Volunteered for CoSocial.Ca playground monitoring (Trust&Safety; aka Moderator). Feral tech support, also found stitching some yarns, trying to keep up with kid, spouse, and pets. Wondering what to be when I grow up. Might have noise cancellation on.

As you may already heard Vernissage will became independent platform (backend and web). One of the Fediverse 🌎 part like Mastodon, Writefreely, Pixelfed and others.

For this reason I would like to change current Vernissage for Pixelfed client name. Something that you will like and connect with Pixelfed 😉.

On this occasion, please send me your suggestions on what the new Vernissage for Pixelfed could be called. This is an app created with ❤️, for you, and you can create a part of it.

johannab,
@johannab@cosocial.ca avatar

@vernissage I had to go look up the translation to figure out what synonyms or allusions there might be. I think most what now come to mind are similar to some other suggestions - Curator. Exhibit or Exhibition. Gallery. You could prepend any of those with “Pix” or “Fedi” to make the association more obvious. Some things a bit more oblique: Docent. Clarity. Salon. There are probably more mellifluous translations in French!

Happy Friday!

I just in the past few minutes stumbled upon https://fediwall.social , a configurable social media wall that lets you configure and display selected public content in a rotating panel based on server, accounts, or hashtags.

You can do this on the fly, or customize and save a link, or install and run your own, by the look of it.

Mastodon.social should already be heavily limiting nudity or pornography on its instance due to German youth protection law, which mandates age verification systems to prevent kids from accessing adult content.

But they are taking a legal risk there and ignoring this law.

@thisismissem @FinchHaven @Mastodon

I don’t know how well it works as I usually have a suspend/don’t suspend decision, but don’t we essentially have this? You can refuse to accept media, that’s one of the server limit options, isn’t it?

johannab,
@johannab@cosocial.ca avatar

@thisismissem @FinchHaven @Mastodon

This is Mastodon’s available options, but Threads could implement same, and possibly better (so avatars/banners still appear, but inline images must be viewed “elsewhere”).

Tattooed people: do you like it when people ask about your tattoos?

johannab, (edited )
@johannab@cosocial.ca avatar

@evan I need a right in the middle option of either “sometimes” or “it depends”.

Because whether I like it or not is less about whether I want to answer about my ink and more about the intention or agenda behind being asked.

UN troops, on the ground, ensuring the safety of the civilian population and the delivery of humanitarian aid.

That's what we have a United Nations for.

johannab,
@johannab@cosocial.ca avatar

@evan 'Bout damn time.

Canada's total abandonment of any effort to continue peacekeeping operations has similarly frustrated me. Time was, OUR troops would've been the first in to a UN mission like that.

I sometimes wonder whether Prime Minister wouldn't be happier as a provincial premier. Pharmacare, daycares, rental law, school breakfasts — these are all properly provincial jurisdictions; inflation, national defence, crime — federal jurisdictions. Is it a coincidence that the condition of these latter has deteriorated while the Trudeau ministry has spent time and money the former?

Maybe PM Trudeau has been constrained by the agenda...

johannab,
@johannab@cosocial.ca avatar

@mpjgregoire I think he’s been forced into this focus by our ridiculous provincial premieres and their neocon grift nonsense. Also, you’re right that Singh’s fundamental focus on the federal level taking over the nuts and bolts of delivery of provincial services is skewing things.

It’s not wrong for the Feds to try to sway and structure things (with funding, program outcome definitions) but it shouldn’t be the direct focus of the PMO, the ministries should be driving it ...

phew. after feeling like months of spinning my wheels in loose sand … the grad school admission last week was followed quickly by a job interview setup for this Thursday.

and I got an assignment in, ON TIME, last night (1 assignment and one group project to go, for THIS course.)

johannab,
@johannab@cosocial.ca avatar

@timbray Waterloo, School of the Environment, “Master of Future Cities”.

