  • Outer Wilds The most sublime game I’ve ever played. I can’t begin to describe how this game made me feel. It’s also an excellently designed game. If you’ve never played it before, go in blind, because even the smallest spoilers risk diminishing your experience. It’s an open world, exploration adventure game, which involves space travel, a quaint setting and fun physics

  • Disco Elysium Another game that made me feel things. One of my favourites

  • Tetris Played it on a Gameboy back in’ day. It’s a great game

  • Rollercoaster Tycoon 2

  • Halo Reach I don’t even know if I believe this was the best Halo game, I was just indecisive and I’m biased because I like the DMR and the SWAT multiplayer game mode (no shields, so a headshot kills in 1)

  • Deep Rock Galactic Feel like it’s the peak of the four person squad based kind of game. I’ve literally got hundreds of hours in this game.

  • Stardew Valley I didn’t actually vibe with this too much personally, but I’ve got to respect it for how accessible it is to many different kinds of gamer. It executes what it set out to do perfectly.

  • Faster than Light
    • I don’t even like rogue likes generally. The soundtrack is great.

I’ve already played it but yes, that’s a great recommendation for anyone who has enjoyed the games I mentioned. I especially enjoyed it because I’m also a fan of Dark Souls (& other FromSoft games), and it was neat to have souls-like combat in such a cute packaging.

Mental health systems are so overburdened that it’s not uncommon for someone assessing a trans person’s poor mental health to go “well, you’re experiencing [wide array of concerning mental health symptoms], but it’s my opinion that these symptoms are almost entirely attributable to gender dysphoria, and you’re already on the waitlist for the gender identity clinic, so there’s nothing more I can do.” and then they discharge them.

With such huge wait lists, it would make sense to keep someone on your books to keep an eye on them at least, if they’ve expressed feelings about self harm, but that doesn’t happen because the system hasn’t sufficiently acknowledged just how fucked the trans healthcare wait times are. Like, in the UK, there’s a statutory maximum of 18 weeks wait from when the referral was made until your first appointment, but the standard wait for an adult to have a first appointment at a gender identity clinic (which doesn’t involve any treatment, that comes months later) is literally years. But officially, you should be seen within 18 weeks, and under those circumstances, well the mental health people discharging you is reasonable if there’s little they can do to support you

Even if the Seine isn’t ready in time for the games, the progress made has been incredible. I’ve found the infrastructure aspects especially interesting, given that the UK’s rivers have been struggling under privatised underinvestment.

People who knowingly make and spread antisemitic and bigoted memes leverage ambiguity and plausible deniability to facilitate their reach; it’s necessary to be ever mindful of nuances in the memes we share if we don’t want to unwittingly spread harmful content.

I’m glad for people like you, because I’ve spent a good chunk of my life desperately wishing to be in that club, and then another chunk being sad that I wouldn’t be able to be. I was miserable and latched onto something that I believed would alleviate it, but I nowadays definitely think I’m happier not being in that club.

I think I mostly just wanted to be in the "so rich I never have to think about money again. Growing up super poor left its marks on me and now even though I am relatively secure and comfortable, I still have a background anxiety about whether I’ll have enough.

There’s an instinct within me that screams that I shouldn’t share resources with other people unless I’m sure I have more than enough for myself. If I indulged that instinct, that would mean that in a situation where there’s enough for everyone, I’d feel most comfortable with 3 or more shares, because then even if I gave away one of my shares to someone else, I’d still have what I need, plus some buffer. There’s a reason I work very hard to not indulge that instinct though, because I don’t want to hoard at the expense of other people like me.

Like I say, it’s just part of a wish of not having to think about money at all. I had some very rich friends in uni, and sometimes they’d shop in places where the clothes didn’t have price tags, the kinds of places where if you had to ask, you couldn’t afford it. I envied the fact that they didn’t have to think about money more than I did the material luxuries they could afford

I agree, the fact that the painting was never titled or displayed publicly adds a lot to the work. It was just in his dining room, alongside other similar paintings, if I recall. That context makes the already unnerving work hit harder. Thanks for sharing this tidbit

I tried to fact check the original anecdote. Turns out there is a source for this, it appears to be from Historia Augusta, a collection of biographies of Roman emperors in the 2nd and 3rd century CE. However, it’s highly debated about how reliable the work is — when it was written is highly debated but it seems to be from the 4th or 5th century CE (which by itself isn’t too big of a problem), and the author seems to be using it to make points about contemporary issues, sort of as a parody. It’s not clear to modern scholars which parts are grounded in the sources and what has been added for flair .

