welfare of home-schooled children in the US because in many states they aren’t required to meet even basic curriculum or assessment goals. The only information we do have is largely coming from providers of home schooling curriculums who are motivated to show positive outcomes.

I’m glad it worked out well for you, but if you haven’t watched the Shiny Happy People documentary series about the Duggar family and the IBLP (who have millions of families following their curriculum), you ought to check it out.
