Do jigsaw puzzle pieces want to be back connected to their original nearby pieces, or do they prefer to be free?

Feels like I should get an answer to this before I do any more jigsaw puzzles.

Just noticed that both WhatsApp and Signal signify who wrote a message just by aligning left for the other person and right for you, and different colours. In groups they also add names but not in 1:1s. Does everyone find that easy to understand?

@joelanman I never remember which is which so reading old conversation archives is often confusing for me.

Over the course of at most ten minutes while I was watching some idiot on YouTube my body temperature has dropped so much that I have goosebumps and near uncontrollable shivers. Even a blanket didn’t help much and I’m struggling to type this. So that’s fantastic.

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@semanticist it'd be nice to know which specific video you were watching so we can all avoid such an experience too, thanks.

Also, another neighbour leant us this comedy cartoon-size hammer so I got to play with that.

@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

The neighbouring farmer's sheep got into our newly planted out veg patch and ate most of it and damaged the strawberry plants too. A bit upsetting, but we hastily erected some stock fencing around it and have a promise from the farmer to fix his fence (and he's moved the sheep elsewhere).

Dear past me: in bash "&2>1" is not the same as "2>&1". It looks similar and is technically valid and your script might run for months without obvious problems but it is not the same and frankly, I don't understand how this was working at all or if it's even why you're currently experiencing problems. Also, this was a waste of a time travelling letter.

Me and Rob (as the band Robber John) did some recording at the weekend. Here's our cover of the Decemberists song "Down by the Water".

Another ex-grow-op providing some free compost. This one dumped within wheel-barrowing distance of home - very convenient (except for our drive being very steep).

The compost does have some unidentifiable water retaining granules and came in individual fabric root bags, which while quite cute are made of recycled plastic so overall, a bit wary of the microplastics here. Will use for non food growing. The last grow op we recovered, we got loads of large high quality pots!

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@semanticist ha that is exactly where these came from! It's a seemingly rampant problem at the moment where cannabis growers (or perhaps landlords finding their property having been used by them) fly-tipping the old plants and equipment, often out on a quiet country road. They have big budgets so usually good quality stuff!

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@johnmclear ta thanks! One of my neighbours actually proactively offered to bring it all down in his bobcat mini bulldozer thing but frankly, there is way more than we want - especially given we don't want to use it for growing veg, which is mostly what we grow (I was 3 wheelbarrows in before I realised that, so glad I didn't just get it all brought down!).

And yeah, weather was nice and I need the exercise!

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@semanticist the last one we got was found in a friend's building that he used to rent out to a restaurant. The restaurant folded during covid but didn't tell him and, well, pivoted into growing cannabis. First he heard of it was reading about it in the newspaper. The police destroyed the plants but left everything else (including the lamps and huge filters) so we did our bit with the cleanup operation.

They absolutely ruined his building though :/

They've made it incredibly ugly, but is there anyone who doesn't secretly want to own a double-decker bus? Current bid (as of writing) is only £170! https://www.johnpyeauctions.co.uk/Event/LotDetails/236581658/2002-VOLVO-B7TL-DOUBLE-DECKER-EVENTS-BUS-REGN-VM02-BUS-APPROX-MILEAGE-780000-CLASSIFIED-MOT-EXEMPT-COMES-WITH-V5-NO-KEYS

@semanticist mot exempt! basically pays for itself! also, it comes with no keys so it's impossible to lose the keys! all keys fully pre-lost, such convenience. and no charge for collection!

we can't afford NOT to buy it!

I made Bumbi's Kashmiri Chicken Masala and it turned out excellent. I used vegan coconut-based yoghurt to avoid the lactose and was fine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1cX7qnE-JM

Learned/remembered a few things:

Spices going in at the end are almost certainly worth being freshly dry fried whole and ground.

Don't use too much tomato. This was one small tomato for 1.5kg chicken!

Don't cook entirely by time. Learn to recognise when things are ready. Bumbi explains how to do that.

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

I also made her Broccoli Pepper Fry side dish (I left out the cauliflower). The gram flour adds a lovely subtle flavour - good tip.

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@gnufied I somehow make every curry recipe take ages! Though I usually batch cook a lot and freeze separate portions.

I have made recipes with a garam masala at the end, and some that suggested fresh grinding, but this was the first time I noticed someone making the effort specifically for the garam masala and not worrying about the others. But then again, it might just be that I like her particular mix.

Looking forward to any advice, thanks!

johnl, to sourdough
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

I've not made any sourdough bread for a while now and I let my starter die. I usually just scrounge some off my mate and get it going again but this time I thought I'd ask the local "artisan" bakery, and they were very happy to give me some starter! So I'll be trying a loaf soon to compare.

I've really been enjoying restic for backups lately - I've defaulted to Backblaze as the backend, but one of the big benefits is that you're not locked into any given provider, so moving is easy.

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@semanticist restic is so good isn't it! For my personal data I backup to a local NAS using sftp so it completes quickly but then rclone that offsite. rclone is also excellent.

We have a terrible old fashioned java-based billing system at work. It works fine but extending it in any way is very tricky. It is at least open source so debugging or extending it is easier than it might otherwise be, but still very painful.

But, I weirdly quite enjoy working on it. It's a real challenge and frustrating but that means it's very satisfying when I figure it out. But boy, am I glad the rest of our stack is modern, well written and in nicer languages :)

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@caius yeah. I think it might be the worst technical decision I've ever made, but it's easy to forget what the alternatives were at the time. At least I ensured it was under a free software license so we've been able to keep it running ourselves. As shit as it is, it just keeps on going pretty much flawlessly.

@PerformantData yes, we replaced in-cluster ceph with in-cluster NFS to simplify things and it's been great. The project lead on it is away this week but I'll ask him to write up a blog post when he's back.
