A Star Wars Lemmy instance?

In a Fediverse, far far away…

I have been involved in a few discussions about how to help the Fediverse grow and diversify and one thing I feel is key is to have more specific instances rather than large general purposes ones. It helps people when they are signing up and can help give communities a home. I know because I signed up with feddit.uk, helped grow the place and am now part of the Admin team.

Or, to cut a long story short, should there be a Star Wars Lemmy instance? Today seems the perfect time to open the discussion.

After all, there are other focused instances like:

  • startrek.website
  • sffa.community
  • literature.cafe
  • ttrpg.network
  • adultswim.fan
  • dormi.zone
  • futurology.today
  • lemmy.radio
  • hobbit.world

Could move across existing communities:

And there are a lot of potential others:

  • SW Action Figures
  • SW Books
  • SW Comics
  • SW Board Games
  • SW Video Games
  • SW Cosplay
  • SW Helmets
  • SW Lightsabers
  • SW Galaxy of Heroes

Possible names? A lot of obvious ones will have been scooped up or you risk copyright infringement, but how about:

  • Fediverse’s Edge

May the FOSS be with you.

wjrii,

You get a handful of people dedicated to posting content and facilitating discussions, and sure, I’d subscribe and engage where the engagement is. The Star Trek instance has home very well for them I think.

That said, lemmy federation has never really worked exactly how it was envisioned; it’s more like there’s just escape hatches without losing literally everything if a large instance goes dark or goes to shit.

planetname.domain ? I don’t know if any are available, but some ideas :

  • tattooine.social
  • dagobah.space
  • hoth.books
  • coruscant.forum
  • bespin.io

Account migration is not really something that exists yet - e.g. if someone sent a message to your old account, it would not be forwarded to the new, so while you can move your “settings” that is not the same thing as full migration.

Then again, perhaps that is all the more reason to make such an instance sooner rather than later?

This picture below would have been much funnier if sent from my startrek.website account, except it has no posts at all from this community since two hours ago:-(. The Fediverse is really still in its infancy, unless this is simply how it is always going to be forever? Imho, those kinds of technical glitches are a main reason why people avoid coming to the Fediverse.

I just put my most active alts in the description and Matrix address, usually that’s enough

Sorry I don’t understand: the description of what? I don’t see any alts for you or a Matrix address in your account profile at @Blaze - it just says like “Blaze”, your number of posts and comments, cake day, etc.

If you mean like your last post/comment, someone who knows you and wants to follow you at the new address but missed that message, may not have the technical skills to know how to find your last message, especially if you follow it with additional replies so it is no longer your “last” one.

Anyway I’m saying that account migration is still a bit problematic on the Fediverse, not fully a solved and trivial thing atm.

Because this one is my most active account.

I used to do that (so add links to other accounts) on iusearch.fyi, but unfortunately that instance has since disappeared.

My other alts I still check from time to time.

Ah, reading your message again, I realized my Matrix address indeed wasn’t here. I just added it, it might not show on your instance because IIRC this information sometimes takes time to federate.

Worth noting there was a discussion about a Star Wars Mastodon instance on the old place, but I don’t think it ever happened (my suggestion for a name: Tootooine. If you named the different services after planets then how about; Lemmandalore?).

It might be you could join forces, share a server and expertise…

Hello,

Thank you for this post. I wasn’t even aware adultswim.fan was still a thing, I guess I never see them because nobody on my instance is subscribed to their communities.

Hobbit.world is very quiet, as is diagonlemmy.social (even though they still have a few active memes), so my concern is mostly about having enough people to keep the instance busy enough that it justifies its existence.

Out of the 3 others SW communities you linked, only !sw_unlimited is still active.

Maybe it would be better to try to first animate those communities on existing instance to see if there is an appetite for those?

Just my 2 cents obviously