Anyway, here’s another story that immediately precedes the chicken one in Historia Augusta:

“Gallienus was, moreover, exceedingly clever, and I would do well to add a few examples of his sharp wit here. Once, when he had a huge bull sent into the amphitheater and the gladiator who was sent to kill him proved unable to kill the bull even after being brought out ten times, Gallienus sent the man a crown. When everyone began to murmur and wonder what the world was coming to for a totally incompetent person to be crowned, Gallienus ordered a herald to announce, ‘It is a difficult thing not to wound a bull so many times.’ "

Based on that, actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if the merchant in the original story was allowed to live. Partly because as you say, the humiliation may have been seen as punishment enough, but also it’s plausible that the merchant ended up being a sort of monument to Gallienus’ cleverness. This is just speculation though — if the author of Historia Augusta took liberties with history to tell a good story, then I see nothing wrong with my fun headcanons

I personally don’t have nearly as much of a problem with that than I do with Reddit making AI deals. I’m still not keen on the idea of having anything I interact with being scraped for training AI, but aside from only interacting in closed wall spaces that I or someone I trust controls, I can’t change that. That’a not great for actually interacting with the world though, so it seems that I need to accept that scraping is going to happen. Given that, I’d definitely rather be on Lemmy than Reddit.

And this way, who knows, maybe we’re on our way to the almost utopian “open digital commons”

I wonder to what extent this is driving polarisation. I’ve been thinking a lot recently about what it would take to be able to break bread with someone who was very right wing politically. I see a lot of right wing people who I have a lot of common ground with, if I recognise that the material conditions they’re living under are making them desperate for an alternative. Ofc, I’m not keen on the fact that many of them believe that people like me (queer, leftists at universities) are to blame for those material conditions, but I like to imagine a world where we could work on the same team against the things that are actually to blame.

I think the gerrymandering in the US probably makes it so that each party has less reason to court voters of the other side. I can imagine what it must feel like to be a republican in a super blue state — even if you do vote, it won’t matter, and then every choice the elected government makes would perpetuate this idea of the big bad “other”. I wonder how much this affects things though, given that the polarisation is driven by many complex factors

I have a friend who’s pretty wealthy and they feel pretty guilty about it. They’re looking at buying a house, spending the vast majority of their inherited wealth in the process. My belief is that whilst being able to do this is in a huge level of privilege, they’re much more likely to be dining than on the menu at an “eat the rich” party. And honestly, that baffles me somewhat — it highlights just how obscenely wealthy the ultra rich are if my wealthy friend is nowhere in the same ballpark

I wish I could feel hopeful for this.

Doubts about Starmer’s Labour aside, even if I had complete trust in an incoming Labour government, I’d be worried; it’s a lot easier to destroy than it is to build, and something I fear is if in 5 years, progress has been made, but the amount of readily visible progress is small enough that the Tories go “see, we told you that Labour couldn’t be trusted with the economy” and slide back into government.

Probably not helping is seeing the news from the US also gearing up for an election — it doesn’t feel like it’s been very long at all since we were all relieved that Biden won out over Trump, but now here we are again.

If you’re thinking about a particular encampment that’s near you, consider reaching out to ask, because this’ll be highly situational. If they are, as you say, well supplied, then getting something they already have plenty of might make their supplies management harder (which ofc, you know, or you wouldn’t be asking this question).

Depending on how open your nearest encampment is and your comfort levels in dropping by, going in person to ask is one way. Dropping a message on social media may also be possible: a few of the encampments that I know of would be contactable via social media - even if most of the organising is done on more secure mediums such as signal, there’s usually some level of Instagram or similar going on.
