Time to watch "Station Eleven" again.

donkeyherder,

@violetmadder @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs 😅 I read the book and decided I didn’t need to see the show!

donkeyherder,

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs @violetmadder my brain doesn’t like screens! Give me a podcast or audiobook so I can let my adhd hands do something! If you make me sit on the couch for screens I’ll just end up reading a book on my phone 😅

I am just wondering why people get dogs who are bred so specifically but then put them in a life that goes against their nature. Like, why do people have St. Bernards if they aren't rescuing people in the Swiss Alps? Do you really think you can make them happy in your condo?

I don't even like Van Halen, haven't since middle school. Why do I have this record?!?!

donkeyherder,

@ai6yr it’s pretty fascinating to watch sessile households sort through their detritus. My husband and I have been together for the whole 21st century, and we’ve moved like … 13 times? My wtf-stuff problems are far more likely to be like the time I accidentally threw away all the Xmas stuff in one of the moves 😅

Antique clothes are so small not because people were smaller but because the extra small clothes were worn less so they survived.

donkeyherder,

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs also, sewing machines absolutely revolutionized clothing. Before we had them, people made clothing that was designed to be ripped apart and remade over and over, so the big dress would become a different frock and then a little kid’s dress and then they’d wear it to shreds. After sewing machines were invented, the whole system changed, and patterns began to be made that really used up the fabric in different ways. A princess seamed bodice (using multiple panels sewn together for a curved fit) just can’t be picked apart and remade like a tunic-style top can!

Not convinced these roofers know what they’re doing. A few days ago the stripped the old shingles then laid down new rolls in the center section. Now they are cutting up random sections. They appear to have no intention of fixing the significant dip in the peak of the roof. Meanwhile it’s going to rain tonight and all weekend. I’d be tarping that thing, not creating new holes.

donkeyherder,

@exador23 I saw that post, took a nap (unrelated, honestly), and woke up still thinking about that sagging roof.

donkeyherder,

@ai6yr @exador23 ehhh, if the roofers don’t fall through it’s fine. Don’t worry about it. :dismissive hand wave:

donkeyherder,

@exador23 @ai6yr makes the gutters more efficient to have it all collect in that dip first? 😂

CNN: Authorities are pausing search & recovery efforts for the 4 additional people presumed dead after the bridge collapse, the superintendent of Maryland State Police said Wednesday evening.

“At this point, based upon the conditions, we are now moving from a recovery mode to a salvage operation," he said.

"Because of the superstructure surrounding what we believe were the vehicles and the amount of concrete and debris, divers are no longer able to safely navigate and operate around that," he said. "We have exhausted all search efforts."

...based on sonar scans, officials believe that the vehicles are "encased in the superstructure & concrete" of the bridge.

donkeyherder,

@exador23 @deewani I keep thinking that at least three people (pilot, radio control, the boots on the ground who closed the bridge) did the right thing, almost instantly, as the catastrophe unfolded.

Happy Wednesday, y’all; I’ve finished these pants three days before I’m going to wear them! I did a running stitch around the perimeter of the buttonhole before I cut the slit and stitched around it, and it came out very nicely.

Looking at the finished buttonhole through the round sewing magnifier. It’s tidy!

I am out of the house today, for the first time in over a week. Two weeks? More? It’s been so long I can’t remember!

Stopped by Tacos Moras on St. Clair West in #Toronto for a delicious #Mexican Torta. The bun! So good. #food #lunch

Lightly toasted bun with melted cheese, beans, guacamole, carne asada, onions and cilantro.

donkeyherder,

@DanielMenjivar @sewing with plants and fabric art! The light in my sewing room is great and the overheads are on til at least 8-9 pm in winter, so houseplants thrive. Everything that outgrows the downstairs window sills gets toted up here. I’ve got a monstera, a calathea, and a philodendron that’s got vines at least 40’ long, plus some smaller succulents.
I’ve also got anarchist fabric prints, some iron on patches, and a trio of quilted tropical fish from crafters in South America.
(Related question: is there an actual way to use iron on patches? I’ve never gotten one to stay on for more than one wearing, no matter how I iron it on, and the glue makes them too thick to sew on!)

