In 2017 my landlord raised my rent from $1k to $1100 a month for the place I rented with my daughter because I finally broke down and got her a dog. I was annoyed because this wasn't in the lease but I was month to month by this time and figured I could probably get a house around me for the same cost and at least I'd be building equity. I closed in 2018 on a $120k fixer upper on 12 acres. I got a $30k rehab loan and my mortgage/insurance/property tax payment ended up being just over $1100. I spent 7 months in major renovations.

Fast forward to today, I have a 2.875% mortgage rate with just over $1000 a month all in payment (early COVID refi saved me about $100/month), my house was just appraised for $415k, and I was able to sell 5 acres of the land for a total of about $160k.

A free shelter dog ended up turning $150k into $575k. 10/10 would recommend.

Alito says Congress has ‘no authority’ to regulate Supreme Court (thehill.com)

Justice Samuel Alito said in an interview that Congress does not have the authority to regulate the Supreme Court, pushing back against Democratic efforts to mandate stronger ethics rules for the justices. Alito argued that the Constitution does not give Congress the power to regulate the Supreme Court. While Chief Justice John...

Consumers are losing here no matter what happened. Either MS buys AB and we get a more consolidated industry, or they don't, and we either continue with the shit show that is AB right now until TenCent buys them an consolidates them in a different, likely worse, more anti consumer way.

The real fault here is the greedy fuckers on the AB board who refused to change leadership after years of toxic mismanagement and instead steered the company towards sale territory for their own gains. Without their will to fix the company there was never a chance for another outcome.

I know I'm extrapolating this news too far but every time I see news like this it adds on to the reasons why I think this country will never have the will for a general strike. I don't blame the populace, I just think corporations have decimated our collective belief in majority power so badly that we can't even go without the latest season of "Is It Cake?" For a couple months to set even a tiny boundary.

Maine landlord solicited men who broke into apartment, threatened resident, deputies say

I don't claim to be a York County Deputy so I'm not here to make the accusation myself, but I do claim to be a guy who can read just below a headline and can see that according to the article, the York County Sheriff's department deputies did in fact make that accusation.

This is fair. This was just the only community I had knowledge of that would care about this news with a higher degree of specificity.

FTA:

Officials say three men kicked in the door to her apartment and began to threaten the woman inside. Investigators say they later learned the landlord of the building solicited the men following a landlord-tenant dispute.

I'm not accusing anyone of anything, the cops are.

Also, let's be clear that the burden of proof for an arrest is =/= to the burden of proof for indictment. If investigators are comfortable telling the press the landlord solicited goons to threaten a tenant then it is far from a stretch to think they should at least arrest the landlord.

YORK COUNTY, Maine —
Three people accused of breaking into a home and threatening the resident were allegedly asked to do so by a landlord.

The York County Sheriff's Office was called to a home on Acton Ridge Road over the weekend.

The resident told authorities a large group of motorcycles had arrived at her home and some of those bikers were trying to force their way inside.

Officials say three men kicked in the door to her apartment and began to threaten the woman inside. Investigators say they later learned the landlord of the building solicited the men following a landlord-tenant dispute.

Jessie Manchester, Christopher Moreau and Harley Faires were all charged with burglary and criminal threatening.

The men were arrested but have since been released from jail. Officials have not said what the dispute between the landlord or tenant was, or if the landlord is facing charges.

A clear victory for the free fediverse: Meta now says integrating with ActivityPub is "a long way out" (privacy.thenexus.today)

When Meta launched their new Twitter competitor Threads on July 5, they said that it would be compatible with the ActivityPub protocol, Mastodon, and all the other decentralized social networks in the fediverse "soon"....

TheOlympian,
TheOlympian avatar

I use Twitter exclusively for keeping up with the personalities that I enjoy, hence why Mastodon isn't the replacement for Twitter for me without them also joining. Threads at least got them there for me so I'm in the same boat of hoping we can at least kill Twitter if nothing else.

I'm hoping the best case is Threads (if they do federate) at least shows these folks that the only reason social media isn't as simple as something like email or owning a website is because these giant tech companies have been refusing to incorporate interoperable standards in good faith. None of the existing content creators I follow want to be beholden to the whims of petulant billionaires so if they can feel comfortable with a better way that they have the control I think change could happen. I'm fully aware the likely EEE play from Meta proposes a large risk, but just getting people used to the idea of the AP protocol and seeing it doesn't require big tech could be a massive boon.

Is there any more ethical solution to our current circumstances than "murder all billionaires"?

Not that I'm particularly against that - quite the opposite, in fact. But I'm wondering if anyone sees, or had seen a path to social and climate recovery/progress that could occur without first eradicating the class of people who most enjoy the present status quo.

Guardrails can only be enforced by the largest concentration of power. Since power will concentrate to those who push up against those guardrails most, they're incentivized to remove them. This is the conclusion of capitalism.

Maybe of it was written as BinK it would be more obvious? I though about that when I originally suggested it but felt like maybe it was a little on the nose.

Absolutely. Beyond shit management, I've never seen someone so desperately in love with meme culture who absolutely does not understand humor on any level.

This includes primaries. If the left isn't radical enough for you, you can change that within the primaries. It's wild how many complaints about the Dems come from people who only vote in presidential election years.

TheOlympian,
TheOlympian avatar

Exactly. Even if the real villain was capitalism all along (spoiler: it is), we can't abandon all of these battles along the way in hopes of winning the war in the end. The fight will take generations and we need to win ground on multiple fronts to have any hope of real, honest to goodness, change.