I’m still not ENTIRELY sure what the aim of the program is, but it seems neither are they … except they have funding and 20-ish fascinating-sounding courses to pick from. It’s a coursework/professional masters, so format similar to an online MBA or MPH and the like, but focused on urbanism and environment, technology and policy.

johannab,
@johannab@cosocial.ca avatar

@timbray Already here, so no changes planned, though the program is hybrid and asynchronous, if needed. There is a 1-week residency I MUST do FIRST, but I can walk to UW. The trickier bit will be negotiating having 3 weeks of summer leave (2 for an already-planned huge family event, 1+ a day for the residency) into a new job if I were to get an offer.

The rest is 1 field course (TBD where/when), 8 credits I can complete independently over 3-6 semesters, and a capstone project (mini-thesis).

A year after cutting loose to be independent I finally feel my brain coming back online.

2020-2023 was a fucking burnout machine.

My creativity returned almost instantly after leaving the corporate gobbledygook factory.

My ability to sustain focus and apply that creativity into long-term strategic ways...

that took much, much longer.

Price your burnout. PRICE. YOUR. BURNOUT.

johannab,

johannab,

Wow. This situation is something else, and totally skeeves me out as the “academic” involved was a lecturer where I am currently enroled, and apparently still IS at my alma mater.

Sorry for the paywall. I debated posting the “paper” that led to this but ended up feeling like that kindof elevates the Petersoneseque incelery instead of the academic/campus safety issues. Feel free to ask if you want to go digging, or look up @dfisman.bsky.social ’s posts.

johannab,
@johannab@cosocial.ca avatar

@evan I possibly take shit like this a bit personally. I almost said a bit TOO personally, but no, to do so is dismissive of my own experiences as an undergraduate, in an engineering school, with professors or grad students who got waaaaayyyy out of their lane with students. I don’t even mean as sexual predators, just in abusing their positions to control and manipulate undergrad lives in ways that had nothing to do with their academic areas or courses.

johannab,
@johannab@cosocial.ca avatar

@timbray I gather at least the guy is “only” a sessional instructor at this point, which means he’s not yet entrenched in the faculty. Hoping Guelph is just slower in getting there. He’s not yet accused of an offense, outside of being waaayyy out of his academic lane and publishing this creepy garbage in a deceptive way (making it look like it’s a valid research paper affilated with UW). But it would certainly be a bad look and likely liability to have someone like that advance as faculty.

johannab,
@johannab@cosocial.ca avatar

@evan Thanks. It’s long past, but my wished-for return to university studies has really brought up for re-examination some of the reasons that it’s taken me so long to get back to it.

I keep almost talking myself out of it before I’ve given it another go. There are lots of reasons around it, but the fact that we still hear about stuff like this pushes all the wrong buttons.

I remain convinced that one of the two most important things any society can do to shore up democracy is to end FPTP, preferably with a move to a truly proportional representation system.

The other is UBI/GLI of some form.

So… if they’re gonna dump staff who’re trying to unionize. I have my music sitting on computers in my house, 400GB in Apple lossless, I have a fast Internet connection (firewalled of course), I wanna be able to do “shuffle all songs” or "shuffle Miles Davis" while I’m driving or walking around out in the world.

Anyone out there actually done this? [Don’t wanna be rude but would prefer to avoid answers of the “this should work” flavor.]

@timbray @Crispius I’m also currently an Apple Music subscriber, but for years just synced devices and ran either a cable or BT into the car. If spouse is using Android Auto, i can just connect via BT, reverse if my phone’s doing the driving.

I keep having a specific kind of exchange about this mastodon/bluesky thing. It goes something like this.

Me: I have a bunch of concerns around what actions people are taking if they care about their privacy on here. Yelling at one guy is not sufficient.

Them: Of course he's wrong! You must be saying you don't care about privacy at all!

It's pretty frustrating.

johannab,
@johannab@cosocial.ca avatar

@polotek IFTAS.org is one group trying to work on these things. We’re hosting these exact conversations about - and often with! - AP and Fediverse developers, including “the bridge guy” who is a pretty great-seeming guy and has handled the blast zone he got into admirably.

I am stretched way thin right now but have a lot of rough scribbles I need to turn into things like “what you can (and can’t) expect from moderation” and “your responsibilities for your own safety on AP “
