It's Friday, so time for a visit to the Geomob podcast archives.

Our recommendation for your weekend listening pleasure is @freyfogle's discussion with Laurence Penney @lorp about the world's oldest known geospatial database: Ptolemy's Geography. A fascinating look back at how it all started.

1/ Another successful meetup! Let’s recap .

Once again, a big thanks to Startup Lisboa for hosting us and our two organizers, Joana Simoes and Miguel Marques.

2/ The first talk was from Ricardo Garcia Silva. His presentation summarised a commissioned mapping project in a small parish in the Alentejo region, Colos.

Using publicly available datasets, Ricardo helped his client locate the best spots to build new solar fields.

You can find his portfolio here:

3/ The second speaker of the night was Paulo Morgado, presenting the eMOTIONAL Cities project.

https://emotionalcities-h2020.eu/

This fascinating talk covered the development of a robust mechanism for mapping city inhabitants’ emotional and neural responses to urban spaces using mobile cameras equipped with sensors and VR.

They already have active pilots in Lisbon, London, Copenhagen and Michigan.

4/ Next up was Daniel Moreno, Head of IT at CarbonSpace.

He introduced their business, explaining how they use eddy covariance towers to measure changes in an ecosystem, CarbonSpace helps users map fluctuations in naturally produced carbon, measuring emissions and successful sequestrations.

/6 @doublebyte, the organizer of Geomob Lisboa and maps extraordinaire, gave the final talk at before the much-awaited and mingling.

She chose to speak about geo-use cases of the Parquet data storage method or GeoParquet. Joana is certainly an advocate for its efficiency with large datasets.

Fun fact, she helped Paulo with 96 datasets for his eMOTIONAL Cities project!

/7 It wouldn’t be a Geomob event without the customary vote on the best speaker of the evening. Paulo’s talk on eMOTIONAL Cities captured the audience's imagination and he took the win!

He was gifted a beautiful vintage map of Lisbon.
