to the young graphic designers/artists that do home print media. My word of advice... DONT USE THE BAKED IN PRINT OVER NET FEATURE.
Get a cheap thin client from a thrift or e-cycler, dump windows 7 or linux on it and set up print server.
It will save you a billion years of troubleshooting and wanting to throw your expensive printer out the window.
Wishing you the best. ~An artist who hasnt had a printer issue since 2016!

What was is like growing up in the early 2000s and wanting to learn programming?

My experience.
It was opaque, the closest many of us explored was flash. Comp ed. was very basic in our school system and only by High School would you get an elective. This was dependent on the school though, some taught strictly in languages that were sunsetting or outright niche.
By the time I was in HS, they taught prog language theory. I learned Python and C# in my animation course...

@iyashikei_kris ive had friends quite recently have to learn some object pascal in university so it must still be vital somewhere :blobthinking:

@CM30 yeah as an elective class. Our highschool at one point taught C but this was quite a bit before I got there.

@SirTapTap what a good start regardless. Yeah the game dev industry right now is a wild one. I consider myself lucky to be in a pretty calm studio.

@Ronflaix ah yes, the sound of up to 10 kilovolts slapping electrons against the phosphor. That sound is how you know its working!

Im wondering if anyone here in the side of masto has any advice or experience with the Dell PowerVault MD1200 - MD1220?
I do have a PowerEdge 720 server with space for a PERC card to attach the DAS to. Im just wondering if anyone knows if these two particular PowerVault's are strictly SAS only and can only take firmware locked drives? Im thinking about getting one but dont want a massive paperweight.

@illusionofmana@socel.net avatar

Im debating making my own JBOD. I imagine it cant be too hard for me to dev out a SATA/SAS backplane I could just see If I can buy passive ones 🤔 .Though I do want to use an LSI card. The hope is to replace the Dell Poweredge 710 i have entirely with a new head system and separate JBOD. Something newer, quieter, and more power efficient. But JBOD chassis are kinda stupid expensive...

Conclusion of How I bricked a PC in 2 seconds.
Thunderbolt settings in some bios let you set the location the card is in. Idk if this refers to physical PCIe or port ID. Either way, changing this to PE3 or AIC 3 actually corrupts your bios. Doesnt matter if its EVGA, ASUS, MSI so on (all AMI based). Doesnt matter the chipset either.
The only fix is to flash bios, if not possible via flashback, then manually flash it. I hope this helps someone in the future.

How I bricked a PC in 2 seconds... Round 2.
Thunderbolt continues to be the strangest thing to KO a PC for me. Either way, were stuck at a very infamous POST code 60 "DXE Core is started". All claims on the internet are that it could be a fault with RAM, fault with CPU, bad Ram config, unsupported CPU.
No PCIe cards installed, every ram config tried, two CPUs i3 and i7. It always halts at code 60. I need a more informative hardware diag that runs bios level...

illusionofmana,
@illusionofmana@socel.net avatar

I contacted EVGA, Intel, and AMI about the issue. EVGA though they couldnt help much because of expired warranty, gave me some troubleshooting instructions and was overall really nice to chat with. Intel and AMI both pointed fingers at each other...
Dont you love big tech!

How I bricked a PC in 2 seconds.
Not looking for assistance more a vent post.
I was working on an older PC I have thats just around for multimedia and wanted to get the Thunderbolt card in it working. Apparently you have to set the bios for it like its a sound card from 1991 but whatever.
I set the PCIe ID wrong on it and bricked it. No level of reset works. It just loops POST. Ive pulled the BIOs chip and am going to perform a manual reflash. Wish me luck...

illusionofmana,
@illusionofmana@socel.net avatar

@zrail Oof yeah it sucks for sure. I pulled every PCIe device I had from mine, sound card, dual GPUs, NVME drive, Thunderbolt card. Nothing. Tried just one stick of ram and no SATA drives, with iGPU. Still no go. Hoping the bios reflash works, would hate to have to recycle this with no chance of reuse past being broken down for raw materials.

illusionofmana,
@illusionofmana@socel.net avatar

@dryak That sounds awful. This sounds familiar, pulling the battery doesnt do anything for me. Im hoping I can reflash the entire chip and get it going, else I dont think there's more I can do for it.

@gameboycamera the one on the right is super close the the Nintendo Power Japan GBflash cart I have 👀

illusionofmana,
@illusionofmana@socel.net avatar

@gameboycamera Interesting. It could be either my perspective on the colors, or my cart hasnt gained such a off color hue as yours. 🤔 I also dont have any other carts to reference at the moment. Its like a solid in between in color from a white 3DS XL and a 3DS cart.

illusionofmana,
@illusionofmana@socel.net avatar

@gameboycamera absolutely, I hope you can match that color though. I dont know what it is, but the off grey white plastic nintendo uses between its systems and carts always feel and look quite a bit more premium than their others.

I'm seriously thinking about posting my stuff on Pixelfed too, I don't know, Instagram just feels like a waste of time nowadays, although I'm not fully aware if it's necessary, as far as I know Pixelfed users can already see my art posted right (?)

illusionofmana,
@illusionofmana@socel.net avatar

@NullTheFool TBH IG has been dead for nearly 6 or 7 years now. Just overrun by bot meme accounts and a bad algo. Twitter and even here on Masto get far more genuine interactions. Masto being very much better for connecting with people imo. Thats just my personal experience though. It seems any open fed based social site is going to be a far better experience.
Good luck on your pixel journey.

Does anyone have any info on how Photoshop stores the animation timeline in a PSD? I cant seem to find that anywhere in the documentation minus some small occurrences lacking useful detail.

Hmmm either twitter(X) has changed its API or both my adblocks element blockers no longer work... I cant seem to remove the "whats happening" block from the site anymore. Something thats helped my mental health while still advertising myself on twitter.
🤔 I wonder if I can make a dynamic element blocker that just looks for the header string and removes it that way.

This is a fascinating concept for games studies - "quotes" of a game that don't just show you a clip of gameplay, but actually let you take control and try it out. It trims the ROM down to only what's needed to run the quote, so this might even pass a fair dealing/fair use test in court if it came down to it - just like quoting a passage of text, or a clip of a movie.

https://tenmile.quote.games

illusionofmana,
@illusionofmana@socel.net avatar

@misty This may be a bad take, but hear me out. Imagine this but with an AI gen prompt as the "Quote". It provides no source code and uses generic graphics for any genre. You could generate a snippet of a game idea for pitching mechanics in their most raw and uncut form. Imagine using that to explain to a programmer the type of mechanic you want in a game, or the type of base game you're after?
In art, I dont believe AI should ever be the final piece... But in planning and pre-concept, why not?
