yenahmik,

My favorite from my time working in the news industry:

Neighbor puts toilets in their yard facing other neighbors house. That neighbor builds a fence so they don’t have to look at the toilets. Original neighbor then hangs toilets from the tree so it is visible over the fence. Cue complaints to get toilets removed by city/county.

I believe the original dispute had to do with tearing out a shared bush and parking on lawn, but I don’t recall the details.

yenahmik,

I just finished watching The Bear. I absolutely loved it, though there is certainly a lot of yelling in that show.

yenahmik,

I didn’t have very high expectations of it going in, but I was absolutely blown away. It deserves all the acclaim it’s received.

yenahmik,

Oh fun. $330k for a 500sqft shack that is partially collapsed. The only info on the listing states the lot will need to be scraped, so basically that is the cost of an empty lot.

Going out a bit further, you can find a couple of houses around $350k that are liveable. They are 700-900 sqft and 0-2 bedrooms.

yenahmik,

A while back I applied with the USPS and got called in for an interview. It wasn’t a real interview, but more of a presentation on all the required next steps to be hired (there were at least 20 of us in the room). I ended up getting a different job before my start date, but if you were able to do all the steps by the deadline the job was yours.

yenahmik,

It’s just lovely when a c-level exec makes delivery promises to a customer without consulting with the development team. Now we have to somehow complete a very complex feature across multiple teams in 1 month.

At least I’m that much closer to RE with today’s ridiculous market gains.

yenahmik,

Nice! I’m still waiting on a couple of forms from my spouse before they will be completed. Getting married has really messed up our numbers. The first year we owed somewhere around $5000. The last couple of years we got back that amount instead. I miss the days of filing single and getting within a couple hundred dollars of the right number.

yenahmik,

That is the example that OP referred to in their question

Do you all have any tips on activities to do yourself, instead of consuming content all the time?

I’m pretty sick of my content addiction, like watching youtube or netflix all the time. I would rather be spending my time otherwise so figured fun things are the best to start. Do you have tips for fun things to do? Or how I could search for them?...

yenahmik,

Go for daily walks in nature.

Do yoga

Play a recreational sport that interests you

Read (I guess that’s still consumption)

Write

Volunteer for a cause you care about

yenahmik,

Assuming you’re mostly in a broad US market fund, the numbers should look pretty nice from a year ago.

yenahmik,

In this week’s edition of celebrating random milestones:

It took me roughly 10 months to earn last years gross salary in portfolio gains. Glad to see my portfolio earns more than I do, especially since it doesn’t have to pay taxes on that income.

yenahmik,

NGL - this is one reason I am on the fence about having kids.

yenahmik,

Wow. That sounds like terrible management. If you don’t know what your employees are doing for an entire year, you are failing at your job as a manager.

Glad to hear you got out.

yenahmik,

I just update my house value once a year with a close approximation to what Zillow says is the value. So if Zillow shows my house is estimated at $515000, then I will input that it’s $500000 in my spreadsheet for this year.

It may go up or down throughout the year, but since I have no plans to sell I don’t really care about the noise.

How to meet people +40yo

I’m 41F. I was married but separated 8 years ago. I was still young but was very traumatized and never really wanted another relationship. Lately I’ve been feeling a little lonely and would like to meet some new people but I moved and don’t have many friends here and the ones I have are younger and do younger people things...

yenahmik,

This is pretty niche, but I’m in a casual curling league and nearly everyone is over 40. Everyone there is super welcoming and friendly.

yenahmik,

Got my performance evaluation back from work and received “outstanding”. Last year, that meant I ended up getting a much higher than expected bonus. Given the company has indicated they don’t have much funding for the bonus pool this year, and they haven’t been giving raises the past few years, I’m curious how my review will relate to compensation adjustments this year.

yenahmik,

I wonder if finding a good tax advisor runs into the same problem as finding a financial advisor - in order to know if they are worth the money, you have to know enough that just doing it yourself would make more sense.

While I’ve never used one, my sibling was given very bad information by her new husband’s tax advisor when they were doing taxes last year.

yenahmik,

In other good news this week:

After maximizing the anticipation with incremental gains this week, I finally crossed the $500k mark in invested funds!

Here’s to hoping the market can hang on until the end of the month, so I can memorialize this milestone in my spreadsheet.

yenahmik,

Asking where you are from is pretty normal conversation, especially if you have a noticeable accent. Asking where your parents/grandparents/etc are from is less common. Are you by chance not-white? Sometimes these sorts of questions have a race element to them

yenahmik,

I’m a big fan of the Kroger butter chicken sauce. It’s gotten pretty expensive so I don’t buy it as often as I used to, but I think it’s super tasty. I usually throw it together with some mixed frozen vegetables and rotisserie chicken served over rice. It basically takes as long to cook as it takes the rice cooker to finish the rice.
