father, husband, #squash player, heart attack survivor, still overweight, #rugby supporter, and (I think) general nice guy. I love #open-source software and all it stands for. I'm not sure where I stand on the political spectrum. don't like nazis and racists. believe in individual rights. decentralize over centralize. does that make me a liberterian?

All this eclipse talk has me getting more and more excited about the 2030 eclipse in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. Totality passes through Windhoek, Klerksdorp, Bergville, Winterton, Howick, Pietermaritzburg, Durban, Umhlanga, Scottburgh and a bunch of other towns that I'm less concerned about!

Long night so far.

A call from my sister just after midnight that she’d taken mum to the hospital.

Been holding bedside vigil while sister goes home and gets some sleep. Doctors running tests and whatnot. Morphine for the pain. Machines that go “bing”.

It’s about 4:30am and mum’s snoring with a plethora of tubes and wires.

Eyes are heavy. Chair is uncomfortable. The nurses showed me where I could make a cup of coffee for myself.

Should have taken my car for a longer test drive sooner! Rear brakes start scuffing/squeaking after a few Kms of driving, like they warm up and change shape or something.

Sigh! R3200 and not even back to where it was before I took it in for the first service. FML

For me it’s Duran Duran - Ordinary World

Which was released in 1993…

@RickiTarr 40. I finally knew enough to know I knew nothing. But I still felt bulletproof. Once I lost that feeling (9 years later), I realized how much work it would take to get it back... now there is not enough time left.

In Israel, the main operational discussion right now is about the Philadelphi Axis - the route from Rafah Crossing to the rest of Gaza. Hamas is in control of it and thus of the distribution of all supplies into Gaza (except the parts under IDF control, which have only 10% of Gaza's population at this point). Israel would like to sever it, but is running into the issue of needing to plan how to administer the delivery, and so far it's been reluctant to talk at all about administering Gaza.

For the record, I have not missed a single NYE midnight glass of champagne in over 30 years.

It can be quite lonely sometimes - I haven't been to a proper new years party since before I got married, and these days it's often just me sitting there with my bottle of MCC, waiting for the countdown so I can drain my glass and see the year in.

But I remember how fun it used to be! I'd get to the pub around 10pm, and I'd bring my bottle of cheap bubbly, and they'd keep it cool for me. Then, at the end of the countdown I'd pop the cork into the air over the crowd, and the party had officially begun. My rule was: No going home till the bottle is empty! And we'd drink, dance, move to a nightclub, dance, chat, party, move to another nightclub... all with my open bottle of sparkling wine, freely handing out mouthfuls to anybody who asked, and it was wonderful.

I grew up, studied, and was a young adult in the 90s. I saw a LOT of movies with Y2K NYE parties in them, and they left their mark on me :) And I'm proud to say that for a surprisingly long time, I managed to party with the right friends, finding the right places, to successfully capture some of that ideal.

so the Protea cricket team got smashed by India yesterday. BUT i could not help but notice that the South African cricket team does not have one local sponsor on their clothing. The South African Cricket team is sponsored by two INDIAN companies.... both don't even have products in the country. If that does not tell you how much the local industries distrust Cricket South Africa, nothing will. I wonder if the sponsors had a words and said "India must win" ?

My husband and I don’t fight very often, but one thing we do fight about is how he calls aluminum foil "tin foil" and he's like "IT'S THE SAME THING!" and I’m like "bruh, they are completely different metals, so please go consult the periodic table I've hung above our bed."

Question about the pronunciation of the word "Solder".

A few years ago, I heard somebody pronounce it "Sodder" for the first time, and oh how I laughed (I've always said something like "soul-dur". Because that's how it's spelled.)

And then one day I red some article which casually mentioned how "sodder" is the correct pronunciation, and my way is a common mispronunciation.

So the question:

Is "sodder" universally accepted as the correct pronunciation? Or is it, like Noah Webster's many improvements to English spelling, an Americanism?

george,
@george@social.crouchingpanda.co.za avatar

@uastronomer solder.... you don't get a silent 'l'

to make the scenario worse, from a RFID perspective, i can save and then emulate the tag. BUT.... when you look a the flipper filesystem, it stores the details in a file. So, concevably, i can now share this "high access" file with others and give multiple devices access to the building. Picture a underground database of Physical Access tokens for sale to office parks and buildings. Scary. You need to move off RFID tag for physical access ASAP. Disable it if you can.

Then a few days ago, I demonstrated the BLE Denial of Service attack on Android and iPhones. "How useful is this" said one bloke while waiting for his new iPhone to restart, Imagine we were in the middle of a disaster and i managed to consistently interrupt your cellular comms ? Confusion reigns.... At least now we know what the symptom looks like and what the cause is likely to be and how to prevent it going forward.... people don't like live demo's

george,
@george@social.crouchingpanda.co.za avatar

@uastronomer its exploits a issue with Bluetooth (BLE) notifications. Basically spams you. Android means you keep clicking cancel. ios seems to handle them differently and cache the requests until the phone goes into spinning wheels mode and then reboots

“It’s in many ways the crucial question that needs to be answered honestly now. Do we want Ukraine to win the war and liberate all its territory? Or Do we want Ukraine to be forced to accept a deal which hands over parts of the country to Putin? The rhetoric of western leaders is the former, though to be frank the policy looks more and more like the latter.”

@bytebro @Piousunyn @RickiTarr I would add to that : if you voted for the party that got in you lose the right to complain.... other than that, you should vote even if it is to show dissatisfaction by spoiling your vote.
