    A reminder that a core strategy of the Republican Party is to deny eligible voters the right to vote, or to have their vote counted if they do manage to cast ballots.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/03/us/politics/trump-voter-rolls.html

    (This is mostly excellent journalism in a major outlet about a crucial political issue, and it's in the NY Times, both of which are surprising if gratifying.) https://1ft.io/proxy?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2024%2F03%2F03%2Fus%2Fpolitics%2Ftrump-voter-rolls.html

    Note: The story credulously quotes liars without saying they're lying.)

    Why is there a concept of “eligible voters”? Shouldn’t all citizens be eligible to vote?

    When was the last time you had to write a resume/C.V.?

    zachariah,
    @zachariah@mas.to avatar

    @glennf

    I started writing mine 1½ years ago when I left my careers as a middle school classroom teacher.

    It took me about three months to get it to where I thought it was fit for the public. I have a ton of IT experience, but hadn’t been employed in IT in a long time, so I had to deemphasize teaching and emphasize technology troubleshooting skills.

    I then spent six months revising it weekly to get increasing responses and interviews. I finally got hired after Thanksgiving.

    I own a #SurfacePro 7 and a #SurfaceGo. Both don't support #Windows11 and therefore will be trash in October 2025 if you ask Microsoft.

    Anybody has tried #ArchLinux or any other #Linux distro on these devices? What hardware is supported and which isn't (I can go w/o the touch screen, but Wifi/Bluetooth/Touchpad/etc should be usable)?

    My Acer Aspire One 722 from around 2012 runs current #Arch just fine...

    I’d like to see everyone move to Linux as fast as possible, but if you’re willing to go through the hurdles of getting a new OS, you should know you can bypass the requirements for Windows 11 if you want to keep using Windows on your computer: https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/bypass-windows-11-tpm-requirement

    Do your children or goods inheritors a huge favor. Recycle, shred, and otherwise sort all your old paperwork. My mother-in-law, rest her soul, retained seemingly every piece of paper across 50+ years of her personal and professional life. I can see why: most of it was useful for a few months to even a decade later. But then 100% pointless for her or anyone else. There's a huge effort to go in and process that…so she didn't. Now her children have put in ~100s of hours in processing it.

    zachariah,
    @zachariah@mas.to avatar

    @glennf

    An automatic-feeding document scanner helps if you’re worried you’ll want the info someday. Then you can shred with confidence. It’s much easier for heirs to just delete the folder if they don’t find value in it when you’re gone, and it’s easier for them to keep if they want it just-in-case.

    With computers, I sort of wonder whether we’d be better off with a world where the actual technology was modular, but the enclosure was not, giving us added flexibility.

    I’m typing on a six-year-old computer with a 4K monitor. The monitor is fine. The keyboard is fine. The trackpad is not as nice as it could be, but the computer itself is a little on the older side now and will struggle to keep up with high-end stuff.

    Spiral galaxies like our Milky Way are mysteriously hard to come by in our cosmic backyard. Why that is has remained a mystery, but a team of astronomers think they’ve finally figured it out. Live Science explains: https://flip.it/ok7W7r

    zachariah,
    @zachariah@mas.to avatar

    @ScienceDesk

    “In their simulation, the researchers saw that the spiral galaxies in the dense clusters of the Supergalactic Plane frequently smashed into each other in catastrophic collisions — shattering their delicate arms and smoothing them out into elliptical galaxies.

    On the other hand, spiral galaxies found in regions away from the plane were mostly left out of the cosmic bar brawl, enabling them to preserve their structures.”

    So, there is a group of people on Mastodon that I have a lot of trouble relating to and understanding, that I somewhat lovingly call "The Misanthropes". They do a few things that boggle my mind a bit. The first is constantly announcing how they don't like humanity, and don't really want to be around people, which is okay, I guess, I can understand that, except you're doing it on SOCIAL media. If you just want to read articles, and look at pictures there are tons of better sources than social media, so why are you here? If you really hate all of humanity so much, you have the option in this one area to avoid it completely, why don't you?

    Another thing is no matter what question I ask or how innocuous it is, someone will question the validity of why I'm asking it or the entire foundation of the question. So, why?! If you read a question and it doesn't apply to you or it doesn't interest you, don't interact with it, these aren't compulsory. Or I will ask What someone's favorite color is, and someone will say purple, they will tell that person that purple is traditionally the color of royalty, and ask them Why they are supporting the Monarchy, or if someone says yellow, they will let them know that yellow is hideous, and they shouldn't like it. Most of my questions are opinion or experience based, so the answer doesn't really matter, I am just trying to learn what people are like. What do you get out of making other people feel bad about themselves over basically unimportant things? Does it make you feel better about yourself or superior in some way? I really want to understand. Overall, most people are interesting and pleasant and just want to connect, what do you want?

    zachariah,
    @zachariah@mas.to avatar

    @RickiTarr @sand

    I am not understanding your post as a complaint. It seems like you honestly want to understand them.

    Whether you’re complaining or not, if your goal is to improve this place by changing their behavior, that would a great achievement.

    I feel like this could be the start of a conversation (or conversations) about how to enable positive transformations for trolls, reply guys, incels, sexists, racists, fascists, etc. There’s got to be a path for them, right? There’s got to be ways we can be there for them, right?

    (Not saying it’s anyone’s duty to do this; please block and mute liberally. But if we feel like making the world a better place, it would be nice to know what’s effective.)

    zachariah,
    @zachariah@mas.to avatar

    Yeah, that strategy reminds me of—I can’t find it now, but Brian Brushwood (is he on Mastodon yet??) had a great video/article about handling trolls/hecklers and getting them on his side.

    One of the more limiting things about Signal is you have to give out your mobile number to everyone. Even if it is a burner, I still don't want to advertise to the world that it's mine.

    Was happy to read today that Signal is now beta testing a new username feature.

    Though I wonder if I should use more magnets and stack them up for more strength.

    I may need to redesign one of these to fit the magnets.

    T-Mobile seems like the least of the evils (mobile carriers), and I get great service all over town.

    But my neighborhood is in a phantom dead zone. I’ve got the 5G UC icon (Ultra Capacity) but nothing loads. This happens constantly.

    And where’s the @magenta Mastodon, so I can properly and publicly complain?

    zachariah,
    @zachariah@mas.to avatar

    @anathema_device

    Maybe. The 1.1.1.1 app overrides the DNS server settings of the phone. Also most places in town it worked just fine (before trying the 1.1.1.1 app). Same symptoms on my wife’s phone, too.

    To me it feels like my phone thinks it has a better connection than it does, the tower I’m on is just totally saturated, or there’s some sort of radio interference in the area.

    In any case, I haven’t even bothered to ask the carrier about it because I can’t see them helping.

    zachariah,
    @zachariah@mas.to avatar

    @anathema_device

    I think I’ve tried that. I’ll try it tomorrow and report back.
