Christ. We need massive, global action. We need people in the west to commit to drastically lowering their carbon footprints, ideally by finding alternatives to gas powered cars and cars in general, and we need immediate action on geo-engineering. Atmospheric cloud dust, carbon capture, everything. We can't debate the ethics and morals forever. We just desperately need to start acting.
Yes, the time for debate and discussion are over. We just need people doing things and trying things on mass scale. I would highly recommend writing to your local representatives and ensuring they know it's an issue people do care about. We need change from the bottom up and top down.
We need people in the west to commit to drastically lowering their carbon footprints
Aaaaaand you've succumbed to corporate propaganda. Carbon footprint is a term coined by BP marketing to shift blame to individuals instead of corporations so nothing would be done about it.
We need the GOVERNMENTS of the world to start drastically reducing corporate carbon footprints. Which will then force peoples' footprints down when the cheap high-carbon goods and services are no longer available.
A huge portion of American carbon usage is personal transportation. The government can do many things to lower its carbon footprint but your life will look significantly different. Local governments are largely responsible for determining what citizens' primary means of transportation is and that's where people actually do have a lot of influence.
I'm not American so I already pay twice as much for fuel as Americans do. Something the US government should do, too. Gas should be at least $10/gallon. Makes you consider other forms of transit when travelling locally at least.
Yes, exactly. This is true. Gasoline is extremely subsidized in the US and even just ending those subsidies would encourage people to do something other than drive. Using that money to expand public transit options would be even better. Americans drive literally everywhere. There is no walking anywhere at all. We get very, very little physical activity and use a tremendous amount of fossil fuels and energy to get from Point A to Point B, on top of buying enormous gas guzzling SUVs.
I mean yes. This is true. Gasoline is extremely subsidized in the US and even just ending those subsidies would encourage people to do something other than drive. Using that money to expand public transit options would be even better.
Or we could just do both - while corporations are the largest polluters and need to be regulated, individual measures such as switching to a plant based diet are still useful.
No I think I'll just [redacted] ExonMobile HQ, sprinkle in some [redacted] pipelines, industrial [redacted] and maybe decide to [redacted] shareholders and CEOs.
On one hand they can keep using fossil fuels, and that will allow some humans to live more comfortably while they pump so much planet warming gasses into the climate system that it guarantees the future sterilization of the planet.
On the other hand, they could mandate a planet-wide ban on fossil fuels, which would be problematic because their food system is entirely reliant on fossil fuels, without which they could only feed about one billion humans.
Or maybe they will choose to gamble, and attempt to exert their control of the climate system through stratospheric injection of sulphate aerosols. It will be neat to see what possible unanticipated consequences this leads to!
Well whatever the humans choose, just know that we're all rooting for you! 🍿🎉
This has nothing at all to do with AI, we're already living in a world filled with misinformation. AI doesn't fundamentally change anything. The reality is that people come up with narratives they want to believe in, and then seek out information that fits in with those narratives.
Technically, you pretty much already are! The human body regularly removes reactive oxygen species from the system. If these were left unchecked, our life span would be MUCH shorter. Also, the cell cycle has numerous players responsible for preventing cancer. In addition, the immune system is a legitimate marvel, especially when it comes to preventing infections & disease. Human sweat, tears, mucus, saliva, and even a Mom's breast milk all posses antimicrobial aspects. And that's only the innate or 1st line of the immune system defense. Recently it was even discovered when in the womb, a mother conducts horizontal gene transfer to ensure the offsprings microbiome will take up most the microbial real estate effectively. This prevents pathogens from being able to adhere and grow when introduced into the body 🤯
The article say there's evidences, there's evidence, they have evidence but they don't say nothing. Tall me something, a clue, a hypothetical case, tell me something, don't just tell me there's evidences gathered by the NYT.
Prosecutor Robert McRight repeatedly mocked the defendants, aspersing their journalism and political views, and suggesting that they are anti-American.
"We have apple pie, baseball, and people hating the government," he quipped, according to the Citizen Times.
I mean, that's straight-up red panic-style BS right there. The article seems to insinuate that was said in court, but doesn't state so directly. If it was said in court, that's not a legal argument and should not have been allowed to pass in the first place. But even if it was simply quipped in a press release or similar, it's an absurd and shameful bit of rhetoric for any legal professional, much less a prosecutor, to be spouting.
What's worse than all that is that it worked. Despite what the body cam footage showed, despite the prosecutor's unprofessional manner, despite all the BS in the case, the jury still found that the prosecution had proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt.
It's getting scarier and scarier out here every day.
