“Mommy help me. I’m scared.” She ran into the kitchen then to the mud room wanting to leave the house in a panic. It was the beeping sound of the fire alarm in the basement signaling that the battery was expiring. She heard it before we humans did!

@StillIRise1963 I mean, we're also taught to hate ourselves, so it probably doesn't seem as strange to too many as it should.

People on Twitter are debating whether a person using uncommon words like "delve" are trying to sound smarter than they are, or worse, are ChatGPT bots, because "normal" people don't talk like that.

You don't have to get upset, or embroiled in the debate. Not worth the time or attention. But I'll share some important context as your friendly neighborhood Nigerian 🙋🏿‍♂️

Many Nigerians have bigger English language vocabularies and better command of grammar than the typical American or English person

queenofnewyork,
@queenofnewyork@newsie.social avatar

@purplepadma @mekkaokereke @mentallyalex Maybe if you’re into fantasy with dwarves, who do a lot of delving? I dunno, it’s not unusual to me at all, a USian who reads a lot. Though admittedly I read a fair bit of British fiction, so maybe that’s why it doesn’t trip me up at all.

I am still getting hate mail for my blog post, this time from a neighbor. She was so angry it took her a few days to calm down enough to write to me (in all caps!)

(I shut down comments yesterday)

When I wrote analysis for the Washington Post, I sometimes got angry email from MAGA people.

I did get a memorable letter from a librarian in Tennessee who was enraged at how I portrayed Andrew Jackson in one of my books.

But this has never happened.

I think it's interesting.

queenofnewyork,

@Teri_Kanefield Sounds like she’s feeling called out and not liking it!

queenofnewyork,
@queenofnewyork@newsie.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield It surprises me to a large extent because I do not like the rage machine. I disconnect semi-regularly from the news because I cannot handle it. I guess we’re all wired differently!

queenofnewyork,
@queenofnewyork@newsie.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield That is such a foreign concept to me. I guess maybe there’s some pleasure in feeling part of the group, but as someone who’s felt like an outsider most of the time, it doesn’t attract me. Though I do enjoy some of the late night hosts dunking on various people, I guess. But I recognize they’re also entertainers, where their goal is to get a laugh, but also not delve into nuance. If I want actual info, I don’t go to entertainers. And I like info! :)

Here is the appellate court's denial of Trump's claim of immunity:
https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.cadc.40415/gov.uscourts.cadc.40415.1208593677.0.pdf

The decision opens by summarizing the allegations in the indictment, being careful to add that guilt hasn't yet been determined.

The court then dismisses the idea that they don't have jurisdiction over the issue and concludes that it does.

Then, on to immunity. The court rejects Trump's "separation of powers" argument, saying this:

That's strong language.

@Teri_Kanefield That’s a big part of why I don’t watch the “news” like that. I read several sites to keep on top of local and world news, but I don’t want ratings to control what I feel about those events.

🤡There's a non-zero percent of the US population that genuinely believes that The NFL, Joe Biden, "The Pentagon" and Taylor Swift, conspired to create a fake relationship and rig the NFL playoffs, so that Taylor Swift could pop out in the middle of the Superbowl halftime show and say "Vote for Biden!"

I wish I was kidding.

Like, not a small percentage either.

queenofnewyork,
@queenofnewyork@newsie.social avatar

@mekkaokereke "Travis Kelce's net worth is closer to a homeless person, than it is to Taylor Swift's." Geeeeeez!

I don't really care for Taylor Swift or American football, so seeing this play out just makes me wonder why people care so much either way. But I did leave most of my fangirlish tendencies by the roadside some time ago, except maybe for Ewan-Obiwan, so could just be that I'm too cynical.

I don’t like being that person, but if you can’t travel by air without disturbing other people with your noise, don’t travel by air. I know not all other alternatives are good, and staying home may be lonely, but the level of entitlement here is just extreme. And the “I could have murdered her” comment is just gross.

The fact that employers are blatantly lying about positions being remote is unsurprising and sad.

queenofnewyork,
@queenofnewyork@newsie.social avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi That’s just so stupid. Our COO was anti-remote when he first started, but he changed his tune seeing how we all worked during covid. Now we hire from all over the country. A broader applicant pool is great. And applicants have definitely caught on, because they all ask “How remote is this position really?” And are then relieved to learn my team spans the country.

Sales of coffee are going down — in America, at least — and earlier this month, TODAY declared going decaf to be "the new sober." Salon's Mary Elizabeth Williams talked to experts about how harmful caffeine really is, sneaky sources of it, and techniques for cutting down your intake. Are you trying to reduce your caffeine consumption in 2024?

(This one, if you missed it.) https://terikanefield.com/section-3-and-the-spirit-of-liberty/

First, I'll share a positive response. (Screenshot #1)

(Screenshot #2 was typical of the angry responses.)

About 5 years ago, I took the tact of responding to "there are never any consequences" by listing the consequences.

I figured, you know, facts. For example, see #3

If it helps, I was one of those people initially, and you have persuaded me off the rage machine. Facts do matter to me. And seeing the consequences piling up for sure helps. While you can’t convince everybody, that doesn’t mean you are wasting your time.

Don't learn , they say. It's a dead language, they say. There are no jobs, they add. Learn instead. It's much better. Jobs are plentiful.

I don't know if it's because of this or some other reason, but we have had great success with finding PHP developers and have had an awful time trying to find JS developers. Not that we don't get applicants, but when you get to the interviews, it's like ... not good.

So go ahead and learn PHP.

queenofnewyork,
@queenofnewyork@newsie.social avatar

@mjgardner @gizmomathboy It kind of amuses me that almost all the devs I interviewed say the thing they don’t like most about JavaScript is it being loosely typed. Like, why are you working with the language if you don’t like that fundamental aspect of it? Yes, there’s Typescript, but my loose-type-loving self thinks it’s a solution for a problem I don’t have. I still typically advance them in the process, but I get more excited when I get a unique answer.

For some a position of power and prominence insulates them from criticism, for others it's a magnifying glass.

How do each of us contribute to this pattern?

Why not burn Nixon alive instead of pardoning him, for example?

queenofnewyork,
@queenofnewyork@newsie.social avatar

@futurebird Also I will maintain Nixon was pardoned because he could have taken down most of the GOP leadership. And that set a bad example of not punishing people and “we should move on so we can heal” BS in the political sphere, especially from the GOP. One of the many things I’d change if I had a time machine. :)

queenofnewyork,

After watching Rebel Moon, my respect for George Lucas as a writer and world builder doubled. Maybe tripled.

I'm pretty sure that it's illegal to take that much acting talent and VFX budget, and produce waves hands in exasperation that with it. A crime against my eyeballs. Don't get me wrong, the visuals were pretty, and you could see the actors doing their best to try to make something happen... But no.

Now I need to go rewatch Rogue One and Andor, just to rinse that mess from my mind.
