Oh, he's very popular Ed. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads--they all adore him. They think he's a righteous dude.

Has Terry Brown been… underrated?

Yes, I know, he’s highly respected, the preeminent Rush producer, at the helm for their classic albums, integral to their early success.

But to me, he STILL doesn't get enough praise. To my ear his mixes aren’t just great, they’re perfect. The essential Rush sound I hear in my head is the Terry Brown mix. Especially by MP, the band sounds astounding, impeccably balanced, authoritative and original, warm and meaty, each instrument completely distinct but glued together onto a single warm, beefy, glorious whole.

Obviously all of Rush’s producers were top-shelf professionals. But every album following TB’s departure has been, for me, to some degree problematic. Power Windows might be the exception. Its mix is so strong, though even here I don’t love Alex’s thinned out guitar, keyboard excesses, less-acoustic sounding drums.

TB's importance was driven home for me recently. I’ve been getting into Clockwork Angels, appreciating the various sound textures of the album, and the bigness of the Alex’s guitar on several tracks.

Then local radio played Limelight in my car. I cranked it, of course, and for the thousandth time I heard it. Rush at their most perfect. I realized it was more impactful than the CO production. The mix is so crazy strong you don’t even question it. Neil’s drums are the archetype of what he sounds like in my mind. Geddy’s bass is growling perfectly and his singing is genuinely pleasing.

And the guitar! I know Terry worked closely with the boys in all aspects of the sound and music. I read somewhere that he worked hard with Alex on the Limelight solo. I’m a lifelong fan of Alex’s, including the later work, but I don’t think he ever topped the Limelight solo in later albums, it’s sonically haunting perfection.

I’m quite ignorant of the history of interpersonal dynamics in the band, but from the outside at least, I've always been a bit frustrated with how casual the band sounded about parting ways with TB. He was there from FBN onward, growing with the band, getting better with each album. His skills as a producer were peaking with MP and Signals. In interviews I never heard the band praising him to the degree I thought he deserved. I know, they speak respectfully of him, etc., and I haven’t read or heard everything on the matter. Someone here might set me straight on this.

But I do wonder why they didn’t attempt to reunite with him after their 80’s keyboard-heavy albums? I’m sure there were reasons. I can only dream of how good Presto might have been, for example, with TB as producer. Of course that would be an alternate reality, and Presto wouldn’t have been Presto, but one can dream.

Anyway, curious if anyone here relates to how special TB was as Rush's producer, or can provide perspective on his departure. Thx!

Rifftrax DOTW Buyer's Guide: ROTOR

Mankind is doomed to destroy itself, but Captain JB Coldyron <chortle> has the answer: a robot murder cop that will kill us all before we can do it ourselves. And when bumbling dumbassery sets murder cop ROTOR (Robotic Officer of the Tactical Operations Research/Reserve Unit, they couldn't keep that straight), it attacks a couple of bickering yuppies, and Coldyron sets out to stop him. This is a very 80s movie, from its music to its fashions to its aggressive grimness. Its action isn't special and its scifi is cheesy, but the real star of the unriffed film is its dialogue. This movie features some truly astounding turns of phrase, lines that probably should've been rejected as soon as someone read them out loud. Coldyron actually develops my single favorite line in all of the Rifftrax films, as it happens. There is also a wonderfully stilted exchange in the early going, during an exposition meeting. The dialogue is the most important aspect of this movie, but it has nuggets of hilariously cheesy gold throughout.

It should be no surprise that this movie, the kind of odd duck that the guys love, brings out a great riff. Just about every aspect of the movie sees good riffs directed at it, so much so that it could be hard to pick a single favorite, but if pressed, its hard to do much better than the guys do with a few smaller characters who pop up, and who tend to be jam packed with the movie's eccentricities. On the whole, though, the guys are definitely enjoying themselves, and it shows throughout, with an onslaught of riffs that isn't mean spirited at all, but has had enough of this movie's nonsense, and is going to make the most of it. This is a GREAT riff, a fusion of a movie that screams "we did this all by ourselves" and a riff that absolutely loves it.

ROTOR is recommended for: 80s scifi cheese fans, acronym fans, and Texas cliche fans.

ROTOR is not recommended for: those hopeful for the future, people irritated by lamely conceived "monsters" or anyone trying to learn how to write believable dialogue.

Pennsylvania’s Democratic-controlled House of Representatives approved a measure that would raise the minimum wage to $15 by 2026 in a close vote Tuesday, a long-held party campaign plank that has run up against Republican legislative majorities for years. The measure would gradually increase the minimum wage to $15 by...
