I’m looking forward to a full day in my shop today. I want to design and produce 3 original sterling silver and gemstone pendants — or at least get them started for completion tomorrow. Yesterday I knocked out 3 pendants in my rollover bail style and nearly finished 8 pairs of my split bar dangle earrings. Photos of the finished items will come later this morning. I have less than 2 weeks at home to build inventory, get it online, and bring it to my wholesale customers.

Commendable.

It just seems like so much of it is bad news. Flooding, accidents, lost people, weather disasters.

His non disaster toots are interesting.

And you're welcome. I'm trying to show folks stuff they might not ever see. The world is big and some of us like to show off what we see of it.

Disappointed in the Science Museum requiring registration to get in. Even to the shop. I'm sick of the endless data collection by nearly everything these days.

At least a mailing list, probably for fund raising. But these days, I can imagine selling to data brokers, too.

Public US museums (like those connected to the Smithsonian) are free, too, but they have donation boxes in obvious places. Do yours have those? They're usually clear so you can see that others have thrown money in.

I visited an amazing camera shop today. If you're looking for used camera equipment sold in a small shop by someone who obviously loves and , call or visit Chuck in Hampton, VA. First photo shows his "museum" room. Seriously: this guy is super cool and has EVERYTHING.

What a poor way to use AI. Please don't do this, folks. Use it to help you curate, but don't try to make it seem like it's a human. It's a bad look, and anyone who's been using AI at all can tell it's AI-generated.

I was at my aunt’s house years ago, having dinner there. After dinner and we cleared the table and all the dishes were put in the dishwasher, we all sat back down at the table (as is the Italian custom.) My cousin took out a broom and started sweeping the floor. I asked, “Did we make such a mess?”

My aunt, who thought my mother never trained us right, replied indignantly, “Don’t you sweep your floor every night after dinner?“

“No,” I told her. “I have a dog.“

Fine, learned how to connect a natural gas dryer (yes, outgoing technology... but, still), and checked for leaks.

(Don't trust the contractors would do it correctly, and when I asked the plumber if he connects gas appliances he started bickering with me over my distrust of the not-trustworthy contractors, so I decided to do it myself).

Will have the gas company double check things (they do that as a free service) before turning it all on again.

mlanger,
@mlanger@mastodon.world avatar

@ai6yr

I’d rather have gas, although my glass-topped stove at home is so easy to clean.

mlanger,
@mlanger@mastodon.world avatar

@ai6yr

I don’t have a choice at home. There’s no gas at all in my neighborhood and there’s no way I’m going to invest in a gas system just to have a stove that might cook better.

Saturday surprise! My homeowners premium went from $743 last year to a renewal rate of $1300 this year. That's a 75% increase in ONE YEAR.

Keep in mind it was $416 back in 2018. So this new rate is a 213% increase in six years.

They tell me it's because there have been a lot of claims in my area. I've never had a claim.

I’M PAYING FOR MY INSURANCE, NOT SOMEONE ELSE’S.

I will go without insurance before I pay this.

@mlanger what kind of boats do you see on the ?

mlanger,
@mlanger@mastodon.world avatar

@alexstandiford

All kinds, but mine is among the smallest. Lots of trawlers and cabin cruisers in the 35-45 foot range. Fewer sailboats, mostly because masts need to be stepped for parts of the route.

Are you thinking of taking the family on this trip? If you homeschool, it would be amazing— it takes a year because of seasonal considerations. If you only have one or two kids, you could get away with a boat that has just two sleeping cabins. Maybe even under 40 feet.

alexstandiford, to random
@alexstandiford@fosstodon.org avatar

Well that didn’t go as planned lol. Turns out the blizzard that’s hitting Vermont this weekend decided to come a little early, so we had to scramble to get the camper packed today after making the drive from Ohio, then drive the rig to Albany through snow. We’ll finish this tomorrow, just glad to be parked away from the bulk of the snow.

mlanger,
@mlanger@mastodon.world avatar

@alexstandiford

I really have no right to talk about this. I am also in dire need of downsizing. But I also have a garage where I can store every single thing I own, including the boat I’m on if I bring it home. I don’t think too many people have that option. Still, I won’t keep that home forever so I’ll be looking at downsizing one of these days, too. It’s hard to let go sometimes. 🤷🏻‍♀️

mlanger,
@mlanger@mastodon.world avatar

@alexstandiford

I hear you on the big rigs. I had a 36ft fifth wheel with four slides. It was crazy comfortable when I traveled, but it was also a pain in the butt to get into the places I needed to get into. So I downsized to a slide-in truck camper. That’s possible because it’s just me, but it certainly wouldn’t work for a family.

mlanger,
@mlanger@mastodon.world avatar

@alexstandiford

Have you considered a tent for your kids? My family had a 22ft Prowler when I was growing up and my sister and I slept in a tent on cots when it was parked long term.

Also, a screened in room that attaches to the trailer’s awning can really increase the size of your living space, especially if it has drop-down sides for foul weather. I spent the summer in a horse trailer with living quarters and that screened room was a real lifesaver.

mlanger,
@mlanger@mastodon.world avatar

@alexstandiford

Oh, heck, stay away from campgrounds, especially on weekends and “in season.”

If you’re not full timing anymore and have a regular home to live in, there’s really no reason not to downsize. Fix up a smaller rig for off the grid operations and go exploring with the family when you have time off. With the right rig — propane stove, hot water, and fridge — and some solar panels, you can REALLY CAMP anywhere. BLM and NFS offer tons of free options.

mlanger,
@mlanger@mastodon.world avatar

@alexstandiford

I know next to nothing about kids; I never had any. But I do remember when I was a kid, back in the early 1970s. We did go to campgrounds, but the things I remember most were learning how to catch crabs with a string and a chicken bone and a net — which I STILL DO to catch crabs while cruising — skimming stones on ponds, and playing flashlight tag with other kids in open fields. I don’t remember being shoehorned into a parking lot with kid-friendly “amenities.”🤷🏻‍♀️

mlanger,
@mlanger@mastodon.world avatar

@alexstandiford

Again, I never had kids and really am not qualified to advise on them. But I sure hope that if your kids are the right age, you take the opportunity to instill in them a love for nature and the environment. Our family vacations were a mix of that and history; I can’t tell you how many colonial mansions we visited on family vacations when I was a kid.🤣
