As is tradition, the house now smells like whatever fragrance I put in the soap. This time it's spearmint. Quite lovely, actually. 😁

It looks like it lightened up overnight, but most of what I see is soda ash. 😜

The small crack and pulling from the edge tells me it had some heat in it when I wrapped it up. We'll let it sit another day before trying to get it out of the mold.

I made some red-and-white soap a couple months ago that took 5 days to firm up enough to cut. This is the same recipe with a pretty significant reduction in water content, and it's still super soft. I imagine I won't be able to cut it until next week some time.

The red-and-white soap turned out to be pretty good once it cured, so I'm hoping this one will be in the same boat. Still removing the recipe from the book, though.

This batch actually turned out pretty good. It just looks terrible because I put too much water in it so it wound up sloshing around a bit. I may give it another shot next time I have the lye out.

@jdh_exc @soapmaking I started with a cold-process kit from Brambleberry that included everything I needed to get started. It also had a nice instructional card that I keep in my recipe notebook for reference.

If you want to go off-brand, you can use this recipe I have for a Basic Trinity. It's the base I use when I'm doing color, fragrance, EO, molding, curing, whatever experimentation.

Basic Trinity

For a 3x3 travel-sized-bar mold (2.3 oz X 9)

Palm Oil : 4.5 oz
Olive Oil : 6.2 oz
Coconut Oil : 3.4 oz

Sodium Hydroxide : 2.1 oz
Distilled Water : 4.7 oz

Optional:
Sodium Lactate : 1 tsp

This is a very generic soap and should make a good starter. Convert units as needed.

You'll need the usual PPE (eyes, hands, sleeves, shoes) and ventilation for the sodium hydroxide.

If you want more details, let me know. I'm glad to tell you everything I know (which will take about 37 seconds).
