I have two different ISPs serving the entire town I live in, both offering symmetric gigabit fiber to the home to the entire town, but can I get a lick of IPv6? Of course not!

Trainguyrom,

Every computer product is made in china these days

Trainguyrom,

get hyped for COSMIC

Honestly I’m just excited for a non-gnome DE with an actual company backing it. I can’t wrap my head around gnome’s expectations for how you use it, so the fact that it’s the default on every enterprise-backed Linux project is annoying as heck

Trainguyrom,

I tossed mint on a PC after about 8 years of not using mint at all and I’ve been extremely impressed at how stable and friendly it is. It works exactly how you expect it to and Cinnamon has the best default workspace implementation of any DE I’ve used

Trainguyrom,

Its one of the challenges that seriously doesn’t seem to have an easy solution. Like the closest I can think of is a centralized authority that the service can send a identity verification request to that, then the user can sign into the centralized authority and confirm “yes I am the person you requested to verify”

This would also help with annoying employment verification where I have to bring every document needed to steal my identity to my new employer for them to scan and digitally store indefinitely then return said documents to my safe

Trainguyrom,

I even had to make a login.gov account to apply to some federal jobs (ironically enough one was with the IRS even!)

On a related note, it appears based on their job listings that the IRS will not hire anyone who owes them money

Trainguyrom,

Now, if it was a flat tax, a fixed percent…But they gotta make sure the middle class is paying 22% of their income to the feds and the billionaires pay one tenth of a percent… you know… for reasons.

I fall into the lower end of the middle class (nationally) and my income tax is about 11%, but on top of that, after deductions and credits I end up deducting myself into the lowest tax bracket and collecting credits so I get a nice chunk back every year. To actually pay a full 22% of your income in income taxes, you must be making pretty good bank (and probably spending pretty good bank if you’re still considering yourself middle class)

Flat taxes are extremely regressive. The whole idea of tax brackets is that those with more ability to pay pay more and those with less ability to pay pay less. If you only make 22k/year you need all of that and that $2200 can be pretty lifechanging, but if you make 220k per year you can live without that $22k. There’s also fun stuff with how much tax revenue the government can actually bring in depending on who they tax harder, and generally it favors taxing the rich at a much higher percentage rate than they do the poor.

Trainguyrom,

I keep bringing up how awesome the new SAVE federal student loan repayment program is. Income based repayments that go as low as $0 with the federal government covering any interest that you payment would have gone towards, plus after 10 years of payments balances of $12k and less are forgiven (11 years for $13k, 12 years for $14k, etc.)

So if you got a low paying degree from a community college, like say an early childhood education degree, you get pretty close to free education since you can make your $0 payments every month and get your entire student debt forgiven after a decade. Or if you have a career that doesn’t pay much at first but ratchets up you only make payments when you have the income to make them, and still get forgiven after 10 years, and there’s no real penalty to paying the $0 payments earlier since the balance hasn’t grown and is still forgiven on the same date. Or like many people who attend community college, if you end up dropping out and getting no degree, you’re not penalized like earlier plans would have penalized you.

Trainguyrom,

I remember trying too hard to like Garfield as a kid and ultimately giving up. I don’t know if it’s not my kind of humor or if there’s a specific kind of humor for syndicated comics that just doesn’t translate well to other mediums

Trainguyrom,

Not every intersection can or should be replaced with a roundabout, but its a tool that is certainly underutilized in the American road designer’s tool belt

Trainguyrom,

Or if we’re shitposting, every one of those cars contains at least 10k in scrap metal.

From what I’ve heard from folks who have had worn out beaters with no miles left in them crushed, its like a $500-1000 in scrap metal, so not as bad as you might think actually

Trainguyrom,

The fact it is a revenue source has more to do with people not following the law than the system.

