I think I will toss SHE'S FLEEING A BYRONIC HERO in at the end of Volume 2. That novella owes a great deal to the SNL "Romance Bookstore" skit, which reduces me to a cackling mess each time I watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmRhnDVMnn8

@lilithsaintcrow Regarding Byron, I hope to never forget what I read on another toot some days ago: "He was such an arsehole that two separate literary trends were started just to not hang out with him at a party." (referring to Polidori's Vampyre and Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein'). :blobcatjoy:

Still just gobsmacked by the arrogance and entitlement of the Angry Robot / Storywise thing.

Storywise's whole pitch is "turn your slush pile into revenue!" And yet AR claims disingenuously to think the submissions it's turning over wholesale "won't be retained".

@cstross Despite the liberal revolutions of the XIX Century, most nobility kept their contacts and most of their fortune, and the Bourgeoisie climbed on top of the working class to add more fuckers to the extractive class, now powered with machines, and once they got there, they wanted the same hereditary thing as the nobs.

I am watching these days 'Parks and Recreations' and I am on the last season, the one with the plot of land and the "free" Wi-Fi company Grizzld, which is a very thinly veiled stand-in for Facebook/Meta and… not to spoil it, but fuck, did they have enough to see through their bullshit back in 2016.

It's always bothered me that when people adapt Kafka's Metamorphosis they depict Gregor Samsa as a roach. Cockroaches do not undergo metamorphosis. They are born as nymphs which are just smaller wingless versions of the adult form.

Kafka writes that Gregor can only enjoy rotten food. Which also makes him not at all roach-like. Roaches strongly prefer fresh vegetables to rotten ones.

I always imagined him as a beetle. Which implies that the man Gregor was a larvae for all his pre-bug life.

@player_03 @roadriverrail @sinvega @futurebird I have three Night Vale t-shirts because it helped me go through one of the worst periods of my life. If anything it captures perfectly how sometimes "humour" is just another name for acceptance of cosmic, existential dread.

Hearing a review of '3 Body Problem' by one of the S&F&T youtubers I follow, who's a fan of the books, and how he points out the things I feel are good about the show and I suspected (I haven't read the books) that were positive changes.

Illuminatus,
@Illuminatus@mstdn.social avatar

Apropos of a point that was raised in the review, and it may be an unpopular opinion, but I have no fucks to give about it: if your high concept "hard" sci-fi novel has two-dimensional characters because "it's about the ideas", sincerely, scrap your novel and write an essay, because that's old bullshit already. There is no fucking need to sacrifice character complexity in the name of "big ideas", and it's just a lazy excuse for being a lazy author.

#writersCoffeeClub 3/22: Are there any books which should be banned, or is book banning always wrong?

I draw a line between fiction and non-fiction (or fic presented as non-fic) intended to persuade or make an ideological argument. Clearly-identified fiction shouldn't be banned. Presenting-as-non-fic like "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" is flat-out toxic to a society, as is non-fic crank science and "scientific racism", eg. "The Bell Curve".

The Bible? Toxic AF, presents as non-fic: ban!

Illuminatus,
@Illuminatus@mstdn.social avatar

@guyjantic @cstross My point would be that it's not the same "banning" as "disallowing free access", and hence I would keep hate propaganda in a special section you'd need a "maturity" test to get in, just as we don't allow just anyone to drive two+ ton automobile machines or handle weapons just like that*.

*For a certain geographical value of "we".

Unpopular take: when people say that a satire of fascism is badly made because the fascists don't feel ashamed or ridiculed by such satire work, they are missing the point completely; any satire of fascism will (usually) point at the ridiculousness and horror of those fascist beliefs, but you cannot ridicule or shame fascists based on that not because how the satire is made, but because the fascists embrace that horror. They want to be horrible and ridiculous people.
