profdc9,

The good news is that there’s going to be a riveting Netflix documentary about it,

profdc9,

When the primary medium of negotiation is of prisoner exchanges, I suppose you can expect humans to become currency.

profdc9,

Ah, the old chestnut of causing a problem, and then blaming it on someone else. Republican leadership is a Jonestown suicide cult, and they want all of us to drink the kool-aid.

profdc9,

Yeah, he was crossing his fingers behind his back. Like every other time when he opens his mouth.

profdc9,

It’s a wonder how Outlook and Exchange Server are used by most companies, many of which have sensitive confidential and proprietary data. Choosing Microsoft is all about having someone to blame for your security problems, not achieving secure communications and storage.

profdc9,

Wait! I thought free market competition was supposed to ensure the consumer gets the best value for the lowest price. Don’t tell me that the free market isn’t working?

profdc9,

What is an ultra-processed food? There needs to be some definition that is unambiguously applicable, otherwise this kind of study is worthless.

profdc9,

Infrared multispectral imaging would be interesting to see what is under the surface, if there are any pentimentos underneath.

profdc9,

It’s probably more realpolitik on the part of Xi. He has big problems at home, and probably doesn’t want to multiply his problems.

profdc9,

This is the behavior the maximizes short-term shareholder value, not building a long-term profitable, innovative enterprise. When some other company temporarily discovers a money spigot like Google did, there might be a brief resurgence of such an environment, but generally no one values or wants to protect innovation, as dollars are easily quantifiable and future potential is subjective. This is why 99% of the time people keep their head down and collect their paychecks.

profdc9,

Wenn ist das Nunstück git und Slotermeyer? Ja! Beiherhund das Oder die Flipperwaldt gersput!

profdc9,

Never thought that Russia would become the Republic of Gilead, but I suppose they want to excel at something.

profdc9,

Aren’t cross-trade strikes a consequence of union solidarity? I think large federated unions in other countries engage is similar protests.

profdc9,

The fact that Trump presents such a threat to the world after four disasterous years as President, after attempting to tamper with the electoral college votes, voting machines, after publicly professing his admiration for criminals and despots, because of an elections and politicians that can be overtly bought because the Supreme Court, which itself has been corrupted by bribes and influence allows it to be, may just well bring down the Republic. We are at the point where wrapping oneself in the flag and spewing fascist screeds is considered patriotic, whereas preserving the Enlightenment principles on which the Republic was founded is considered dangerous and subversive. Even if Trump died today, another strongman, probably less stupid than Trump, would take his place, and likely succeed in destroying the Republic. The founders of this country could never have imagined the effects of hate-filled mass media on a population when their main means of information dissemination required imprinting and transporting paper.

profdc9,

This is the point Humphrey Bogart is waving goodbye to Ingrid Bergman. We’re in Vichy territory now.

profdc9,

Approximately 735 kilomice per fathombushel.

profdc9,

Evolution has never stopped. Humans are simply creating new selection pressures. Humans are cruel to each other so that some will kill themselves. This will remain the case until cooperation becomes a dominant survival strategy.

A lot of societies problems would be solved if they taught about forming healthy relationships in school.

Right now there is a loneliness epidemic throughout the world. More and more people aren’t entering relationships. Gen Z men are having significant trouble dating while there are some economic factors in the mix. From my own view and experiences combined with what I’ve read most Gen Z men are lack the social and...

The republicans are not really governing: they are pandering. There’s no way such a measure could become law with the Democratic majority in the Senate. Even if such a measure became law, the Supreme Court would have to completely redefine due process for this to remain law, however, the Supreme Court did decide in favor of internment camps for Japanese American citizens, so I supposed this can not be ruled out.

profdc9,

The problem is that the Palestinians are stuck in Gaza because no one really cares about them. The Palestinians are more convenient as pawns to use in a proxy war against Israel (for example by Iran and Syria) than to actually achieve a permanent, stable arrangement. For Netanyahu, achieving a settlement alienates his base which wants to expel the Palestinians completely, and the conflict maintains anxiety that keeps him elected.

profdc9,

The House is going to shut down the government and default on the debt.

