The casting choices are just so weird. Across the board.

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

That one, I’ll grant you.

Very intriguing. Is there a wiki or support forum in the works, too?

aleph,

Cool. Will definitely be giving blendOS a spin in a VM.

Follow-up question: I’m in the US and the initial installation is taking forever. Pacman seems to be running at just 60-80 KiB/s when I normally get 5MiB/s. IS there a way to have the installer choose a local mirror before downloading all the packages?

@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

Ok, thanks for the heads-up. I’m running it in a local VM and for some reason my host Arch system is significantly faster at downloading and installing packages than the blendOS guest. Not sure why, but just thought I’d mention it.

Edit: never mind, I messed up the first installation so had to do-over, and the slow download speed seems to have recovered this time.

The party that revolutionized political lawfare and has gone after their political rivals via the criminal justice system on several occasions is now clutching their pearls and heralding the end of American democracy?

The audacity.

Because they are traditional gentlesirs who think that feminism has ruined western women and therefore yearn for a cute, child-like, and submissive female partner who does not threaten their fragile sense of masculinity?

I dunno, just guessing.

Hybrid engines have been around for quite some time, though, and they can be just as reliable as ICEs.

On the other hand, the weakness of EVs right now isn’t just the charging infrastructure - it’s the batteries. They’re big, heavy, and very expensive to replace. This is especially true given all the new electric pickups/SUVs coming onto the market in the US. Battery tech needs to mature a while longer, IMO.

On top of that, there’s the fact that Toyota have been investing heavily in hydrogen fuel cell technology for years, instead of BEVs. They put their bets on the wrong horse, and have been slow to adapt as a result.

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

That certainly is news to me. After all these years and the almost total lack of hydrogen infrastructure in the US, I had assumed that it was considered a dead end.

That said, it does makes sense; I hadn’t considered that hydrogen tech was more in competition with ICEs than with EVs.

Yup.

It’s not so much of a problem for brand new modela but there are still many older ones that suffer from battery failure and degradation outside of warranty.

aleph,

Nope, same incident.

Yet more evidence that the average Republican’s adherence to the teachings of Christianity is purely performative.

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

Meh, who cares about performance benchmarks for phones?

I’m much more interested to see how power efficient Tensor 4 is, and whether or not they’ve fixed the connectivity issues.

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

I though G4 was supposed to bring a big improvement to the modem, or is that going to be G5?

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

Right, but these new benchmarks don’t speak to that, do they?

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

Possibly, lol. Although going from Samsung’s to their own completely custom silicon will be the best chance of seeing some actual improvements.

Great article. That’s the thing that people who dismiss Trump supporters as simply idiots or racists are missing - Trump took all those feelings of disenfranchisement and isolation and channeled them into a movement.

If only Washington spent more time, energy, and money on the real issues affecting quality of life in the US instead of funding military wars aboard and culture wars at home.

Distro suggestions for grandparents?

Hello there. Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a Linux distro for grandparents? They are over 70 years old, with an old HP desktop and laptop running Windows 10. All they need is a Web browser, so no need for special software or wine to run Windows programs. Would preferably like something that is low maintenance...

Aurora/Bluefin or Silverblue/Kinoite.

They have a GUI package manager? That’s news to me. When I tried it out last year, package management was handled by nix-env or configuration.nix.

Anyway, I found it much harder than Arch because it requires learning a completely new paradigm of system management. There is a very high upfront investment in learning multiple new concepts in order to change even the most basic aspects of your system - What are flakes? What are channels? What is home-manager?

Also, the documentation and online support is far more sparse. If you encounter an issue, it’s much more likely that you can find the solution for Arch through the wiki or a forum than it is with NixOS. There also tends to be no single way to resolve a problem, and so a lot of the information you find online may appear contradictory and confusing.

And I never said installing packages is harder than Arch. I said setting up, configuring, and troubleshooting the system is harder than Arch.

In any case, the original point was that NixOS is a weird choice for an atomic/immutable system for grandparents when compared to something like Silverblue.

I’d be interested in buying a Nothing phone if they weren’t all so huge.
