At my latest competition I booked a 29.5s time for solving a Rubik's Cube. The judge at my station said "Wow", not because it was an amazing time, but because they never expected a random old dude to score it. Defying expectations, FTW. https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/persons/2023JALK02

As time lurches forward, there's something to be said for keeping up with the cutting edge of technology. There's also something to be said for having a firm footing in the technologies of the past. The real movers and shakers will be well-versed in both.

@fundlandresearch Getting eliminated in the first round is fine! Honestly what motivates me to compete is mostly my kid wanting to go, but even without him, at this point, I might want to go. You compete in the hopes that you make the second round ... or just to have fun.

To everybody who points out the shortcomings of Donald Trump's conviction, that he might not serve time, that he may yet win re-election, that he may win on an appeal, those things matter.

BUT what really matters is he is being held accountable. His grimace after the verdict told me everything: HE DOESN'T LIKE THIS. That is a big part of the justice, to me. It matters. A lot.

@dimsumthinking @cocoadog I agree with your pessimism, believe me, but that doesn't take away from the fact that even having guilty verdicts, having him grimace at the result, having him sit in court for 6 weeks, having him bear the burden of "convicted felon" ... these are all victories, regardless of what else comes legally.

A nation releases its collective breath. Trump guilty on all counts. It's a start. The devastatingly misguided people who continue to support him will now have more to be ashamed about, when and if they ever wake up.

I don't know why the Apple Card, which 99% of customers probably set up with Apple Pay and never actually use the card, is made of titanium. And shipping the card back (with gas, labor, etc.) to save $0.50 of Titanium feels weird, too.
