look at what we got!

@mediaarchaeologylab@post.lurk.org avatar

it's very cute. but it doesn't totally work - lights come on but doesn't do anything else. sooo time to poke around

mediaarchaeologylab,
@mediaarchaeologylab@post.lurk.org avatar

the plastic is pretty crumbly and the covers on the conductive buttons are falling apart so that's gonna need a replacement. but we just love these old boards that are so clearly hand-made

Our final resident for the year, Shanice Martin, will be in town with us for the last week of June - and she has a pretty specific research interest that is not the particular specialty of anyone in the lab: subtitling/closed captioning and specifically fansubbing, more specifically early fansubbing.

If anyone has resources they can point us to, or would be willing to talk to Shanice once she is in the lab, please let us know!

so if anyone has a soon to be bricked Spotify Car Thing... we will happily take one to add to our shelf of "hardware that would continue to work just fine if it weren't for capitalism being capitalism" (we're still working on the name)

edit: thanks to @dgfitch and @Mabande for getting us to Corporolized Hardware, as in "enshittification in it's final stage a fossilized piece of corporate shit"
feels like we should tag @pluralistic in on this one 🌈

mediaarchaeologylab,
@mediaarchaeologylab@post.lurk.org avatar

@Crazypedia oh yeah Pebble stuff definitely has a place as well.

mediaarchaeologylab,
@mediaarchaeologylab@post.lurk.org avatar

@gahlord we've got a lytro and a decent variety of other bricked things. let us know if you're thinking of sending anything our way, we'll let you know if we already have it.

@apolaine @dgfitch @Mabande @pluralistic coprolites are fossilized shit. hence corporolized, shit fossilized by corporate enshittification.

@praxiscode per the edit, we settled on a name

@Geojoek there is a the chair from tiktok??

mediaarchaeologylab,
@mediaarchaeologylab@post.lurk.org avatar

@Geojoek pretty sure they are this one: https://www.amazon.com/PUKAMI-Armless-Office-Adjustable-Computer/dp/B0B8MNF259 , and they are pretty comfy! a little unstable if you try to sit too close to the front edge maybe? but, pretty good overall, especially for sitting crosslegged

mediaarchaeologylab,
@mediaarchaeologylab@post.lurk.org avatar

@Geojoek how funny! we just got them because they were pink! maybe that's why there was a limit on how many you can get at once...

mediaarchaeologylab,
@mediaarchaeologylab@post.lurk.org avatar

the great spruceify continues with another re-wire of the game area

mediaarchaeologylab,
@mediaarchaeologylab@post.lurk.org avatar

@loriemerson there was some cursing involved but we got there

there are very few things we will bend our "must be in working condition" rule for but... iykyk

mediaarchaeologylab,
@mediaarchaeologylab@post.lurk.org avatar

@jeremiah 😆 we will take some! can we make a genre request of "somehow tech related", to stay in keeping with the same limitation of our VHS collection?

mediaarchaeologylab,
@mediaarchaeologylab@post.lurk.org avatar

@jeremiah you can be loose with it (we include Legally Blonde in our VHS constraint because people always comment on the iBook, for example) but we agree, a constraint is almost always better than none

mediaarchaeologylab,
@mediaarchaeologylab@post.lurk.org avatar

so the LaserDisc player came with quite the eclectic collection of disks...

mediaarchaeologylab,
@mediaarchaeologylab@post.lurk.org avatar

@artandtechnic yeah that one jumped out as being especially unusual

mediaarchaeologylab,
@mediaarchaeologylab@post.lurk.org avatar

@misty lots of discovision discs! this is just a fraction of the whole stack

mediaarchaeologylab,
@mediaarchaeologylab@post.lurk.org avatar

@misty working on cataloging them! will share the full list when it's done

mediaarchaeologylab,
@mediaarchaeologylab@post.lurk.org avatar

@polpo wild right? maybe we should have a laserdisc watch party

mediaarchaeologylab,
@mediaarchaeologylab@post.lurk.org avatar

@misty here's all the discovision ones at least. we'll still share the whole list when we're done though
