Based on the reviews of
Humane pin Rabbit R1, and how far telekenetic input is, it is likely future products will try for a gesture based input system in and around our palms.

This is for the simple reason that voice based input system is not suitable everywhere and a visual input system will just make everyone compare it to the smartphone

Designing a logo for my group and one of the members submitted an AI generated image which had "only" one minor mistake- a spelling error of the group name

So that, and just THAT, is now being fixed by a human editor

Forget Cryptocurrency, Web3 or VR. I get the hype behind AI

In the absence of mainstream OEMs not picking up Linux, and Linux not having the app support it needs, smaller OEMs should target specific niches in order to grow.

Just like how SteamOS helped with adoption, more creator specific or gamer specific offerings are the way to go

Has anyone's Spotify just been borderline unuseable in the last few months? Half the time pages just refuse to load regardless of network. Even the UI doesn't load so I can't even access already downloaded content. Also, note that in the screenshot music is streaming fine, but content doesn't load. Just infuriating

abcxyz,
@abcxyz@mastodon.social avatar

@black_flag @Techaltar why what do you use for streaming? I hope it is not pirating

Turning an actually healthy option by default and giving users the choice to turn it off? Now that's a good move

@skiff is officially shutting down. After a period of 6 months, products like Mail, Pages, Calendar and Drive will no longer be available.

Truly sad to see a strong competitor leave the space. Hopefully another more resilient player emerges.

AI may or not be as influential by itself but it is certainly a trend for the next few years. The big thing that's actually switching people to alternatives as companies that dont have it clearly stand out. Smaller companies have a good chance to take share from bigger ones

I was very bullish about the Vision Pro originally, but I now think I was wrong. I thought Apple with its insane R&D budgets, existing iPad & Mac app platforms, M series chips, iPhone tie-ins & the ability to sell a $3500 device was the only company that could make the "perfect" headset, with no concerns for money. But after seeing all the reviews, like this fantastic one from The Verge, I now think that even this wasn't enough.

If you're a Windows user, drop what you are doing and install QuickLook right now. It lets you preview files by just pressing the space bar, just like a Mac. Works great, is free & open source. How did I not know about this?

(yes, PowerToys can also do this)

abcxyz,
@abcxyz@mastodon.social avatar

@Techaltar Problem is, it can't do so in connected external drives

@kwasow This comes pre-installed with newer gnome installs I think

If you could ask anything about the fediverse, ActivityPub, Mastodon, Threads, etc., what would it be? Let me know and I will try to include some in the video 👇

abcxyz,
@abcxyz@mastodon.social avatar

@zlendy @Techaltar Because Mastodon was the more popular one before Twitter imploded simply because it was one of the first and the most polished ones out of all alternatives

abcxyz,
@abcxyz@mastodon.social avatar

@aronkvh @Techaltar the point of decentralisation is unlike centralised platforms, you cannot really silence anyone.

So there really isn't much fediverse can do with extremist instances.

Illegal instances tho, can be blocked by the host countries or region blocked.

abcxyz,
@abcxyz@mastodon.social avatar

@aronkvh @Techaltar hateful instances are indeed harmful but for me there are other better things to deal with to combat hate culture and its subparts including racism, cancellation, etc.

Just silencing instances won't silence the people or actually explain to them what they are doing.

Hate is a strong emotion. And people will always find a way to express it.

I switched to Firefox a few weeks ago and it was remarkably painless for something so absolutely critical and that I need to work reliably, with zero additional friction, every single day.
I cannot stress enough how low-hassle it is to switch from Chrome to a browser with a business model that doesn't rely on tracking you.
Do it.

abcxyz,
@abcxyz@mastodon.social avatar

@secretsquirrel Problem with firefox is lack of innovation.

So many features straight up missing from both its desktop and mobile client.

Take Firefox Translations and Mozilla VPN and compare them to something like Brave Translations and Brave VPN.

In terms of availability, it is clear which of the two do a better job.

If Mozilla innovates, it will gain a lot of users

Telegram has had channels for years but no mainsteam adoption yet when Whatsapp decides to copy them, they get much wider adoption.

Reason? Same one Instagram won over other social media apps- Reachability.

Your channel gets a reach and can go to a featured page on whatsapp, incentivising people to actually put effort in their content.

Its hard to even find channels on telegram as only recently getting a "similar channels" feature that too limited to only when you actually join a channel.

@Techaltar@mas.to avatar

I think one of the reasons why Mastodon feels like a nicer place than other social media apps is that the technical complexity & federated nature only really attracts idealistic nerds who genuinely want a better internet. I almost never see assholes here, no engagement baiting, nothing. Ironically, this means that IMO any simplification and move towards mainstream appeal will almost automatically jeopardize this. Tough dilemma!

abcxyz,
@abcxyz@mastodon.social avatar

@Techaltar A suggestion for you. Just like @thelinuxexperiment and @thelinuxEXP, @techlore and @techlore, etc. you can divide your mastodon posts between new video uploads and actual posts by you about your opinions, hot takes, shares, etc.

I know can be a bit risky reach wise but also can be the opposite! Think about it

Honestly seems like fake news as Its hard to believe a global big tech company is exiting such a huge economy

This once again shows the importance of competition as afreeca & YouTube are still options for streamers and viewers alike https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/12/twitch-exit-from-s-korea-is-latest-fallout-from-sending-party-pays-model/

Simple Mobile Tools, popular suite of essential mobile apps, sold to an Israeli publisher ZipoApps

This alienates its main userbase who needed an independent, ad free, FOSS collection of mobile apps for use in custom ROMs such as LineageOS

My position has always been the same- Never depend on one entity this much. Diversify

Those using the suite for all their essential apps will now have to find alternatives which hampers productivity

I have the next 3 hours to tinker, going to try something new. I'm going to try to code up something we failed to do with Pebble, an AI post / tweet writer that matches your style. You can watch me do this live on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51DWARJckL4

abcxyz,
@abcxyz@mastodon.social avatar

@gabor Mastodon and Gab/Truth were seen as politically biased, with more focused communities

Twitter and BlueSky had its issues with direction

So Pebble would have been a great platform to start afresh and with clever marketing, it would have been a great success just like Mastodon

A shame it was shut down so early without realising its full potential