The most terrifying words ever said are “I’m Republican and I’m here to help.”

profdc9,

Looks like we might have a sequel to American Graffiti soon.

profdc9,

Back in the last millennium, before the days of the internet, we had to learn to program from these things called books. There was no Stack Overflow or ChatGPT to ask questions. If you were lucky, there was “man” pages. I’ll see myself out to the nursing home now.

profdc9,

Capitalism is the system of winners! And winners make the money and write the rules! And you can’t cheat if you write the rules!

profdc9,

John Fetterman shows the integrity of John Fetterman. I am sure many of his caucus are nervous about maintaining a majority.

profdc9,

Maybe breaking away from the hive mind and eating fewer tide pods would be good for the public.

Was Matt Gaetz's power move a smart one? (www.newsweek.com)

Representative Matt Gaetz pulled off one of the biggest power moves in modern U.S. politics when he successfully led the effort to oust Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House this week, and experts weighed in with Newsweek about whether (or not) they think it was a good idea....

profdc9,

The Republicans don’t govern; they engage in political theater. He is taking this to a further extreme.

profdc9,

The police need crimes and criminals to justify their existence. If the criminals are selected by a computer program, that is sufficient for their purposes.

profdc9,

Now use a 104 year old parachute, and you’ll really have a record.

profdc9,

Will the LLMs be useful for dating?

profdc9,

It’s grim to think the driver for renewable energy will be the demand for endless AI synthesized child porn.

profdc9,

A country that is already fighting a war on its home turf is going to find it very hard to find the human and financial resources to build a large domestic arms industry. They probably will not prevail unless they receive foreign aid, both financial and military.

profdc9,

The problem is that politics do not stop at the border. Support for Ukraine has become yet another culture war, us-vs-them battleground. It doesn’t really matter what the issues are anymore, only that there has to be conflict over them to keep attention whores in the news cycle.

profdc9,

“Political satire became obsolete when Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.” - Tom Lehrer

profdc9,

The problem is that you should show Trump a forest and explain forest fires to him, and he would think he’s smarter. His head is too far up his ass to think about anything that doesn’t please him or feed his ego.

profdc9,

Having lots of options for chicken sandwiches doesn’t seem to be a problem with capitalism, and one could always decline to eat a chicken sandwich, or make your own. Wealth inequality and special interests controlling the government are much more of a problem.

profdc9,

I’m just sayin… maybe Poland’s rhetoric about Ukraine lately has more to do with distracting the electorate from the Law and Justice party Cash for Visas scandal. It doesn’t seem in Poland’s interest to let a neighbor like Ukraine be compromised by the greatest strategic threat to Poland, and they and the Baltic states have the most to lose if Russia gets a further foothold in Eastern Europe. Domestic politics needs to stop at the border.

The Man Amazon Erased (www.tabletmag.com)

Jackson soon discovered that Amazon suspended his account because a Black delivery driver who’d come to his house the previous day had reported hearing racist remarks from his video doorbell. In a brief email sent to Jackson at 3 a.m., the company explained how it unilaterally placed all of his linked devices and services on...

profdc9,

Racist Doorbell is the name of my new surf/punk band.

profdc9,

I can’t help thinking that a decision of this destructive magnitude would probably trigger nuking the filibuster and trigger packing the court. It would destroy the separation of powers in the government.

profdc9,

Crypto and AI have rewritten the book on the laws of physics. Now you can defy gravity with AI!

profdc9,

Maybe the Democratic party needs to vet their nominees better. Otherwise it’s not going to be a political party anymore, just a name to exploit.

profdc9,

Exactly this. He’s not a political theorist, he’s a mobster.

profdc9,

I think Max Tegmark is like other public intellectuals, for example, Michio Kaku, that have to say something controversial periodically to stay in he news and maintain their reputation.

profdc9,

He should have let himself be fired. Then he could have brought a lawsuit against the school district over the matter. The school district would have had to demonstrate their reason to fire him on the record. If the researcher received damages for wrongful termination, the taxpayers would know it’s their money that is being frivolously spent to support someone’s homophobic agenda.

profdc9,

To be fair, Krusty the Clown and Homer Simpson are body doubles. Maybe there’s a cynical clown version of John Fetterman somewhere.
