my games are still on sale on itch and steam for the next 3 days. we're struggling to reach the end of kitsune tails development (a mario-like platformer with a very gay story) without running out of money, so any support would be greatly appreciated

Spent four hours making this Guinness stew, two of it just simmering.

It ended up nearly as good as the stuff we had on our Ireland trip last year.

You can add gun types that you need or even add extra detail. (as I did on this, adding missing straps above the knee)

Nobody before or after this has culture. Your mind has never existed on a precipice of infinity. To know actual, true awe in beholding a thing produced at the same speed of your perception, that has never existed. That was impossible. You are empty because you have never felt joy.

Released in 2015, Soda Dungeon is a free-to-play idler RPG with pixel graphics. It’s the first game in the Soda Dungeon series.

The gimmick of the game is that you must manage a tavern that will attract heroes who will go on quests for you. To do this, you must create great decor and provide a wide variety of soda at the bar. Apparently, heroes love soda. No beer for them, they’re all about the fizzy drinks.

Naturally, you start of with guys who aren’t really warriors. They’re soda addicts who are pumped with liquid courage. But as they go into battle, they collect loot. And with this loot, you can hire better heroes, buy better weapons, and acquire more abilities.

When I say this is casual, this is as casual as it gets. You don’t even need to actively play. The game will automatically do the playing for you. And other than buying and selling weapons, there’s not much in the way of inventory management. Your heroes are automatically assigned the best weapons and armour.

I beat the first “dimension” fairly easily. It took some grinding for about two hours. And when I beat the final boss, I was told that I’d have all my items and achievements removed – I’d have to start from scratch. Naturally, I’m not in favour of re-doing things all over again, so I’m not likely to play this again. Still, I had fun for what is, essentially a free-to-play game.

Naturally, this is a point and click affair. Controls aren’t really an option. This requires a mouse.

I like the graphics quite a lot. It’s pixel art goodness with lots of colours and great character models. Obviously, this won’t stress your GPU, but games aren’t merely about the whiz bang, are they?

The sound effects are nice but not spectacular. It’s basic RPG battle effects. The sound track isn’t as retro as the graphics, but it’s synth-laden and fun.

Soda Dungeon can run on most basic modern hardware. You need a quad core CPU, 512MB of RAM, 2GB of VRAM, and 70MB of space. While Soda Dungeon was only made natively for Windows, I got it running fine on Linux via Proton. On Steam Deck, it runs flawlessly.

In addition to PC, Soda Dungeon has been released for iPad, iPhone, and Android. It has not been ported to console platforms.

While Soda Dungeon has no DLC, there’s lots of micro-transactions. However, I don’t feel that micro-transactions impede basic play and I’m able to advance well with no monetary investment. But if you don’t want to earn anything, you can just buy stuff.

An Productions and Poxpower collaborated to make Soda Dungeon. Five years later, both those devs collaborated again to make the sequel, Soda Dungeon 2. They haven’t made any further games since then.

On Steam, Soda Dungeon has a 94% positive rating. It’s easy to see why because Soda Dungeon does everything it promises. It gives you the satisfaction of running an RPG while keeping it casual enough so that you can do other things while you’re playing. A few people complain that it’s too easy, lacks depth, and that it’s essentially a mobile game – but oh well.

I’m not going to pretend that Soda Dungeon is a lost classic or a hidden gem because it’s not. But it scratches an itch. If you want an RPG without it taking over your life, Soda Dungeon is pretty good.

Now other people have told me that idlers have proven too addictive to them, and for that reason, they’re off the table. Obviously, if that’s you, I sympathize.

I am shocked that anyone would get deep into these games because it seems like the entire point is that they’re not supposed to be deep. However, I also acknowledge that everyone’s brain is wired a little bit different. What may be benign to some people might prove to be malignant to others.

But hey, I’m also the kind of guy who goes to a casino, milks a $20 bill for two or three hours – then leaves if I’ve either doubled my money or ran out of $20. Not to say I’ve never dealt with addiction – I’m still using nicotine lozenges so that I don’t ever smoke cigarettes again. I’m just trying to say that everyone is a little bit different when it comes to things that prove to be obstacles.

So while Soda Dungeon is free-to-play, if you’re the kind of person who’s been known to drop hundreds or thousands of dollar on micro-transactions on an idler, know your limits and simply don’t play them.

For everyone else who’s content to not play with real money, Soda Dungeon can provide a few hours of fun.