Just your occasional reminder that "bush meat" is a racist term. It is a way to make hunting wild animals seem shady in a way that is only applied to Africans. In the USA, deer is bush meat.

donkeyherder,

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs whenever I start to judge other cultures for what they eat, I remind myself how smart pigs are.

Finished my kid’s #TMNT softshell raincoat! It had been on hold while I ordered the quilted lining, then it sat while I worked on pants for myself, but I picked it back up last night and got it finished today. Kid is thrilled and husband is jealous! 😂
It’s the good old Green Pepper Oregon pattern. #sewing

Same raincoat, zipped up, with hood folded to the side and sleeves laid over the torso. The left sleeve has a large panel illustration of all four turtles, oriented sideways to the sleeve.

I keep thinking about "The Zone of Interest". It is the best Holocaust movie ever made. It is how it really was-- no one talking about it. Normal people-- not monsters. Cognitive dissonances noticed and silently struggled with. A lot of it is eerily relevant today. I think everyone should watch it.

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs almost certainly, but if I were desperate I’d order from whoever was open and tip $50 or 100% of the bill, whichever is higher.
I used to deliver pizza, ages ago, in Memphis. We did not get blizzards but we got incapacitated by weather in our own way, and sometimes you’d get crazy good tips in shitty weather.
(If you can’t afford to tip $50 on a sandwich in a blizzard, you don’t have the option of summoning food.)

Dear handy friends: my adorable and perfect angel rabbit Sebastian found this led lamp power cord irresistible. I need a new one but I can’t find a perfect match for the numbers on Amazon. None of the plugs they sell say 15v / 1a, and I no longer trust the shitty ai internet to explain electronics to me. Can any of you, like, hold my hand and reply with a link to what I need to buy? Doesn’t have to be Amazon, I just don’t know where to begin.
    Help?

    donkeyherder,

@ai6yr bless you! I’d already spliced the cord once with wire nuts when he snuck back up for more and got the pigtail! I may pry it open to see what it looks like, but I’m not a solderer. I’ve soldered a few connections, many years ago, but I think I’ll go ahead and buy the replacement.
… and figure out what to do about hiding the cables up here. They’re so incredibly sneaky!

    donkeyherder,

@ai6yr you’ve guessed tomorrow morning’s plan 😂 we have some of the plastic mesh tubing kind of protector left over from when we rabbit proofed the main floor of the house. There are doors and gates to keep them out of the bedrooms and home office, and a wire x-pen to keep them away from the media cords, and tubing on the few other cords they can reach. But they’d never gone upstairs before this week!
See, back in early February all my rats died from a rat plague the two new ones brought in. I was heartbroken and swore off rats because there’s nowhere else around here to buy rats than that one horrid pet store that I got the sick ones from.
But the kid and I missed having tiny buddies upstairs! It’s a big loft space, and I sew and he does homeschooling up there. So I switched to guinea pigs.
Ben! They’re just as magically adorable as rabbits! They’re like the tiny little charisma-bros of capybaras! They eat the same fresh greens and hay as rabbits, and they whistle when they’re excited. Mine have learned that a lot of the time, when I come upstairs and say “hey girlies,” I’m about to offer them a handful of grass or something, and they’ve started whistling as loudly as possible when they hear me on the stairs.
So this week, Sebastian the rabbit put on his detective hat. What is that noise from upstairs? Why is my food human taking handfuls of grass up there all the time? (N.b. he gets fresh sprouted wheatgrass!) He decided to come looking, and he refused to take no for an answer.
The baby gate I got for the bottom of the stairs has rabbit-sized gaps on the sides. The same wire x-pen that corrals him at night and keeps him away from the tv cords is actually no match for him - yesterday I was quietly sitting and watching, and I saw him silently lift a corner of the wire and slide under it!!
So, as one does, I was like, sure, you can hang out up here. And then today I went to the dump and then repotted seedlings instead of rabbit proofing the upstairs, and now I’m out a power converter 😂

    donkeyherder,

@ai6yr oh, and after two days of hard thinking, he’s figured out which table they live on. If he’ll quit nibbling my forbidden vines, I may put a chair beside the piggie table so he can hop up and finally stare at them.

    donkeyherder,

@ai6yr they’re a lot like cats, and arguing with a cat is like getting in a land war in Asia. I’d love to negotiate a settlement. Look how freaking cute he was earlier this afternoon!
