candybrie,

Does 80 technical papers in 2.5 years seem kind of off to anyone else? That’s more than a paper every 2 weeks. Is there really time for meaningful research if you’re publishing that often? Is he advising a lot of students? If that’s the case, is he providing the attention generally needed for each one? Is his field just super different than mine?

candybrie,

But if you truly believe in the religion, what does that change?

Like I can absolutely abhor some of the things people have done in the name of medicine and often are still doing, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop going to doctors when I’m sick. Because I fundamentally believe in medical science and that I’m more likely to die without them. If you are raised catholic, there’s a good chance you fundamentally believe your eternal life is better if you continue to follow the religion. Sure, I probably have more proof, but their belief is just as strong.

candybrie,

That’s very different than automatically assuming you aren’t a citizen of the UK and asking if you have permanent residence.

candybrie,

No, that leaves open the possibility that you are a UK citizen. “Do you have green card?” skips over asking if you are a citizen and goes straight to “Are you at least a permanent resident?”

Put another way, if the candidate answers “No.” to “Do you have a green card?” That doesn’t tell the recruiter if they need a visa or if they have the right to work in the US without a presumption that they aren’t a citizen.

candybrie,

That’s kind of a weird question, too. Like, what does it mean if you say no? That you are a citizen or that you don’t intend to become a permanent resident?

“Do you need a visa?” Or “Are you legally allowed to work in the United States?” would be the way it would generally be asked and isn’t a problem. See all the comments that replied to the person saying it wasn’t a big deal.

candybrie,

Primary to tertiary? Does that mean it includes what college students through grad school spend themselves? Because that would shift perception of this a lot.

Edit: The original data does include public funding and private funding:

Every year, governments, private companies, students and their families make decisions about the financial resources invested in education.

They do break it out, but I can’t tell if the graphic is using the total or just the public funding.

So this graphic might just be: Americans spend a stupid amount on college.

Pronouns and tribal affiliations are now forbidden in South Dakota public university employee emails (apnews.com)

A new South Dakota policy to stop the use of gender pronouns by public university faculty and staff in official correspondence is also keeping Native American employees from listing their tribal affiliations in a state with a long and violent history of conflict with tribes....

candybrie,

Are you mad about people putting pronouns and tribal affiliations in their email signatures? Because, yeah, that’s fucking awful.

candybrie,

Periods going away or getting lighter is a side affect of hormonal IUDs. Copper IUDs have no mechanism to make them go away, and seem to pretty commonly make cramps and bleeding worse. .

candybrie,

The difference between you and many of the people you’re arguing with is your confidence that there will be another election after Trump wins.

Trump floats idea of three-term presidency at NRA convention (www.theguardian.com)

Donald Trump flirted with the idea of being president for three terms – a clear violation of the US constitution – during a bombastic speech for the National Rifle Association in which he vowed to reverse gun safety measures green-lighted during the Biden administration....

candybrie,

And Trump is even more unlikable than Romney. No one has really been running terribly likeable candidates lately.

candybrie,

It cuts both ways, though. Sure, it gets his fans out in record numbers, but it also gets people who hate him voting in record numbers, too. I don’t think we’d have had that 2020 turnout for Joe Biden without Trump.

candybrie,

Yeah, he barely lost to Joe Biden. Biden vs Obama popularity isn’t even a contest.

candybrie,

Fractional reserve is a reference to banks needing to keep a fraction of their customers’ deposits but are allowed to invest/lend out the rest. Some people think this means keep a fraction of customers cash on hand because liquid assets are often referred to as cash in accounting even if it isn’t actually paper money.

candybrie,

I think it’s an egg laid by a chicken. Unfertilized eggs laid by chickens that will never become chickens are still chicken eggs.

candybrie, (edited )

The question posed is what is a chicken egg? Is it an egg from which a chicken hatches or an egg which a chicken lays? I’d argue it’s the latter. Because we already consider eggs from which no chicken could hatch but that a chicken laid, chicken eggs.

candybrie,

And this is just the legal status, as in, is it criminal to be in a homosexual relationship. Not do LGBT+ have rights, are there anti discrimination laws, are advocacy groups allowed. And certainly not how LGBT+ folks are treated in society.

candybrie,

No. I’m pointing out that all the green countries aren’t equal. Like some allow gay marriage and some do not. Some allow legal discrimination against LGBT+ folks and some do not.

Mostly I was surprised to see Russia as green and had to look up why.

candybrie,

Sounds plausible. The main thing peds worry about for toddlers primarily subsisting off milk is iron deficiency. Potatoes have iron and vitamin c.

candybrie,

Also chicken pox sucks. If they made a vaccine for hand, foot, and mouth, I’d get my kids vaccinated and that’s mild compared to chicken pox.

candybrie,

The one on the right is what my grandma’s dining room still looks like. Exact chairs and all.

candybrie,

It legalizes medical and research use of weed, which are currently federally illegal. Doesn’t do much for recreational use though.

candybrie,

Just walking away from someone who you’re talking to is generally seen as very rude, hence us developing social cues to demonstrate that you’re done with the topic/conversation.

candybrie,

I think it went over a lot of people’s heads.

candybrie, (edited )

Maryland is blue and doesn’t matter. Similarly, Nebraska went for the republican candidate by more than a 20 point margin in 2020.

If you want to use that argument, how many people voted for “noncommitted” in the Michigan democratic primary? People don’t even have another option but are going out to vote “not Biden” in an actual swing state.

candybrie,

MI went for Trump in 2016 and broke for Biden by less than 3% in 2020. If those “noncommitted” voters didn’t show up, it would be a problem for Biden. Whereas if the Haley voters didn’t show up in Nebraska and Maryland, it would not be a problem for Trump.
