Will there really be a big influx of users on the 30th?

I’ve seen many comments and posts regarding the API fiasco on Reddit, with the claim that there will be a huge influx of users when that happens. I’m all for it, but I find it hard to believe that the average or even above average user will make the effort to switch.

You "kind of" can -- depending of how exhausted you are.

Not yet, but I'm planning to. And I don't think there will be any "pitfalls" at all other than your microsd dying in a couple of months rather than years due to it getting hammered constantly by API requests, etc.

I would wonder how well it would perform.

Something between "usable" to "a complete nightmare" -- depending of how popular the lemmy instance is. Which would scare new users away, leaving it as a "cool kids only" thing. Then again, theres the fact that the power draw is little to none, which is very important regarding most self-hosting stuff -- "can't use it if I can't maintain it".

"There is a place for everything", and forcing unrelated subjects/situations into everyone "because its a fight for human rights" is not the way to sort/deal with it. But rather, create unnecessary noise and trouble. Or else we'd have folks saving the world by shouting against the wall(s) constantly -- which is (pretty much) at the same level of importance than what is being (forcefully) proposed here.

Something that is based on user activity and active users after a specific time. i.e the more users it has, the more highlighted it gets. (And before someone says about bots, etcetc that can be easily circumvented with filters and the like.)

Yes and no. Toxicity will always be around indeed... but we can definitely lessen its effect.

Most of those are simple commands, or ones that doesn't require any sort of maintenance at all -- other than fixing a few (personal) errors and adding a few small improvements. If anything, that is why I always add a --rm flag on those to add an emphasis on "disposable" (even if it is "borked", whatever wrong that happens in there goes down the drain immediately).

Then again, I can always stop being a lazy bun with those band-aid fixes and give (whatever important command I have) an extra bump every month or so.

The "karma system" is a perfect example of why giving power/control to users is a bad idea -- it will always be exploited/abused in one way or another. Something something "this is why we can't have nice things."

Why YSK? Comments you reply positively to, should definitely get your upvote. Comments you disagree with should be at your discretion. Trolls deserve downvotes (seriously, they live for those). Disagreeing with someone in the midst of a good discussion doesn't necessarily warrant one, and might deserve an upvote. Even if you...

That is a common courtesy -- at the same "line of thought" of "don't touch fire, or else it will hurt you."
