Why is Freelancer still the best? (slrpnk.net)

I was playing some Everspace 2 and while it sure is pretty and feels pretty good there was something lacking that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. I’m only 20 hours or so into it but I just felt like it wasn’t quite living up to my memories of Freelancer....

Not only does this apply to trade lanes but with regards to where you could go via jump gates or with jump holes.

You could think of jump gates like a space highway, often placed at the edges of systems connected to the rest of the important spots (or at least the important/civilized/non-criminal locations) in a system with trade lanes. Want to go to another system? You used the jump gates to do so.

This works fine for a good majority of accessing the systems in the game, but once you start getting to the more undeveloped, frontier systems, your ability to travel is also affected, like if you had to drive down a rough, dirt road as opposed to a tarmac highway.

You may have to forgo the use of trade lanes entirely in some places that don’t have them and some systems are not accessible via jump gates either, with you needing to find jump holes instead to reach them. In fact, to get some of the best ships in the game you’d have to access the Outcasts factions home planet which you can only do via said jump holes.

I thought it was really cool how they did that, was an effective little change in gameplay to show the development of a location and made exploring and going off the beaten track super rewarding!

I wouldn't necessarily say excited myself, it feels more bittersweet. On the one hand it like sucks for folk on a personal level who might have really enjoyed being part of a certain community, or all the work people have put into moderating, posting content or their work on a third party app is just going up in smoke in a snap.

But on the other, it feels like sweet sweet delicious karma for the stupid bullshit Reddit's leadership have done over the years and getting to see the birth of something new and better to come out of the ashes. Hopefully this place sticks around because its felt like a breath of fresh air honestly.

Pull a little silly and just keep slighty moving the buoys further up the river every night and see how far they can get before someone notices

Ahhhh I know the pain bud, I've struggled with that myself as well, in a better spot than I was though still a bit of derp. Felt like I was a complete snoozefest of a person and that I was pretty unlikeable, depression is a total bitch like that.

Don't mean you're a boring person though, like it seems you enjoy a nice mix of stuff and there ain't no shortage of folk on here who dig things like programming, comics, etc as well on here and folk are pretty chill and welcoming from what I've seen so far too.

Credit where credit is due though, its a really difficult thing trying to live your life with depression hanging over you, but hey you've still gone and made a post and are starting on anti-depressants, these are some pretty awesome big steps even if they don't particular feel like it right now :)

Good god I knew it wasn't going to go well but I didn't think they'd crash and burn it THIS bad.

The bar was on the floor and they still managed to somehow clip underneath it through the floor, end up in some backrooms-esque dimension only to trip on a banana peel and land face first in a pie.

But we need the sacrifices else how will line go up? :(

Its a little silly but I do enjoy those little things they add to a game that don't really add much in terms of gameplay, heck you're even able to play the game without making use of them, but are a nice way of sort of just "grounding" yourself in the world for a time, giving you some time to pause and reflect a little on whats been happening.

Stuff like pulling out a guitar with Into the Radius and trying to strum out a lil beat or stopping in at a diner in Shadows of Doubt and having a little coffee and watching the world go by while mulling over a case that you're on. I think that kind of stuff is pretty rad.

Oh yeah, Deep Rock is good for that, getting some beers, having a little dance, getting pissed off at tossing barrels into the ring, finding the little football and the goal posts and having a game of that, its great xD

Moneymunkie,
@Moneymunkie@beehaw.org avatar

Haha yeah I remember that too! That game was a pretty chill one to play with friends, just sailing around with your instruments and getting into the occasional scrap with another ship, good times.

I've certainly enjoyed my time with it so far, and I've found it to really scratch that detective noir itch quite well. Its early access mind you so I've encountered a few bugs here and there, and it might feel a little repetitive after a while (an issue that I imagine will be ironed out more as the game gets fleshed out more) but what's there was still pretty fun and for the price I say it was worth it for me :)

Does anyone else here struggle with dyscalculia? (my.clevelandclinic.org)

The link I shared has a lot of good information about this condition; it’s similar to dyslexia but for math. In school math was always my worst subject and it often took me multiple tries to pass my math classes. It baffled everyone around me because I was good at all my other subjects. I hadn’t heard of it until last year...

