I think one of the best examples is that neurodivergent people will read the bumper sticker "honk if you like $X" thinking that it’s instructing you to honk at them if you do indeed like $X. Not that if you honk at them in traffic it’s just a way of saying "oh you like $X haha" instead of admitting you’re just being a bad driver :neocat_floof_explode:
@hazelnoot it’s not to encourage honking at them it’s that if you honk at them because you’re mad at their driving it makes it seem like you’re honking at the bumper sticker. this blew my mind bc I would always be like "why would you want a bumper sticker that makes people honk at you"
If the sticker says “Honk if you love cake”, then the sticker isn’t a call for you to honk (because you love cake). It’s for the driver to feel a bit smug at you honking for their awful driving.

@aperture because it’s called "common sense". I hate that term so much it’s not common sense it’s literally just unwritten societal rules you are born up under. My mom used to constantly say I had no common sense and it’s like what do you expect?? I am neurodivergent?? I don’t get the same social pressure neurotypicals get? lol.

@aperture common sense here refers to cultural behavior not survival instinct. We have the term survival instinct for don’t do shit that’ll kill you. Or "no sense of self preservation" if you want to be fancy. Common sense is literally just cultural behavior in my part of the world. It makes me want to explode anyone who says the phrase. "Oh it’s just common sense to not walk outside after dark" ?? No?? It depends on the area?? There’s been rural areas I’ve felt entirely safe walking alone after dark??

@aperture yea. It’s mannerisms, no elbows on the table. My head weighs more than average and so I would use my elbow to rest my head on my palm. Constantly got yelled at it until I was an adult and now they don’t give a shit

@silly It’s Oklahoma law that you honk only if there is a present hazard on the road. Honking at those bumper stickers is technically against the law but you probably will not be cited for it.
I have to think this is why we have some of the infighting we do. It’s a genuine thing, I hear a strict definition sometimes and get confused why people are stretching the definition to mean other things. I have to get used to that definition that has unwritten social rules regarding it.

This could explain why Thomas originally said that word, but even if it was the explanation for the original post the way he proceeded to handle it afterwards was not okay.
