People ask ask me, “Where’s the innovation in video games nowadays?”

Certainly, it’s not with AAA titles. It’s with indie games. And more likely indie games on PC.

Take, for example, Bots Are Stupid. This is as innovative as it gets. And it doesn’t come by its innovation through fancy graphics or sound.

Instead, its innovation comes through code.

This is a precision platformer starring robots. Rather than moving your robot directly through any keys, you must code your robot’s movement. That is, you must precisely type out the actions your robot must make in order to beat each level.

Putting an emphasis on code makes this a deep and rewarding experience. Half the fun is typing in variables and values and seeing what happens to your robot. Believe me, when you beat a level, you feel a huge sense of accomplishment because you wrote all the code to make it happen.

Bots Are Stupid isn’t only fun, it’s educational too. While it doesn’t teach you any specific coding languages, it nevertheless teaches you a pseudo-code that familiarizes you with the basics of programming. And the code is quite approachable too!

If you want to teach your kids how to code, getting them to play this game is a good entryway into the world of programming. Or if you want to learn how to code but do so in a fun and interactive way, you might very well love Bots Are Stupid.

What makes this especially engaging are the tutorials that familiarize you with the code. They teach you how to code step-by-step, and then show you demos for how your robots move.

The graphics are simple and adorable. The music is whimsical. And I found the interface to be incredibly friendly.

When I think of games that are only possible on PC – and when I say PC, I mean PC platforms in general – Bots Are Stupid comes top to mind. Because you need to code, a keyboard is essential. I don’t think this can be adapted well to mobile or console platforms.

This entire game was developed by Leander Edler-Golla, who programmed it by himself. To date, this is the only game he’s made. I hope he makes more because I love the idea of coding to play a game. Frankly, it’s an ingenious idea.

What’s even more awesome is that Bots Are Stupid comes with a level editor. Yeah, I’ve seen level editors in many games before. But it’s even more awesome when the game is controlled through coding. Giving me a level editor makes me feel that I have true ultimate power!

So where is the innovation in video games nowadays? It very much exists. If you want it, you got to explore indie gaming.

Indie gaming is where the innovation happens.

Until now, I didn't particularly like the band Wheel from Germany (not the Finnish band with the same name).

Some time ago, I accidentally bought the album "Preserved in Time" [1] on Bandcamp when I actually wanted to buy something from the Finnish band Wheel.

Now Plex just played it for me in the mix and I'm quite happy with it right now! 🤘

Mein Jellyfin Server auf einem Rock64 hat jetzt tatsächlich fast 10 Minuten gebraucht, bis er nach einem Kaltstart wieder verfügbar war. Das ist mir zu lang.

Auf der anderen Seite - wenn er mal läuft, dann reicht der Rock64 für Musikstreaming leistungsmäßig völlig aus.

Will aber eigentlich gerade kein Geld für neues Spielzeug ausgeben :S

Also bleibt's wohl erst mal dabei ;-)
