New Post - Ex-Owner Wants To Walk Our On His Own

Bonnies old owner got in contact last weekend to ask whether we'd be open to him taking her for a walk around town for an hour.

We replied and said that we weren't comfortable with this, which resulted in some fairly grumpy pushback.

In this post, I put my thoughts in order a bit.

I'm curious to hear whether there's anyone who would have allowed it?

@ben NTA for sure. This one hits quite hard for me, as we unexpectedly adopted another cat earlier this year. I don't know exactly what about his previous family caused him to move out and live under a neighbours tree in preference to staying in his old home, but he quite clearly has some trust issues that he's slowly starting to get over. If his old owners (who basically abandoned him) wanted back in his life I would also not consider it to be in his best interests.

if you wanted to set up a “British restaurant” abroad, to which people would go to, much like they go to an Indian or Chinese restaurant, what dishes would you include on the menu as quintessential British gastronomy?

bencc,
@bencc@morehammer.uk avatar

@moof toad in the hole. Pie, mash and gravy. I think you need to include roast beef and lamb too. Spotted dick, Eton mess, syrup sponge. Angel delight.

bencc,
@bencc@morehammer.uk avatar

@quixoticgeek @moof Also good choices. Agreed, re afternoon tea. Sandwiches in general, ploughmans lunch also.

bencc,
@bencc@morehammer.uk avatar

@quixoticgeek @moof huh, TIL

bencc,
@bencc@morehammer.uk avatar

@quixoticgeek @moof Yeah, I deal with that a fair bit with BBQ cuts where the default is american butchery.

bencc,
@bencc@morehammer.uk avatar

@quixoticgeek @moof It's increasingly becoming like that here. Ours closed down for a while (the owner died) and we found a lot of 'local' butchers are just buying in packaged meat. Thankfully they've reopened and are back to doing local high welfare meat, but it was an eye opening few weeks, and not in a good way.

Do you think, if these were signs to tell pedestrians of something coming up, instead of signs telling cars what is coming up, they would have put them in the road?

bencc,

@revk When this happened near us, I contacted the council to complain about the obstruction and they were moved into the road.

Those of you who have a , what are your use-cases for smart plugs?

Most of my electrical things aren't just on/off.

I've got a light, a fan, and an electric blanket which can be controlled from the plug.

Other things (like TV, kettle, etc) need interaction after the power is turned on.

Have you found any good uses for plugs?

(Not interested in rants about security & privacy, thanks.)

bencc,
@bencc@morehammer.uk avatar

@Edent my old stereo amp is plugged into the tv, but draws about 35w when idle. Home assistant pings the TV IP and turns on the amp when it’s on and off when it’s been off for 5 minutes.

Like utility bills, hotel reservations, and other domestic accounts.

Please 🔁 the 📊 for extra reach 🙂

@Edent To expand on my answer, we have a joint email address that goes to both of us and also a shared password vault with common stuff in.

I had a LINX board meeting in Peterborough today. So I had to drive 115 miles there, and 115 miles back.

And, again, I’m finding that EV driving is awesome.

I parked in a carpark in Peterborough that has a rapid charger. The car has very nearly enough capacity to do the journey without topping up the charge. And of course I left home with a “full tank”. Topped up for ten minutes once there, whilst I was paying for parking.

Cost only slightly over 10p a mile. Far cheaper than petrol. Win.

At Spanish railway stations in order to take a high speed train you have to go through security. Including x-ray scanners.

What can't you take on a Spanish high-speed train? Is a box of wood working tools ok? Craft supplies including your exactoknife? Can a chef take their knife roll? It feels like a fundamental failure of public transport if a crafts person can't take the tools of their trade on the train.

bencc,
@bencc@morehammer.uk avatar

@quixoticgeek makes me think of the rules about locking knives on penknife type tools here. My leatherman wave is illegal unless I have a “good reason” for carrying it, so if I have a load of other work tools in my bag for work stuff that’s probably fine. If I were carrying it on its own because it’s handy, possibly not good enough.

    @markusl given nobody else is bothering so we’re no longer wearing masks for the protection of others, vented masks are much more comfortable to wear so worth bearing in mind. I like the auras but my partner prefers the 3M vflex ones which are a different shape.

    These are fun - seems they can easily be re-flashed (over BLE) to be sane, and not need an app.

    And I have now made my modules work with them (when reflashed).

    At £9+battery from Amazon, that is crazy! And, wow, 10 for £30 on AliExpress including battery!

    I am planning to set up one of these, a Shelly Mini, and a wax radiator actuator, to allow per room radiator control at my daughter's house.

    🆕 blog! “Fixing clock drift on the Watchy”

    I'm getting increasingly annoyed with SQFMI's Watchy. The documentation is terrible, the device is fragile, and now it turns out that the "Real Time Clock" loses several seconds per day! Which means, after a couple of weeks the watch is a couple of minutes fast. Ugh. But, on the other hand, you can reprogram it […]

    bencc,
    @bencc@morehammer.uk avatar

    @Edent it’s extremely weird because it claims to use the ds3231, I have those in other projects and they’re extremely accurate (and temperature compensated). Is the watch definitely setting the rtc time correctly after ntp, and reading the time from the rtc rather than relying on the time as the cpu is tracking it?

    bencc,
    @bencc@morehammer.uk avatar

    @Edent Aha, it looks like they quietly changed the RTC to one that's less good for the 1.5/2.0 revisions :( https://github.com/sqfmi/Watchy/issues/103
