Unfortunately Roma and other Travellers (the g word for them is considered a slur unless being reclaimed by one of their own) were (and still are) persecuted across Europe with little to no exception, so she likely faced violence and hate throughout her life, wherever she was (but I agree, it’s poignant to think about).
The fact that she was documented at all, especially by someone outside of their community, is incredible in its own right.
I don’t see an issue with the title, because as you say, it’s the name of the piece, and also part of history. Someone using the word today is a different story.
The latter all but guarantees an autocratic takeover if the revolutionaries don’t already have a new government ready to go. Which is not something I’ve ever seen even touched in when people talk revolution.
The expectation that revolutionaries aiming for a future without hierarchy, states, or class should have a plan for exactly those ready to go is how you actually get the autocratic takeover - because you’re maintaining the existing systems of power for the sake of taking comfort in the familiar (or worse - as a deliberate ploy by those presenting themselves as “in charge” to grab power).
The whole point of a revolution, from an an-com point of view anyway, is to start building something new from the bottom up, horizontally, abolishing hierarchy and power structures, not just replace the existing ones with our own.
The fact that people can’t even begin to imagine a different way of living, even though our existence under kings and masters has only been a blink in human existence and civilisation, just goes to show how well the indoctrination works, but better is possible once you start unlearning constructs you’ve come to accept as facts.
Having just looked it up, this painting is probably too late (was done after proper measuring was implemented), but still made me think of this piece of research I saw referenced in a documentary about Venice (I think it was Saving Venice) where they make use of the near-photographic paintings to asses the changing water levels.
I hate my sim carrying loads of stuff for all sorts of reasons (I think it creates lag, I hate having to scroll through a load of items to find what I want, there are bugs where the whole inventory disappears when you do certain things and that seems to happens less when they carry less stuff), so I try to keep the bare minimum...
And - wow, I thought I was good at keeping my inventory minimal, obviously not! Do you just not collect things in game and sell most anything else you get as you get it?
I’ve found that often “plant based” is a cop out and that companies that use it exclusively (so not only on the product, but also when you ask them outright if a product is suitable for vegans and they will only repeat “plant based”) often make no effort to ensure the product is actually vegan (so no effort to avoid cross contamination and no testing to ensure no animal products have ended up in the food), they just want the vegan £££ and count on most people not taking the time to look in to it, or not caring enough.
Plantastic and “meet free” Fridge Raiders are a couple of examples that come to mind (I have been in touch with both manufacturers and both are very careful to never confirm that their products are suitable for vegans despite them marketing them directly at us), and also Flash I think it was, that I’ve noticed have now changed their ad which used to say something like “made with A plant based ingredient” as if that makes the whole product plant based…
It’s a bit like greenwashing - wanting to make money off of the “green” market, without investing any money or effort to comply with the labelling rules.
And I find that vegans who purity test and gatekeep others are insufferable asses, who have a much deeper impact on why people hate vegans.
I bet it never even crossed your mind that some people with allergies and other medical conditions that mean they’re avoiding certain ingredients use a vegan label for convenience (since it’s easier to scan a “may contain” list, if there even is one, than an entire ingredients list with all its often ambiguous ingredient names), rather than ethics, nor can you explain how someone preferring to avoid cross contamination for whatever reason affects literally anyone but them…
I bet you there are plenty that are, but either way, if it were a woman this story was about, she would 100% be framed as a “crazy” cat lady, but it’s a man, so it’s the situation that is “crazy”, not him…
Amazing how it’s all so easily wrapped up and explained away (lol, only in your own mind) when you simply completely ignore the circumstances and systems that create a situation like you describe…
there are also some people who think they are in this category when in reality their stress is due to self-imposed standards of living that are higher than necessary. Or anxiety and other psychological problems that could be addressed through non-material strategies.
also encouraged and exacerbated by capitalism (the former - to create the illusion of a “middle class” for people to aspire to and vote against their own actual material conditions, the latter - by commodifying health care and pathologizing anything that harms “productivity”)
So, you live on a desert island? because if you don’t, and you don’t, there is plenty you can do about it… I guarantee that wherever you are, there is a supportive community to be a part of.
Deep Impact is on tv every few weeks for some reason, and if nothing else is on, I’ll switch to it. Armageddon comes on a couple of times a year, and I can’t remember the last time I watched it. Others have mentioned the main reasons already - it’s far too cheesy and Ben Affleck is terrible.
Agreed. I’ve not watched Barbie yet, ngl, even with the progressive plot its meant to have, it strikes me as 90% advertising, and the different variety of toy you mention really plays well in to that so it works well enough, but I agree, Sims doesn’t even have that, and I’m really struggling to see what kind of plot they could make up to make it distinctively “Sims”. That leaves us with 100% advertising, which if EA are involved, isn’t surprising really.
I don’t make my own either, I’m as much as a loner when I play Sims as I am irl 😂 Either way, if that’s how they’re going to relate it to the game, it’s even less appealing (personally of course)
So they could dig deep from the source material if they’re motivated
“if” doing all the heavy lifting there, like you say, the fandom that go that deep in to it isn’t very big, but even if it was, film makers are known for fucking that kind of thing up because they’re not making it for the fans.
Most likely just an exec’s coke induced plan to try and capture some of that Barbie money/audience while promoting the series.
I should have read through your whole comment before I started mine lol, I completely agree.
A sim drops trash and now can’t walk around it doing their ‘hey you - help here - hand wave’.
especially gave me a good chuckle Definitely agree about giving money to EA, I would never pay to watch it (or bother downloading it, likely just wait until it pops up on tv one day)
I’ve been avoiding looking at the Sims alternatives that I’ve been hearing about because my pc is old and sad and upgrading just isn’t a high priority at the minute and I don’t know that I could resist getting them all and crashing it 😂 But I’m glad they’re coming along and have solid support, If I’m ever going to pay for a game again, it’d be one/all of these alternatives that are brewing…

What does your sims inventory look like?
