Trump sleeping during his criminal trial was a smart legal defense maneuver as he commits fewer felonies while sleeping.

@MissingThePt I am not sure about that. He can do it even during sleep I guess

We've updated the rules of our flagship server mastodon.social today. Most are the same with some clarifications, but one rule is new: Content created by others must be attributed, and use of AI must be disclosed. Profiles that only post AI-generated content will not be tolerated.

Oh, today is my 8th anniversary of working on Mastodon. I was 23 when I started, finishing my last year of university, still living at my parent's place. I had no idea what I was getting myself into or that it would consume the next 8 years of my life almost completely.

Long night so far.

A call from my sister just after midnight that she’d taken mum to the hospital.

Been holding bedside vigil while sister goes home and gets some sleep. Doctors running tests and whatnot. Morphine for the pain. Machines that go “bing”.

It’s about 4:30am and mum’s snoring with a plethora of tubes and wires.

Eyes are heavy. Chair is uncomfortable. The nurses showed me where I could make a cup of coffee for myself.

Mastodon may not be as big as some other social networks. And it may not have as many celebrities & "influencers."

But it sure is a nice place to engage with curious, thoughtful & interesting folks in ways that I haven't experienced elsewhere online.

Rather than a chaotic circus, uniquely feels like a (mostly) friendly neighborhood.

: Ganges Chasma is one of several deep troughs that make up the Valles Marineris system on Mars. This image shows the geologic contact between the walls of Ganges Chasma and the adjacent plains. The upper slopes of the walls of Ganges have layering that appears dark, rough, and blocky, consistent with lava flows that are thought to make up the plains around Valles Marineris. Fascinating story about how the system predicted the impact of small (1m) asteroid 2024 BX1 on Earth, in Germany.

The asteroid was first observed less than three hours before its impact by Krisztián Sárneczky at Piszkéstető Mountain Station of the Konkoly Observatory near Budapest, Hungary.

  • Hitachi A-Train as a rolling stock option
  • explanation of problems with night trains to London

Oh no, a new eruption started at 7:57 UTC today in the Grindavík area in Iceland.

Things had been relatively quiet since the previous eruption on Dec 18, 2023.

This follows an intense series of earthquakes at the Sundhnúksgígar crater row that began around 03:00 UTC.

The map below shows the approx. location of the new fissure, whose southern edge is about 1 km from Grindavík.

The 2nd map shows the approx. location of the underground magma dyke from last month.

English astronomer, mathematician and physicist Edmond Halley died in 1741.

Halley is famous in his own right for analyzing the orbits of comets, which he showed to be elliptical and periodic. Halley's Comet returned, as he predicted, in 1758, 15 years after his death. Halley's discovery of stellar motion, though less well known than his comet, was no less an achievement. No longer were the stars believed fixed, either to an outer sphere or in space. via @aip
