Brave Search fully using their own index since April 27, 2023. But they refuse to identify their crawler and rely on googlebot if sites want to be excluded. Also their search API monetization of possible copyrighted content while understandable is a bit doubious due to their public stance on transparency.
StartPage also blocks VPN usage.
DuckDuckGo by their own admission now re-rank “trusted” sites to the top when it comes to what they clasify as"misinformation" so calling their “censorship” mild is huge understatement.
They don’t pretent to be googlebot, they use their own crawler they just don’t share the name they use for it, so sites can’t exclude it with robots.txt. They just scrape the same sites that googlebot does, so if the site is excluded by googlebot they also skip it.
If I wanted to search for unverified info or misinfo, I could, but almost always I am lookkng for factual and sourced information. Please don’t force me to do otherwise.
That’s how all search engines fundamentally work though. The whole point if that they try to bring the most relevant results to the top and downrank things like spam and unhelpful/irrelevant results. Downranking misinfo spam websites isn’t “censorship”. Not ranking resullts would make search engines completely pointless.
I’d disagree with equating disinfo with spam. Spam seems easier to classify, sites that try to get ahead by having nonsense keywords or whatever and want to sell you something. Dis- or misinfo is trickier, you need to decide what is correct info. Do you understand what I mean?
Good that you’ve put the work in to compile your list, but for anyone new; this is a list of C-tier hosts, and seems to have a pretty strong focus on “privacy” hosts - some of the privacy features can be nice, but it can be a double edged sword. By using a privacy focussed host, you end up co-habitating with other privacy focussed users, which tends to have a higher-than-average concentration of sketchy or outright criminal users. This can have an impact on IP reputation and other operational issues, even if you aren’t doing anything sketchy yourself
Same. I've seen very little from them, but a lot of complaints about it. I've seen a bit of a tussle in the comment sections on posts that explicitly call them out. Usually it's just one of them though. Honestly, it feels like very few individuals are causing an issue and blocking the users is probably more fediverse friendly, but I still leave it up to the instance admins. Instances can defederate with them if they have a problem. They'll still see other stuff but those instances won't see them or their comments.
It’s pretty rare from my experience to just see one of them in a post. They seem to always post together as a group and spamming pictures to the point it’s hard to read the thread. You’re either lucky, always active at times these people are not, or your instance has already defederated from them.
I've only seen their comments in the past few days and I have seen their posts, though not recently. So it's entirely plausible. But again, I defer to those who have more data. I'm entirely on board if instance admins determine it's a big enough problem. I just want to make sure it's at least considered whether it's a user problem or instance problem is all.
I take it that beehaw’s walled garden policy is working as intended, if you users aren’t even aware of the tornados of shit going on out there lol. Good for you.
Personally I am kinda enjoying the chaos, but some threads over on sh.itjust.works are pretty wild with the Hex invasion.
You should never feed birds bread because it does not have the nutrients they need to stay healthy, feed them bird seed instead. Crows are actually often fond of dog food too.
Is there a CrowBro magazine or community out there? I loved that subreddit.
My mom left some plain potato chips at my place shortly after I moved in. I wasn’t going to eat them, so every few days, when I saw some crows sitting on the telephone line in the backyard, I’d leave a chip or two so they’d like me. But I knew it wasn’t healthy for them so when the bag ran out, I got some raw unsalted cashews and started leaving those instead. The crows stopped coming to my backyard almost immediately. I know the nuts and seeds are healthier, but I think they only wanted the tasty food with no nutritional content. Same, crows. Same.
In this case, raw is a misnomer. The packaging on the cashews says raw, but that just means they haven’t been roasted. They were still steamed, to neutralize the poison.
Its important to confirm any new food you wanna feed anything is safe for it to consume. If you have a digital assistant, just ask it beforehand or look it up. Please don’t feed things anything willy-nilly
They can be particular and not all crows like the same stuff. A little treat now and then probably isn't going to kill them, but don't feed them bread regularly.
I view it as a useful over simplification. We can simplify politics all the way down to “Left/Right” but that ignores so much of what motivates and drives people. In our current political environment, an ecofascist and an anarchosyndicalist might both be labeled as “left” even though the only thing they have in common is thinking “Maybe we shouldn’t just destroy the planet?” so the political compass is an easy to print visual aid to help guide people to that political views exist along multiple spectrums. My personal view is that the current best “political quiz with information at the backend about who you fit with” is 9axes, and that’s mostly because we’ve gotten to a point where we’re ready to start labeling the political compass as “no longer a useful over simplification, and instead a gross oversimplification”
an ecofascist and an anarchosyndicalist might both be labeled as “left”
but one isn't left, because any sort of fascism is incompatible with the left no matter what they call themselves, which is a perfect example of why the PC is bullshit - authoritarianism is inherently incompatible with leftism, but authoritarians and the right in general will, as it has done throughout history, co-opt leftist language and ideas to legitimise themselves and gain power.
The fact that the PC even exists, let alone how many people think it's reflective of reality, is just more evidence of the ignorance, both wilful and fostered (via state sanctioned education seeking to deny us an understanding of the system or the critical thinking skills to examine it, minimising any challenge to the status quo) that exists around politics, which the compass only serves to deepen.
Left and Right are far too ill defined in a complicated political system to say authoritarianism is inherently incompatible with leftism. The very first left / right split was between two different groups of authoritarians with one side wanting to a government similar to the prior monarchy they had enjoyed, and the other side establishing a brutal dictatorship that killed 40,000 people for not hating the concept of monarchy enough. We need a more complicated metaphor than Left / Right because otherwise we get stuck in “no true Scotsman” debates about the many different spectrums of opinion someone can have. I agree the political compass sucks, I don’t agree its a tool to coopt leftness by right wingers. I think, as I said, what we need is to start normalizing more complicated spectrum tools like 8values and 9axes
