In light of how difficult a week its been, I'll just say this:

I intend to survive the rough few years to come. You should get it firmly in your head that you will too. Every one of us who survives this will be a gift and a blessing to the world.

As a reporter, I've followed the science of gender-affirming care from before the current political moment. I have always committed to following the evidence, whether I like it or don't like it.

Today on Assigned, I've published a piece by a freelancer who did her master's on the informed consent model of gender affirming treatment. She wrote us a digest version.

The narrative is the narrative. The evidence tells another story. #trans #science #news #journalism

We were fascinated by the work of Liv Raisner, who took a hidden camera into exploratory therapy sessions.

In an interview we asked Liv how the videos came about, what it was like in the room, and what we need to know about these dodgy practitioners. #trans #news #journalism

Is it possible to have dignity when your existence viewed as inherently ridiculous and undignified? If so, how do we resolve the tension between a mainstream that defines us as a punchline and the striving of every human for respect and dignity?

On the occasion of the Vatican releasing a statement sttacking the idea of transgender dignity, I've written this as a response, a rebuke, and a call for resistance in the face of strengthening oppression. #trans #transgender

I've been mulling an essay on the concept of transgender dignity...

...and I think the Pope himself is telling me it's time.

In the New York Times last week a pair of reactionaries argued against the term "assigned sex at birth" in an impossibly dumbed-down discussion that ignored the existence of intersex people, the reason the term exists in the first place.

On Assigned, we hold ourselves to higher standards for both scientific accuracy and thoughtfulness.

Therefore, please enjoy this opinion essay by a medical doctor arguing assigning sex is harmful and unnecessary.

Evan is going to be a KSJ fellow!

There's a lot of work to do to ensure that Assigned Media will remain a vital and important source of trans news while our founder is at MIT working on in-depth reporting.

We're in the early stages, but rest assured, we're ON THAT SHIT.

You absolutely have to read this profile of @PghLesbian24, the blogger who broke the story of Nex Benedict's LGBTQ+ identity.

I just... my descriptions can't do it justice. Deeply moving. Real. Important.

It was a real mystery, and required hours of reporting, but we found it.

The source of claims that a new Scottish hate crime law would jail people for misgendering a trans person turned out to be...

...the UK press. They made it up. Completely.

Full story here, including a transcript of a BBC Radio 4 program that proves the press shenanigains:

I have to admit, I did not expect the nonstory that #TDOV happened to fall on Easter this year to become an all-consuming conservative obsession approaching the level of last year's nonstory that Dylan Mulvaney did an Instagram spot with Budweiser.

What this is about - what all of these stories are ultimately about - is an attempt to terrorize the #transgender community out of public life. #news #journalism

New on Assigned, I found out earlier today that Jonathan Haidt, the author of the splashy new pop-psych book about how smartphones are bad for kids, believes and is promoting a fringe theory that kids are becoming due to social media as well.

Haidt told PBS that "clusters of girls" are developing gender dysphoria when they never had it before.

The problem, of course, is that there's no research whatsoever backing that up.

I wrote about Easter falling on the same day as #TDOV last week, when it was just a twinkle in conservatives' eyes.

At the time I didn't think it would take off bc it was too dumb. As usual I overestimated just how dumb and hateful this moral panic is. #trans #news #easter

I am going to do an Assigned post, but I want to start with social:

Nex Benedict's full autopsy has been released. It shows levels of diphenhydramine (benadryl) that are compatible with an overdose, according to the Advocate.

Here's my post, adding my opinion that the school officials should still be held responsible for the climate of bullying that led to this tragedy.

It is important that calls for justice don't end with the knowledge that this death was most likely a suicide.

However, it is also important to me, as a reporter, not to feed conspiracy thinking. While new info could change my assessment, this is enough for me to refer to the death as a suicide.

I rely on the support of readers to keep going. If you appreciate my work, the best way to support me is by signing up for the $5/month member's only newsletter.

This week I'm offering a sneak peek into my reporting on gender-affirming care in Finland.

Roller Derby is fighting back against a Nassau County Executive who's trying to force them to ban women.

Today on Assigned, this is a story about fighting anti-trans policies, sure. But it's also about the fight over what sports mean, and queer women fighting to define that for themselves, against the dominant culture.

I had a lot of fun with this one:

Conservatives are freaking out about , because it happens to fall on Easter Sunday this year.

There are cries of hijacking, and desecration of the holiday, which can fall anywhere between March 22 and April 25.

In my story I gave these concerns all the full respect that they deserve (ie, groundhog day jokes).

Opponents of trans women's participation in sports consistently refuse to engage with the evidence, which has shown no clear basis for a belief that trans women retain a biological advantage after testosterone suppression.

I've long taken the position that if trans women can compete fairly, they should be allowed to compete. If they can't, they should be restricted.

You'd think that would be the common sense position, but the trans debate doesn't function normally.

Emry Cohen is a transgender doctor who confronted me with a deliciously clever pitch: If 1 in 8 cis women experience breast cancer in their lifetimes, how can we say that a double mastectomy is unhealthy?

Of course I needed the full essay on THAT, and here it is, in all its contrarian makes-you-think glory.

My great failure as a journalist is that I'm completely bored by any story I assume someone else will do if I don't bother.

(This is the opposite of the killer instinct to get the scoop before my peers, be the first to report on something juicy.)

The stories I'm drawn to, the things I can't let go, are things no one else is seeing, things no editor wants to greenlight, niche things, novel things.

Stories that aren't an easy sell, risky stories, or as I see it: Interesting stories.

e_urq,
@e_urq@journa.host avatar

Currently I'm doing a deep dive on medical care in . Because it's interesting, and because I reckon no one else would.

I'm trying to get mainstream pubs interested, but if no one bites I know my readers want this exact thing from me. It's a great feeling.
