Track_Shovel,

There is no space between the last letter of a sentence and punctuation.

Please , please , make it stop !

Track_Shovel,

Oh, don’t get me started.

Track_Shovel,

I haven’t been following that closlsy, but holy shit they have him dead to rights.

He should be strung up from his heels in times square, like how Mussolini wasi

Track_Shovel,

When I did my masters, biochar was just starting out with regards to becoming popular. I used it in my trial, and found it had good N retention properties due to its charge. In the bioassay, peat + soil was better than biochar + soil, but it was close, which was interesting, given how inert biochar generally is.

I have seen studies where they co-apply it with manure, but haven’t read the results because I’ve gotten sucked into other topics.

Your trials are cool.

The crushed gravel + amendments makes sense, though, since you are creating a well drained soil with reasonable amounts of nutrients.

Track_Shovel,

I think it’s a good way to grow specialty crops (berries etc), and a great idea in space limited countries (Singapore mentioned).

I also think the inputs are pretty big, but you can control things better.

I don’t think it’s the solution to our food issues, but I think it can be used to build robustness into our system and decrease chemical inputs (mostly)

Track_Shovel,

I think they’re more getting at how the differences in plant community dynamics can influence ecosystem recovery and resource management. It’s unsurprising that lodgepole didn’t do as well with a shitpile of alder growing there. However, it is interesting that a little bit didn’t hurt it, and that at higher amounts of alder, alder itself did worse.

Track_Shovel,

There’s a big interest in copper mining development right now because of this shortage. Alternatively, I imagine recyclers are getting creative with new methods.

Track_Shovel,

They’re the 3rd largest producer of copper, globally

Track_Shovel,

I get it; it seems cruel to not them roam, but it’s fucking irresponsible. You wouldn’t let a dog out on its own to roam the neighborhood; why is it ok with cats?

Track_Shovel,

You glorious mother fucker. Thank so much!

Track_Shovel,

I use it, but some things are lacking. I find the mobile site better at the moment

Track_Shovel,

Yeah that’s my approach

Track_Shovel,

a bold move for a company that has marginal content. there are way better paid options out there.

Track_Shovel,

interesting read.

one thing I didn’t like though is that there weren’t any cited case studies linking soil biodiversity to human health. Their concept makes sense, but it would be really interesting to see how big of a benefit soil exposure has. It’s likely impossible to prove though - look at how hard it is to prove health benefits of some foods.

sidebar: anything soil related is welcome here <3. also thank you so much for posting lately! you’re helping grow this community AND giving me interesting articles to read. I’d hug you if you weren’t in another continent

Track_Shovel,

How would splitting off fix that problem, though? If 100k users joined beehaw, and they stop syncing with the rest of the federation, they still have 100k new users to moderate.

Or am I looking at this backwards, and they want their gated garden, absent of slugs?

Track_Shovel,

there are hungry people even with agriculture. there may be more with permaculture (if that’s what you’re implying). However, the thing to note is that with our current system we could EASILY feed everyone until they looked like Mr. Cresote, but we don’t. we actively choose not to.

ya capitalism

Track_Shovel,

I’m the one calling it unscientific. I would like to clarify, that I’m only making that statement RE: weird techniques (like electroculture) that have no backing, or, in the case of electroculture, are just flat incorrect.

Another poster in my local perm group was promoting his method of soil homeopathy…a method that inherently does not work in soil systems, as they often require large inputs to change things.

I would also like to point out that while I agree with you re: monoculture = bad, I disagree that GMOs are inherently bad. all of the crops we grow for the most part have had their genetics modified through selective breeding. Wheat came from a rice-grass like species, and was domestic centuries ago. I think what you are opposed to, however, are large inputs of petrochemical like pesticides, and Fertilizers.

Again, fertilizers aren’t inherently bad themselves, but like any soil amendment (including those used in permaculture) need to be used carefully and their application rates calculated based on site specific soil test values. mass application of any amendment is going to place you in a bad situation.

Finally, I want to say I’m not trying to pick your perspective apart, but to point out that there is a LOT to consider in fixing agriculture, and that both systems have their merits. I think the right management of ag systems lies somewhere in the middle of conventional vs perm ag.

Track_Shovel,

I like permaculture but there is some absolutely quackery I’m the field. I saw a guy promoting elctoculture stuff in a local perm group.

Track_Shovel,

a little louder for the people in the back!
