Anybody else feeling it? Mastodon becoming essential...?

Mastodon is tiny, yet are we now seeing the vital niche that this nascent open social media platform is beginning to fill?

Today the AoIR, Association of Internet Researchers @AoIR abandons Twitter for Mastodon (https://aoir.org/aoir2023onmastodon/), and EU Commission Vice President Vera Jourova declares Twitter the largest source of and (https://mastodon.ie/@EugeneMcParland/111132449403615794)...

People are turning to Mastodon...

"The courts today talk of protesters breaching the ‘social contract’, require that they act with ‘proportion’, and that they express genuine remorse. But if you speak to anyone on the more radical edges of the environmental movement, they will say that they are fulfilling the social contract by highlighting – in a non-violent way – the imminent threat of environmental destruction"

How can one 'show remorse' for trying to save the planet?

Smartphones and other devices that could be used to take photos are strictly banned at Icelandic public swimming pools. There are signs about it everywhere.

And yes, this is strictly enforced. 👈

Today at the pool a person took their smartphone with them out of a changing room and onto the common pool area. 👀

Within 30s a member of the pool staff was with them, politely but firmly explaining that no, they don't get to use their smartphone at the pool.

Within 2min the device was in a locker. 👍

@rysiek what if a phone is a medical device? For me currently for my sugar levels to be displayed on my watch requires for my phone to be within bluetooth range of me. While having watch display them directly is possible, it requires a much more expensive watch.

As I said I already had prepped some stuff it falls to me to actually run the first game, and I decided to use Silver Angel as the first adventure, because, well, it basically is the first Shadowrun adventure FASA published and when I prepped I prepped for a game set in Seattle in the 2050s.

If "Mastodon" idiomatically refers to the federated collection of Mastodon servers (as in "I posted it to -"), and "the Fediverse" refers to the entire Activity Pub world, including not just Mastodon, but also Mastodon-alikes like Firefish and Pleroma, and other things like kbin and Lemmy and Peertube and Funkwhale and Pixelfed and Bookwyrm...

What's the right term to specify "Mastodon and the Mastodon-alikes", the AP federated Twitter-inspired microblogging network that is collectively the distributed Twitter substitute people mean when they say "Mastodon", but which is not just, technically, Mastodon servers?

Is there a good term for this part of the network? Less than the whole thing, but bigger than just the servers running actual Mastodon?

(Or do Pleroma and Firefish describe the service they provide "Mastodon"?)

@u_tamtam @pezhore It's not like XMPP doesn't have issues. Finding a combination of clients and servers to get a coverage of the XEPs you want is quite an exercise. MUCs are painful, especially if you want to join from multiple clients. Cross-device trust between accounts for E2EE AFAIK still requires each device to trust all the other devices manually. Matrix has many more multimedia features.

viq,
@viq@hackerspace.pl avatar

@pezhore @u_tamtam Your question may require a bit of specifying. Discord is a product and a platform. XMPP and Matrix are protocols. So, uh, it's a bit like asking whether there are any SMTP or IMAP alternatives to Google Groups? There are many servers and clients and supporting bots and libraries that do many things. What specific things are you interested in, to narrow it down somewhat?

viq,
@viq@hackerspace.pl avatar

@pezhore The confusion is somewhat warranted, since matrix.org is the main/largest instance of Matrix the protocol, using Synapse the server, and having web access via Element the client.
For just text chat, anything will do. Matrix has the bonus of having a liberachat gateway, though it's had issues recently.
But, the experience is somewhat different. [1/n]

viq,
@viq@hackerspace.pl avatar

@pezhore XMPP and IRC (to my knowledge, which very well may be outdated) are quite similar - you join a room from a client, you get a nickname, maybe a few lines of history, you chat, you close your client or lose connectivity, you don't know anymore what's happening there. You want to join from another client, that's a separate session, with a different presence and name on the channel. Your clients don't share history etc. [2/n]

viq,
@viq@hackerspace.pl avatar

@pezhore With Matrix, depending a bit on channel settings, your account joins the room and gets either all history or starting from the point of joining. And your account is in the channel. Regardless of what clients you use, and how many of them you use, and whether they're online at the time or not, it's your server keeping track of what's going on in the channel, and keeping history of it, so you have one presence and same view regardless of type and count and connectivity of clients. [3/3]

viq,
@viq@hackerspace.pl avatar

@Pinklink @kibiz0r and in the meantime, cryptocurrencies have power usage comparable to whole countries to do what they do (which is not terribly much).

That's risky, because the way you say it, I can check how you voted on things, and come have a serious discussion about your choices.
Much more interesting are technologies that allow to prove something, without divulging the details.

@alyaza @Poggervania @ComradeKhoumrag @GunnarRunnar

viq,
@viq@hackerspace.pl avatar

@cassetti @alyaza @Poggervania @ComradeKhoumrag @GunnarRunnar if you use a unique identifier more than once, there's possibility to correlate information and tie to a person. Even once you could use timestamps and other information to tie it to a person.

And, in relation to government, there isn't much benefit to using blockchain that couldn't be solved using other technologies.
