Iโ€™ve made my decision:
โ€“ Iโ€™m getting rid of my old iPad and wonโ€™t buy a new one.
โ€“ Iโ€™ve grown to dislike its closed OS and unrepairability. Alas, MS & Android also have downsides.
โ€“ I wonโ€™t get another tablet, but a Framework laptop to see how Linux works for me for daily use.
โ€“ Iโ€™ll keep iPhone & MacBook Pro (for now).

Iโ€™m investigating how to replace Appleโ€™s syncing services (calendar, contacts, photos, notes, etc.). Proton looks interesting: https://proton.me

@cory @rauschma Having more control over mail and calendars is a good thing in my book. Iโ€™ve moved to protonmail.

@cory @rauschma I havenโ€™t entirely switched to the proton calendar. I'm still using iCloud. Would be nice if that was easier.

In case anyone isn't aware why Thomas is flouncing off:

dutchcelt,
@dutchcelt@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw So basically, he picked up a stick of dynamite and said: "...well, this is also just a stick."

Everbody online:

  • Put it down.
  • Pick something else.
  • No, seriously, put it down, this doesn't end well
  • Literally, pick anything else. USB stick, candy cane, anything.

Everybody left the room, and he shut the door.

@jtillessen @eWalthert @nicksherman I've seen a baguette vending machine (I haven't tried it) but haven't encountered a pizza machine, so I don't know what they're like either. Is it out of order for me to suggest that calling them 'artisanal' sounds a tad optimistic? ๐Ÿ˜…

Elements in CSS layout should be mostly driven by their container. They should avoid dictating their own position.

It's pretty cool to see new uses of CSS' revert-layer. Mixins must be one of my favourites so far. I thank @knowler, @kizu, and @hi_mayank for their insight and persistence.

@simevidas Yeah, I keep forgetting to add a css timer to remove the โ€˜hiddenโ€™ value. Iโ€™ll fix it this weekend as I already have a fix ready.

dutchcelt,
@dutchcelt@mastodon.social avatar

@simevidas I've added the CSS timer. It now shows the content when JavaScript fails (and it will), is slow, or is disabled. JavaScript is a requirement for the site, but as you mentioned, it shouldn't prevent the content from being accessible. JavaScript is very fragile compared to HTML or CSS. I'll soon remove more JavaScript by converting some web components with declarative shadow dom.

Report: People are bailing on Safari after DMA makes changing defaults easier

dutchcelt,

@pablolarah I use this technique also. Styling slotted content is a pain. As I've begun using CSS layers, CSS scope is off the table. Thankfully, using a revert layer in the constructed stylesheet works well.

I get it. I get the whole point of it. But CSS logical properties are so confusing. Even after reading the first two paragraphs of https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/block-size I'm left thinking ENOUGH WITH THE FUCKIN RIDDLES.

Ok, so if display: block makes the thing full width, block-size will change the width.

lol no guess again!

dutchcelt,
@dutchcelt@mastodon.social avatar

@jaffathecake When you put it like that, it is a bit confusing.
I had to step back and think (of block) in terms of flow and its sizing merely as a consequence of that. Then it clicked, sorta.
Mental models are hard to change.

Utility-first usually means framework-first. Coding around the browser instead of for it is aiming for second best. The Web Browser was not a mistake; ignoring it is.

In the EU, iOS will soon allow multiple browser engines. Is this the end of Safari's dominance on iOS? Will it fall into obscurity? Will it eventually be discontinued? Will the tables be turned as Safari becomes a Chromium browser? That would be ironic.

@trys We're looking at using modes for viewports in a design system, and that way, I can get the two boundary values to generate a clamp. I just need to discuss (and explain) the type scale values we will use with the UX team and Bob's your uncle... so to speak.
