I wonder if reporters know that Wikipedia hallucinates too?? And since they so often consider Wikipedia authoritative, that means reporters and their publications hallucinate as well.

davew,
@davew@mastodon.social avatar

@timbray

Wikipedia is notoriously difficult to correct, people camp out on topics and revert any attempt to correct the story, works a lot like mail lists. But let’s not argue about this, you can believe what you like.

An internet for writers

The next step in online social media will be group blogs that support the APIs needed to integrate with not only the Fediverse, but other non-AP services that have their own APIs.

Each one will have a theme, a voice, not all writers in agreement of course, but sharing a similar perspective, context, point of view.

@davew@mastodon.social avatar

@ben --

i wasn't paying much attention when Ghost was launched but it feels like a trap to me now that I have looked closer, more of a business model than a vision for a better social web.

I think we've all lost our way here, and forgotten the writers. Yet that's all we're doing all day every day -- writing. ;-)

I'm glad we're on the same page. I get that impression from reading your blog.

Let's find ways to work together on this. ;-)

@davew@mastodon.social avatar

@ben

i hope at some point you'll be enthusiastic about the stuff i've been developing for the last few years. ;-)

and i have a new product coming that's aimed right at this "internet for writers".

what do you use to edit your blog?

@ben

btw in my next product i'm aiming for a writing tool that could be used to write short tweets, or a medium size post, a set of docs, but not likely the best way to write a novel.

i've used the little text boxes in masto, twitter, threads, facebook as the starting point.

it publishes through wordpress. doesn't have its own cms.

i like that you're using markdown.

i think markdown and feeds go together, i would have certainly put it in RSS 2.0 if it existed at the time.

@ben

i can't read wired unfortunately, not a subscriber.

davew,
@davew@mastodon.social avatar

@ben

a screen shot might be enough. i'm pretty good at "reading" them. ;-)

Mastodon feels more international than the other Twitter-alikes.

Gargron, to fediverse
@Gargron@mastodon.social avatar

I should be able to follow #Cara users from my Mastodon account. You can't convince me to make yet another account in a yet another silo, but I'd love to see and share more art in my home feed. Anyone have a connection to their team? Would love to chat about the #fediverse.

davew,
@davew@mastodon.social avatar

@Gargron

you sound like me -- wrt RSS. 😀

they do have a feed btw, so you could meet them half-way by supporting RSS as an equal with ActivityPub.

there's lots of good stuff out there that's available in feeds that hasn't made it to AP yet.

btw, i am able to follow you in my feed reader, bc as you know Masto supports outbound RSS.

maybe you and i should work together to bring the two worlds together?

davew,
@davew@mastodon.social avatar

@Gargron -- makes sense.

but -- if you can have some of what you want now to get started, why not.

that's always how i approach these things. that's why i was so happy to see that you all supported outbound RSS.

but i want more connections between the two world. we're not done building.

and thanks for taking the time to respond.

davew,
@davew@mastodon.social avatar

@evan @Gargron

well that's an interesting statement! 😀

i'd love to see that realized, a simple namespace for RSS that gives it more compatibility with Mastodon.

davew,
@davew@mastodon.social avatar

@evan @Gargron

yet here we are in 2024 and the problem is connecting the first to the last.

there's always a price to pay for not interop-ing. 🙂

ChatGPT is a vast library that comes with its own librarian.

davew,
@davew@mastodon.social avatar

When you write about ChatGPT you get the same old bullshit. I am just blocked 10 out of 11 replies here. The whole idea that this social web has any value at all. I don’t know if I see that. Mostly bullshit.

davew, to random
@davew@mastodon.social avatar

To people who say you get wrong answers from ChatGPT, if I wanted my car to kill me I could drive into oncoming traffic. If I wanted my calculator to give me incorrect results I could press the wrong keys.

In other words, ChatGPT is a very new tool. it can be hard to control, you have to check what it says, and try different questions.

But the result, if you pay attention and don't drive it under the wheels of a bus, is that you can do things you never could do before.

davew, to random
@davew@mastodon.social avatar

I'm looking for stories about how people are using ChatGPT et al.

I will share the good stuff on my linkblog.

PS: Not interested in what they're saying about it in journalistm, unless it's about how people are using it.

@brianstorms @dave

yes. we did it in software too when i was running a small silicon valley company, we made it impossible for people to copy our software to their hard drives. and our copy protection didn't work. i knew we had to stop when i received our disks from users cut into pieces. they said they loved our software but didn't like being treated like criminals.

the point is if you're at war with your users you haven't got much of a business.