Moneymunkie,
@Moneymunkie@beehaw.org avatar

I deal with this and its a pain, like if I'm not using my fingers to keep track when doing simple maths or having a calculator to aide me, then it becomes a bigger slog than it ought to be ughhhhhh

Random opinion I needed to tell the world: It's not weird or bad that kids want to grow up to be influencers.

Apparently these days, the most popular dream job among children is influencer. I've seen articles about it, and both the articles and the comments are invariably full of judgy statements about how Kids These Days^TM^ are such narcissists/their brains are being rotted by social media/they don't want to do anything valuable with...

Moneymunkie,
@Moneymunkie@beehaw.org avatar

Mean to me it feels like when this gets brought up in an article, its another one of those moral panic sort of things that go "look at what the kids want to be when they grow up, society is in decline!" as if they didn't have dreams of being a movie star or something when they were young. I wanted to be a astronaut despite my fear of going on rollercoasters lol, kids love dreaming big regardless of how actually feasible those dreams are.

And I can see why being an influencer would be appealing, getting to feel cool and popular, the perks that come with it like free stuff, having it revolve around an area they are passionate in like gaming for example. Plus considering that to those kids who might be inspired to become an influencer from following one, they've probably also gotten the sense that it must be one of the best jobs ever since they've probably only gotten to see the good, fun, positive sides of the job as thats usually the stuff that gets posted, but not so much with the bad side of it. Burning out is a fairly common problem for one, especially with a big pressure to keep pumping out content super regularly.

Personally not for me though, the idea of fame just doesn't appeal at all to someone scared of people like me and I'm burnt out enough as is haha.

Moneymunkie,
@Moneymunkie@beehaw.org avatar

Its funny that you mention that because I have joked in the past with folk asking what my sexuality was as just being "yes", else I'd probably have to give them a five page essay on it instead xD

Moneymunkie,
@Moneymunkie@beehaw.org avatar

Theres a part of me that just wants to put X down just so I can say that its because I'm extreme yeahhhhhhhh!

God though are you like my clone or something, cus I also found myself vibing with polyamory for similar reasons. Like I've definitely struggled with feeling for more than one person and how crushing it can be when you're worrying about being unfaithful or selfish when you're with somebody who doesn't feel similar. Just think it would be awesome if my partner or partners along with myself can feel safe and free to explore these feelings without worrying, I'd want them to feel happy and if another person would add to that for them then even better! Plus its less pressure on myself to meet their emotional needs since I can struggle with my own brain gremlins at times and I might not be able to fully help, even though I would really want to.

Moneymunkie,
@Moneymunkie@beehaw.org avatar

Oh for sure, monogamy is perfectly valid too! I wouldn't be going around proclaiming poly is somehow superior since different ways of being fit differently for different people and thats ok!

Gosh I dunno I could go as far as surgery though, like at most getting maybe more of a feminine figure or a bit of booba as I'm a bit squeamish at the idea of surgery, but then again thats maybe just cus I just hesitate a lot and overthink things so maybe that will change haha

I’ve had a few ideas why they might act like that. Perhaps it comes from a place of shame? They get horny over it but due to how they’ve developed negative views on LGBT+ people they feel disgusted or ashamed with themselves and then feel compelled to then go on a crusade against “le gays” as a form of projection, to prove that they aren’t “one of them”. Mean think of all those times people who’ve been pretty outspoken in their anti-LGBT views only to later be caught having seen a bunch of guys on Grindr or been identified at a gay orgy or something, feels like a meme at this point.

Maybe its from paranoia that they’ll be caught out and think if they’re the ones that shout the loudest against them, then people won’t think theres a chance they are LGBT+, which could have pretty devastating consequences for them where being found out could lead to social ostracism, or at least the perception thats what would happen.

Or perhaps its just pure opportunism and they don’t really care about if its consistent or not. Hell they might not actually have any actual hatred towards them but do so because it will get them more votes in an election where a sizeable section of the electorate are quite bigoted or to get invited to give talks, write books, make a podcast, etc. Hate is a strong emotion and be exploited quite effectively in the right places if you’re looking to make a profit.

Now I wouldn’t say thats an exhaustive list of all the potential reasons why people might still go on to be bigoted to LGBT+ people despite their hornyiness towards them, cus theres probably about as many possible reasons for that as there are people out there, but theres a few theoretical ways I could see how it might happen.
