@luciedigitalni As a retiree, it just too complicated. I’d love to, but I don’t have a super fund anymore and it’s silly to open one for $50. Tax obligations to Centrelink are problematic. It would be great to have a go but the hurdles to jump are just too much for my retired brain.

Australia Post will only be delivering letters to the home every second day from Monday instead of every day. This is due to a substantial reduction in mail volume over the years while parcel volume has increased substantially.

@perkinsy Oh, we’ve only had every 2nd day for a while now. If I remember, I check the mail once a week, and usually have nothing anyway.

You know what job is amazing to do in 37°C heat in the full sun? Cleaning the putrefying sludge of decomposed food scraps and dead maggot mats out of the bottom of the “green” council bin (large 240L wheelie bin for food and organic waste)

As someone who's being doing a lot of reading about the early history of particularly since it was selected as the national capital, I find it fascinating to watch a similar process happening not too far away in real time

@luciedigitalni I hope they handle road infrastructure better. I went to building Canberra at CMAG. Glenloch Interchange was contracted to American company who designed road for left-hand drive cars. Duh! They didn’t know we drove on right side of road. And when it was discovered, it was too costly to change. That’s why the Aranda turn-off is such a mess, you can’t go west from the interchange to west Belco, you can’t get onto Gungahlin Drive from William Hovell.

@luciedigitalni They do need to develop public transport there. It would be bliss to travel/walk in Indonesian cities without all the traffic. Good luck to them.

Seriously considering popping another 10mg of loratidine to make my nose stop dripping and my eyes stop feeling like they're being belt sanded with glass, but that would take me to 3 x the daily limit, not where I'm sitting right now at 2 x

    ugh allergies.

    juliew2010,
    @juliew2010@aus.social avatar

@KathyReid My doc said it’s ok to combine antihistamines. So maybe try something that isn’t Loratadine. I use Montelucast as a histamine blocker but it might be prescription only.

    juliew2010,

@luciedigitalni Haha! I know the feeling. When I arrived home after 8 weeks away, my dog looked at me, looked at the housesitters, back to me… I know said dog had quite a few scones and jam and cream, so had to seriously weigh up whether I was worth giving them up for.

Solidarity to all the parents whose first kid is starting school over the next/last week or two. Little miss 5 is starting prep tomorrow, and there’s a real excited/nervous energy in the house this afternoon.

@jpm I hope she has a great time!
I took the day off work to see my daughter to her first day of school. She rushed to the school gate, ‘bye mum’, went inside - and I was left standing there wondering what just happened. Then I went to work because obviously my baby girl was quite capable of starting school without me 😀

    On-water matters

The real adventure began today with a comfortable ferry ride to Koh Phi Phi for lunch, then a change of ferry on to Koh Lanta.

Unsurprisingly, Koh Phi Phi has developed a lot since I stayed a couple of nights here in January 2009, when it was still recovering from the Tsunami.

It's now so busy that getting the ferry into the pier was basically Tetris, and there were many dozens of speedboats and longtails coming and going and moored around the bay.

The first thing you see now, once you fight your way through the hordes to get off the pier, is a fucking Burger King, with a fucking McDonald's right behind it. Yuk.

It might be a bit more manageable in the evening, once all the daytrippers have left, but I found it pretty confronting and have removed it from my must-see recommendations list.

three longtail boats racing back to the beach at Koh Phi Phi Don
the bay at Koh Phi Phi Don with dozens of longtail boats pulled up on the beach and dozens more speedboats moored in the shallows
looking back over the wake of a ferry with the Thai flag pointing to the Koh Phi Phi islands

@luciedigitalni Selfish of me but I’m so glad I travelled so much when I was younger. I couldn’t stand the crowds at must-see spots now. I did go to Niagara Falls in 2019 but it was midwinter so me and maybe 5 others were there. And I did cry because it was so amazing to be there 😀

Bought the girls a couple of light aircraft as Christmas stocking stuffers. Just been out and having heaps of fun with them! Had to wait for the weather to clear up, mainly because we didn’t want to get wet going outside. Highly recommended, and so much cheaper than you think they should be. Grab a couple for your kids if you can afford them, or yourself if you don’t have kids.

    juliew2010,

@jpm I remember these. We had to slot the wings into the fuselage. We had a 2 storey house so our Christmas mornings were spent trying to bomb the dogs downstairs.
