@ai6yr @exador23 or it could be a medical condition that the police ignored and she could be literally dying in jail. That happens occasionally, too.

I attempted to help my brother with a confounding problem with his car this afternoon, and after a few hours of work, we were no closer to an answer than when we started.

Recently, his battery has been draining down overnight. He thought maybe he had a bad battery, so he got a new one. Same problem.

I went over there today and found that the car is drawing 1.6 amps from the battery even when turned off.

We started troubleshooting by pulling fuses. The car kept drawing 1.6 amps through all of them.

I pulled the main fuse, and the car still drew 1.6 amps.

For a while, we thought it was maybe the alternator rectifier, but that wasn't it.

We unwrapped the sheath from the main bundle of wires coming off the battery and found no shorts.

We disconnected the wiring to the starter and that wasn't it.

The car still draws 1.6 amps! We can't figure out what's doing it!

@MLE_online does the car have an aftermarket alarm/immobilizer or any other aftermarket stuff (stereo, aux driving lights, etc)?

@MLE_online 😬😬😬 then my guess would be a failing wiring harness which will be a nightmare to troubleshoot.

It's possible there is a hidden lo-jack style system a dealer installed at some point where they cut it directly into the harness before the factory fuses. Usually they don't work too hard to hide them but sometimes they do.

I've seen them in the engine bay and under the dash.

@MLE_online it could be a factory installed splice going bad. I've had that happen on an old Toyota before.

It could also be a rodent chewing on something. Do you see any evidence of rodent activity?

Shared governance is important. Be engaged with it if you have the opportunity. 900 (!) faculty attended this meeting.

@bud_t @academicchatter it must be cool to work somewhere with shared governance. We are actively losing what little we had.

@bud_t @academicchatter because of who we work for, shared governance only exists if the president of the institution wants it to exist. It would take Congress to change that which isn't going to happen.

Another significant struggle is that a sizeable portion of our faculty got their degrees with us and have never really known a different academic system. We're significantly inbred and it's going to get worse because almost no one from the outside is accepting our job offers.

Currently at MRY listening to the flight crew complain that the gate agent isn't at the gate yet.

Now the pilot is trying to operate the gate computer.

Now he's trying to get the gate desk phone to work to call the check in desk to get the gate agent (who is also the check in agent) to come so she can let the flight crew out to the plane.

Now in the Rome airport for a while waiting for my flight to Catania. I really dislike the focus of many European airports being on duty free stores. It's a hot mess of a maze to get through them and then you've got to wait for quite some time to figure out what gate exactly the flight will depart from.