The problem is cities reducing the timings, because it’ll go from green to red without sufficient time to safely stop. The whole purpose of the yellow light is to give you wiggle room to either stop or get through the intersection before the next cycle. If a sudden red forces you to slam on the breaks hard enough to risk being rear ended (or worse in icy conditions risk sliding into the intersection)

Plus if the timings are tight enough someone trying to stop/complete their menuever might find themselves in the intersection with opposing traffic now trying to enter

Traffic cameras are just trying to put out a greese fire by throwing water on it. If you don’t know better it seems like a good idea, but in reality it just makes the problem worse

Trainguyrom,

Euro Truck Simulator taught me that some countries have ways of indicating how long is left in a light. Some have progress bars, some go from solid to flashing to indicate an imminent change, and some do creative stuff with extra lights

Trainguyrom,

I’ve done stuff like this finding a specific friends house in some small towns. “Okay they’re on suchandsuch street, lets try to find it!” then “okay I found suchandsuch street, now lets figure out where their house number is”

Meanwhile my parents will blindly follow the GPS onto closed roads and old logging trails

Trainguyrom,

One option I’m aware of that nobody seems to consider is that in NA, the power delivered to the home is approximately 240v split-phase

Or component makers could…y’know focus a bit more on efficiency again so we aren’t talking about shifting electrical standards just to play Crisis in a decade?

On a related note, there’s still tons of homes with electrical circuits that are only 2 prong and don’t have a dedicated ground wire. Better to encourage those to get replaced long before trying to get people to add multiple 240V circuits anywhere they think there might be a computer plugged in.

Trainguyrom, (edited )

Homelabbers absolutely are a strange edgecase where a 240v circuit or two start making a ton of sense, but we’re far from the norm. Heck the average American doesn’t even own a desktop or laptop computer anymore, let alone the 1-2 dozen computers IT types and homelabbers might have on hand. It’s all about perspective really…

Edit: Yikes that was a reading comprehension fail. You already said its an unusual usecase

Trainguyrom,

I swear I’ve seen inflation hit processed foods far harder than it has less processed foods. That and the delta between off-brand and name brand has become massive. At least $5 for a large bag of FritoLay chips, but most off brands are still less than $2 for roughly equivalent product

Trainguyrom,

That part was interesting, since I live in a rural area surrounded by farms (primarily feed corn and livestock but across the many family farms around where I live pretty much everything gets farmed), and while I saw egg prices rise, milk prices largely remained the same with just noticable shortages

Trainguyrom,

Bro it’s not Beetlejuice. Google isn’t going to magically appear and ruin your day if you utter it’s product name 3 times

Trainguyrom,

Presumably they could make entering or leaving the country very difficult. So if you have family/friends in the US or ever have a reason to travel back to the country (pleasure or business) you could find yourself saddled with more debt than you might ever be able to repay

Trainguyrom,

Didn’t he travel a good distance to “defend” a business

If I remember correctly he traveled from a neighboring town to Kenosha WI. But people get hung up on how he traveled from his home in Illinois all the way to Wisconsin to do this without bothering to look at a map and see that Kenosha is right on the border with Illinois

But he also immediately after getting bailed out went and did a photo op/party with white nationalists, I think I remember he even made white nationalist gestures for the camera so guilty or not he’s a piece of shit

Trainguyrom,

like what midwesterners get up to when they dream up new “casseroles.”

I’m in this picture and I don’t like it

Trainguyrom,

Yeah it’s absolutely true that there is nuance here and it’s not an easy question to answer. How do you both keep the integrity of sport and also allow trans women a place to compete?

Current evidence suggests that trans women have effectively no physical advantage after I think it was 6 months of HRT. But I’ve also seen some articles suggesting that there isn’t an inherent physical strength advantage between men and women to begin with. Basically men typically start with more muscle but men and women typically build muscle similarly.

And honestly if there actually are small advantages to be had for one gender vs another, imagine how cool it would be to have a team span between big burly people doing big burly things and small nimble people darting around between them, and the tactics one could do by changing up where they place which strength and how many of a given strength to have on the team

Trainguyrom,

I used to play the bajeezus out of that game and forgot about that quest.

On an related note, did you know about the 2009scape project? It’s a surprisingly complete open source server and single player implementation of RuneScape circa early 2009. The server is super friendly and free to play on

Trainguyrom,

My dad switched for vista, I switched for 10 for a while. Who knows, maybe I’ll switch for 11 too
