Hey folks! I am a nerd all about tech, linux, board games, video games, and weird medical knowledge. I worked in DevOps for a while, but now I'm very happily on a red team.

In perhaps my least savvy business deal yet, I bid on and won the Christmas tree my wife made and donated to the auction. It’s for a good cause and her tree is amazing.

How many of you are "burn a CD old"? 🤔

nerdwoman,

@nixCraft I’m not just “burn a cd” old, I’m “made a mix tape on tape” old.

Just a reminder that private American citizens can now sponsor refugees for resettlement:

https://welcomecorps.org/resources/faqs/

Not everyone has the means, but if you do, it might be worth thinking about.

nerdwoman,
@nerdwoman@infosec.exchange avatar

@ZachWeinersmith I don’t currently have the time/energy, but I wish there was an easier way to financially contribute to this sort of thing. Right now it seems you have to know a private group (who has the time I do not) that’s raising money for this specific cause. ☹️

how does this site still not have quote tweeting

nerdwoman,
@nerdwoman@infosec.exchange avatar

@christianselig I would really appreciate a way to block tags/words/phrases, because apparently either Mastodon or the app I’m using won’t do it. And there’s some garbage I’d really like to see less of.

Larry Lessig should really stop speaking to the press. He routinely says things as bafflingly ridiculous as this. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/10/09/they-studied-dishonesty-was-their-work-a-lie “Trust me” is one of the biggest red flags you can ever utter.

nerdwoman,
@nerdwoman@infosec.exchange avatar

@glennf Between grants and government funding lies a lot of researchers who can’t afford any other software than what is provided. Hell, some of them barely afford ramen. Academia is also an oddball for IT, with extremely forward-thinking researchers who will absolutely not update anything else they do. Changing a website results in lots of angry calls. It’s kind of insane.

Pixel Pals 2.0.6 is now available with a fully transparent widgets option 🫥 (as well as lots of other background customization 🥳)

Transparent home screen widgets are really fun, can show just about anything too. Weather, storage, battery, calendar, time, date, quotes

iPhone home screen video where you can see a device stats widget with a transparent background (the background is a red sky, Japanese-style landscape) and then a weather widget is configured with a transparent background

nerdwoman,
@nerdwoman@infosec.exchange avatar

@christianselig And 2.0.5 fixed Apollo AND a few other tiny bugs I noticed. You’re just super busy over there, nice work!

my perpetual advice to new university students: go the fuck to class and go the fuck to bed. almost all student crises stem from not doing those two things

@malwaretech I have one, it’s my favorite piece of furniture for any sitting <4ish hours. Any longer than that and it becomes a radiator, though. Which still bums me out.

This year consider not “migrating” settings and apps to your new phone. Weird ghosts in the machine you have no ability to inspect can be in the configuration files. I had a mail syncing bug move between three iPhones where I had to sometimes exit and enter a mailbox for refresh.

nerdwoman,
@nerdwoman@infosec.exchange avatar

@SwiftOnSecurity I had a jailbroken iPhone way back when, with the battery percentage in the task bar. When they finally added the setting years (and many unjailbroken phones) later, I couldn’t disable it because it was STILL in the settings somehow. It finally fixed sometime in the last couple of years.

Why doesn't Apple make a TV? They would own that space. Half the people I know would happily buy one, if it meant no spyware, user choice, and never buying another "smart" TV again. Even if the cost was 2x normal smart tv.

nerdwoman,
@nerdwoman@infosec.exchange avatar

@briankrebs I hate that my options are ads and spyware on the TV, or (if I don’t plug it in to the net at all), ads and spyware on whatever other set top box I use - in our house, mostly the PS5. There is no “good option,” and no matter what you choose, half of your apps aren’t available in any one place. Enshittification indeed.

I'm so confused when people try to get me to invest in their generative AI company. Like, the entire concept of generative AI does not work on the most basic fundamental level. The whole appeal is that it's cheaper than paying an actual human to do it. But, to even be mediocre at any given task the model must be train on millions of data points from people who are actually good at said task. It works (temporarily) because the internet has been free and open for all of its existence, providing these companies with infinite training data at zero cost. But why would researchers and creators continue publishing their work on the open internet under a licensing model that allows someone else to profit while directly undermining their career? ChatGPT has already started to degrade as a result of being given internet access. What do we think happens when all the high quality data points start getting paywalled or licensed out of reach?

nerdwoman,
@nerdwoman@infosec.exchange avatar

@malwaretech I am old enough to remember grandmothers terrified of being financially ruined by the lawyers of RIAA for downloading two songs. And these days they keep going after the internet archive for everything they can, even if it’s media that has been out of print for decades. But it’s cool and clever to build a business off of everything written ever?

Reposting via @lippard w/ more context. Verizon says more than 80 percent of email-to-text messages are identified as spam.

Even so, Verizon doesn't block this functionality by default. Instead, you have to text "OFF" to the short number 4040 to turn off email-to-text.

Any Verizon users worried about stalkers or crazies should definitely text this number OFF.

https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2023/08/29/2733444/0/en/Verizon-protects-customers-at-home-on-the-go-and-everywhere-in-between.html

nerdwoman,
@nerdwoman@infosec.exchange avatar

@briankrebs @lippard The only reasons I have it on are 1) We haven’t gotten too much spam (yet?) 2) We use the gateway to send emails from cron jobs at our house - particularly monitoring the fish tank temperature. Our entire local IoT is home brewed with tasmota, so that’s our only obvious way to get notified if something goes awry.

I released the final update to Apollo for Reddit! 🥹 It tidies up things for the closure later today, adds some really cool easter eggs, and lets you migrate your pixel pals from Apollo to the separate Pixel Pals app, which also unlocks an Apollo Pixel Pal so he can live on ❤️

nerdwoman,
@nerdwoman@infosec.exchange avatar

@christianselig You’ve done so much hard work to help close everything off and I really appreciate it. I look forward to your next shiny app project. 😁

I just released a really important Apollo update that adds the ability for users with remaining subscription time left to decline an automatic refund. Devs pay refunds out of pocket, and this will be about $250K, so I thank you for your consideration. ❤️

Also, this update includes an amazing "Goodbye Apollo Wallpaper Set” for your phone, tablet, or desktop, created by outrageously talented Apollo icon designers. You can unlock the pack with a donation that helps with refund costs. 🙂

nerdwoman,
@nerdwoman@infosec.exchange avatar

@christianselig Is there a good way to get back to the wallpapers? I didn’t download all of them at once and now I can’t find them again. :(

christianselig, to random
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

I have a fun idea to commission some of the artists who did Apollo icons to create some really cool final Apollo wallpapers to remember the app by. Is this something you'd pay a few bucks for, where the proceeds would go toward Apollo's refund fees?

nerdwoman,
@nerdwoman@infosec.exchange avatar

@christianselig I might go for wallpapers? I’ve found myself wishing there was a sticker pack with a larger selection of icons than currently on the store. I need to put stickers on everything!
