Your statement is technically true but wrong in practice. Because your statement applies to EVERYTHING on the Internet. We had tons of error ridden garbage articles written by underpaid interns long before AI.
And no, fact checking is quicker than writing something from scratch. Just like verifying Wikipedia sources is quicker than writing a Wikipedia article.
Used servers/workstations are likely more reliable than new consumer.
They were very likely kept temperature controlled, have ECC, and are actually known working instead of something like Asus. If I remember correctly, PC mortality is very high the first 6 months, goes down to near zero for 5 years, then starts going back up.
Replace the SSD/hard drive and you are good. You might not even have to do that. I checked the stats on the SSD that came with my used Lenovo workstation and it had like 20 hours on it.
Been finding some good deals on 2.5 disks lately, but have never bought one before. Have a couple of 3.5 disks on the other hand in my Unraid server. Wondering how much it matters wether I get a 2.5 or not? What form factor do you prefer/usually go for?
Smaller doesn’t need to be more complex. 3.5" drives weren’t more complex than 5.25" drives.
A smaller head means a smaller drive actuator. Less mass and smaller size means it can compensate much quicker in response to vibration detection.
Back when full height 5.25" drives were the norm, you couldn’t pick up your PC while running without causing an error. Those tiny CF card sized drives failed but took extreme abuse compared to big drives.
We’ve got one cat 6months and the other 3months old, currently both using the litterbox. However we’re going to move to a new house soon, and eventually try to transition them to getting used to doing their business outdoors instead of the litterbox. Does anyone have any tips or best practices for this transition?...
Your government knows it’s a problem but doesn’t care.
"A report by the Norwegian Ornithological Association (NOF) from 2018 states that there were about 770,000 cats in Norway in 2016, and that these together kill circa 7 million birds each year. "
Pet culture in the US was the same as Norway 40 years ago. Cats were primarily outdoor pets allowed to come and go as they pleased. The 1960’s cartoon the Flintstones showed Fred Flintstone throwing the cat outside at night in every episode during the end credits.
However the modern environmental science has proven the damage domestic cats have on the environment. As such there has been a cultural shift in the younger generations, without any government intervention, to keep cats indoors.
Spay and neutering feral cats has become the cultural norm among environmentally conscious youth.
But the problem isn’t true feral cats. The problem is pet owners who allow their cats to be outdoor cats. Pet cats aren’t subject to normal predator/prey population constraints. They are fed at home and will then kill all native small fauna beyond natural recovery. Because after all small fauna is gone, the cats go inside to eat as much as they want. The environment can never achieve a natural balance.
That the native cat is also a house cat is irrelevant to the problem. House cats destroy the ecosystem because they eat food you provide after they’ve depopulated the local environment. It doesn’t matter what breed they are.
Would you let your dog run completely free too? No boundaries, no leash, day or night?
A responsible cat owner can let their cat outside but do it supervised.
And if you are not getting your cat from a shelter, you are perpetuating the problem today. It’s not something from 1000 years ago if you bought from a breeder.
Been thinking of making a post like this for some time, apologies if some of this is not completely relevant: this community seems more like it’s about Reddit the platform/product than Reddit the social “thing”, but I’m sure a lot of people have similar experiences to mine. Maybe on some instances more than others....
What’s the blatant falsehood? You are required to calculate taxes that the government largely already knows the answer. If you calculate wrong, you get a letter from the Government telling you where you were wrong which proves they knew the correct answers all along. If you don’t pay that fine, the end result will be prison.
That isn’t true. They check all tax returns based on W2, 1099’s and other documents they receive from corporations that paid you money.
An audit is completely different from the automatic checks that make sure every bank record of interest and stock sale lines up with what you claimed on taxes.
If you miss any stock sale or any reported income, you will get a computer generated letter from the IRS for the amount you owe. If you pay too much by accident, you will also get a computer generated check back from the IRS.
I make a mistake every few years and get a bill with fine or a check from the IRS. I no longer stressed about taxes because I know they will correct it for me in a few months anyway. The fine is small because I’ve luckily never made a big mistake. I’ve gotten back large checks for years I forgot I paid estimated taxes and overpaid my taxes.
You watched half of one episode. You can’t claim the series Lower Decks is awful after watching half of one episode.
The writers wrote a joke where a character comments that Nick Locarno looks just like Tom Paris. It takes a fan to write that joke. It takes a fan to understand that joke.
Maybe you just didn’t get the inside jokes they throw out every 5 minutes.
I didn’t even need to watch a single episode of Prodigy to know it wasn’t for me. Prodigy was created to expand the market to children. I explicitly called out Trek shows that are about marketing to new demographics as compared to Lower Decks which was written for existing TNG/DS9/Voyager fans.
Orville had many, many episodes of Family Guy humor jokes that needed to be slogged through before finding it’s footing.
I agree that Orville is the best current Trek. But I don’t understand your Lower Decks comments. You said you watched half of one episode, then you confused it with Prodigy. Have you actually watched Lower Decks or do you have it confused with Prodigy?

It's been around a year since a lot of us quit Reddit, myself included. I'm happy with Lemmy, but I still feel a bit lost online since leaving the old site. Discussion?
